Why did you move away from this design? It looks minimalistic, and could be further improved upon.

That's what makes the robot move, it is called a linear motor
powerful but slow
It is not slow when you fix it near the pivot point of an ankle/knee/etc you can calculate the angular velocity with the proper articulation's metrics
