i was a wizzkid in school regarding computer science. i cant recall HOW MANY times we argued that technology saves us time. that is complete bullshit... progress and that includes it just helped us to run away faster and further from who we are. were ashamed of our humanity, or weaknesses that MAKE us human in the first place and enable connection to other people. were afraid to become ourselves and face true freedom - including some bitter apples that life has for us. we lay our future in the hands of guy who basically understand NOTHING about what i was talking about. i.e. well be hitting a wall fast.

@@lindalucas7553 government will step in at that point with UBI. the safety of the families in question hinges on how government will respond to our new capabilities really, so your concern is totally legitimate. if government does not respond with UBI the people affected will be picketing until they do respond. as far as robots needing humans to function, i feel like this is becoming less and less true over time
This would be great if people don’t need to work as much but also people still need to eat. A UBI would need to be implemented as AI robots can replace most labor eventually.
The fear is that the money saved will simply go up hill as it always has, and regular people will still be pressured to get out there and work. Then they'll die in their room cuz nobody actually helped them. The way further off, but worse fear is that corporations will get so deluded that eventually they'll just be using robots to sell to robots who can watch 1,000 streaming services all at once and pay for them. And that money will become so insanely inflated that it will just be robots vs robots playing with hundreds of millions of zeros. And we're all dead. Despite me being someone who genuinely loves to see these people have passion for the science they do, I also understand the implications and why people are afraid. They are so clever but can't see what this looks like across a long span of time.

If you have a business that needs 10 people to operate and 1 person leaves every month and you hire someone new every month then your business would have “lost” 12 employees in a year and your turnover would be 120% since 12 people left but you need 10.
Figure is a frightening company. I think the message of building robotics for commercial, manual jobs got through to OpenAI. Very important and an impressive work ethic.
honestly in my work environment, I sit in one place and do a lot of repetitive movements. just basically open bags and take some things out of it, apply my tool to the things, then put them back in the bag i think it would be great if I could train something that's like BD's Stretch, like something that sits in one place but moves its hands around on a swiveling arm thing the hands would also need to be gentle, as I handle things that shouldn't be scratched
The 2 areas that robots are being developed are the humanoids that can do what human can do which is really hard. The other is to reengineer the surrounding world so robots are not that complex and can perform the tasks efficiently. Think of robots in factory that will automate many tasks with all the products components are designed to function and can be automated. Besides in the factory, it may require a change and adaptation in consumers as future products may not look and architected the same way as we have now.
just like other industrial automations, the profits will NOT "free up time to do the things you like". It will make more money for the profiteers. Buy the stocks. History proves this as in the 1960's it took one income to afford a home (one "bread winner"). Now its 2,5 incomes needed per house (more than two adults working) and LONGER work hours per week are expected too
It is very simple to understand. For years it has been discussed at the level of the rich that humanity must be reduced, resources are running out. Along with the development of technologies worldwide, solutions to eliminate people also appeared. Why do they want total automation? Because at a production line where 100 people were working, now 10 technicians are used for maintenance. The cost of the 90 fired people covers a large part of the initial investment cost and very soon the investment will be returned and the profit will be entered directly with minimal maintenance costs. The ideal situation for any investor. What happens to the fired people? they are absorbed in the economy as much as possible until this solution no longer exists. Until then, many will die from less known medical causes but treated with all kinds of medical innovations
Quick tip, idk if you have these already but the reason why robots aren't as fluid in movement as us is because like us we both control muscles/actuators but robot's don't have sensory input in their legs like us, we feel through our nerves therefore we correct ourselves if we lose balance or climbing terrain, what if you were to put distance sensors in the bottom of the feet of the robot as well as gyro sensors in the legs?

Humanoid Robots will definitely cost a lot of jobs and if the government does not take precautions this will hit many people hard. A robot like Figure is probably the first one to be capable to replace simple factory workers jobs. Even if they initally cost a lot a robot is working 23/7 seven and does not require anything a human otherwise would. They should definitely know this at figure and point at the problem rather than ignoring it.
Open a simple restaurant or dinner in any location, there must be many affordable places available to buy. Let's put these robots to the test and see if they can handle all the positions such as a waiter, cook, dishwasher, and more. You could create a fully automated chain of restaurants run entirely by robots if it works. The potential for amazing RUclips videos is also a plus.Who wouldn't want to eat there? This could be your edge.

I love robots, but I can't believe how youtube videos portray them as "a solution to a lack of workers" when in reality they are 100% being bought because they can do the same labor cheaper. The first wave of the industrial revolution had huge effects on many industries and caused mass unemployment, it also shifted the power balance from the worker to the owners of industry, until unionisation and regulation intervened. I'll be WOWed when a robot can butter a piece of toast. That means following the instruction "make me some toast", it'll fetch the bread, the butter, the knife, stick the bread in the toaster, retrieve the toast, unwrap the butter, apply the butter in an EVEN spread and hand it to me on a plate. Then clean up. Clean the knife, rewrap the butter, and place everything back from whence it came. And be able to do this in any home in which it finds itself tasked with being a home help. The very simplest of tasks for the average human being. For a humanoid robot? One word: Nope.

I don't know what kind of future humanoid robots are going to build for humans. Is it for the better or worse ? I have my concerns but always great to see new innovations.
From what I see, the version that they have right now, would be not able to do any meaningful job, other than just walk, since the type of knee and hip motors, most likely would not be able to provide enough torque to be able to lift any more than the body weight alone. I am not saying this with confidence, but this is what my gut feeling tells me. But, if the goal to develop a generic humanoid robot software platform, then that construction should be well enough. Also approach with using depth cameras might not be the best in a long run (that is, IF they actually use depth camera functionality and not just use those depth cameras as a simple stereo cameras). It's nice to see companies, other than Tesla, who work on these problems!
Very very impressive for such prototype! They will face the same problems with sourcing components for humanoid robots, that don't exist in the market, as did Tesla in near future. It's like the Self-Driving car. DARPA / Google initiated that race where ppl with lots of money will fund "commercial research labs" to experiment in hopes that they are eventually a winner. DARPA / Boston Dynamics initiated this current race. There are gears inside the motors that multiply torque. There could also be a dual system with two motors per joint. One weak and fast another strong (geared) and slow.

However, I don't think intelligence is the important factor, scale is. Tesla has multiple large and established factories (and everything associated with that) that can add optimus production lines. Figure is starting from scratch. Both will be successful but Optimus production numbers will exceed figure by an order of magnitude or two

Think of it like a robot Olympics for space exploration! The company that builds the most advanced robot first will dominate a massive new market. This market will completely transform jobs and how our economy works, impacting everyone from astronauts to office workers.
Id say that building a robot like this is only 10% of the challenge. Every university have similar machine. Make it learn to interact with objects, navigate the space without crushing and having reasonable power autonomy is another 90%.

Companies should rely on advanced software that acts like a virtual twin of the real design. This allows them to test and refine their ideas much quicker, saving time and money.
I love your enthusiasm but I can't help think Tesla's approach of reducing complexity for lower cost and ease of mass manufacture is going to prove the best approach to actually succeed in mass adoption. good luck though
So when companies and corporations complain about a labor shortage or lack of workers, it boils down to most people don’t want to work for unlivable wages. People need to live at the end of the day and without a stable and reliable social safety net, people just cannot afford to work in those kinds of jobs. Now you can blame the people and bootstraps this and that but functionally once wages go up this “worker shortage“ essentially evaporates. This is fascinating tech and very impressive but the mission statements of these companies are always bs. How can we replace people and how many can we replace. Simple. This doesn’t look like a bright vision this looks like the dark clouds of a nightmare that’s too late to stop.
Needs artificial muscles, tendons and ligaments instead of stiff actuators. idk, but I think this is what most robot makers fail at doing, reinventing the wheel instead of copying what already works in nature.

@@Diamoondust They'll have the same effect on society as the robot vacuum cleaner. Virtually none. In fact less so because 1) they'll be too expensive and 2) the market will be relatively small. This idea that most will have an AGI robot in their house is ludicrous beyond further contemplation.

I don't know what kind of future humanoid robots are going to build for humans. Is it for the better or worse ? I have my concerns but always great to see new innovations.
Genuine question: does anyone know why they can’t walk normally yet? Like if you forced a walk animation into them? Can’t they balance or something?
From what I see, the version that they have right now, would be not able to do any meaningful job, other than just walk, since the type of knee and hip motors, most likely would not be able to provide enough torque to be able to lift any more than the body weight alone. I am not saying this with confidence, but this is what my gut feeling tells me. But, if the goal to develop a generic humanoid robot software platform, then that construction should be well enough.
Also approach with using depth cameras might not be the best in a long run (that is, IF they actually use depth camera functionality and not just use those depth cameras as a simple stereo cameras).
It's nice to see companies, other than Tesla, who work on these problems!
Keep in mind this is a prototype they've developed in less than 12 months 😉
Very very impressive for such prototype! They will face the same problems with sourcing components for humanoid robots, that don't exist in the market, as did Tesla in near future. I hope they will get all the funding and talent they need, because we need more companies working on real-world humanoid robots! @@s3_build
It's like the Self-Driving car. DARPA / Google initiated that race where ppl with lots of money will fund "commercial research labs" to experiment in hopes that they are eventually a winner. DARPA / Boston Dynamics initiated this current race. The capitalists are more powerful than the government nowadays and research projects no longer need taxpayer funds so it happens in real world settings.
There are gears inside the motors that multiply torque. There could also be a dual system with two motors per joint. One weak and fast another strong (geared) and slow.

@@JohnNy-ni9np Teslabot is built off a foundation of FSD. Figure has been spun up in the last year (And is still insanely impressive). However, I don't think intelligence is the important factor, scale is. Tesla has multiple large and established factories (and everything associated with that) that can add optimus production lines. Figure is starting from scratch.
Both will be successful but Optimus production numbers will exceed figure by an order of magnitude or two
@@abcqer555 , Interesting. Well, that remains to be seen. However, I think humanoid robots need to be smart to be useful. Factories already employed tons of dumb robots in the form of robotics arms. They do specific task efficiency which Optimus can not match.
Tesla has nothing near chatGpt at the moment and we don't know if they are able to catch up. And we ain't seen nothing about ChatGpt-5 yet.
Manufacturing Figure shouldn't be a problem once funding starts to flow in.

Id say that building a robot like this is only 10% of the challenge. Every university have similar machine. Make it learn to interact with objects, navigate the space without crushing and having reasonable power autonomy is another 90%.

I dont see a single good use for robots other than to do ALL of our work and chores while humans have everything provided for them and spend most of their time in virtual worlds like in the god dam matrix movies.
Companies should rely on advanced software that acts like a virtual twin of the real design. This allows them to test and refine their ideas much quicker, saving time and money.

I love your enthusiasm but I can't help think Tesla's approach of reducing complexity for lower cost and ease of mass manufacture is going to prove the best approach to actually succeed in mass adoption.

I don't believe that approach vs Figure/Tesla is mutually exclusive.
So when companies and corporations complain about a labor shortage or lack of workers, it boils down to most people don’t want to work for unlivable wages. People need to live at the end of the day and without a stable and reliable social safety net, people just cannot afford to work in those kinds of jobs. Now you can blame the people and bootstraps this and that but functionally once wages go up this “worker shortage“ essentially evaporates. This is fascinating tech and very impressive but the mission statements of these companies are always bs. How can we replace people and how many can we replace. Simple. This doesn’t look like a bright vision this looks like the dark clouds of a nightmare that’s too late to stop.
Needs artificial muscles, tendons and ligaments instead of stiff actuators. idk, but I think this is what most robot makers fail at doing, reinventing the wheel instead of copying what already works in nature.
