I became a die-hard NASCAR fan in 1974 and The King has been my hero ever since. My father, two brothers and I drove from Michigan to the World/Coca-Cola 600 almost every year from 1987-2012. So many fun memories watching this video.
Damn, Detroit to Charlotte Motor Speedway is over 600 miles. Meanwhile, Watkins Glen is only 450 miles, Pocono 520, Bristol 570, Martinsville 580, Dover 600... Such a shame there were no races in Ohio.
1977 NASCAR Cup series points BEFORE this race · Cale Yarborough (2085 and 7 wins, Chevrolet) · Richard Petty (-202 with 2 wins, Dodge) · Darrell Waltrip (-248 with 2 wins, Chevrolet) · Benny Parsons (-253 with 1 win, Chevrolet) · Buddy Baker (-495, Ford) · Cecil Gordon (-617, Chevrolet) · Dave Marcis (-625, Chevrolet) · Dick Brooks (-646, Ford) · Bobby Allison 11th with the AMC, David Pearson 15th despite only doing 8 of 12 races so far
They were right about it being hot. With Petty dominating at halfway, my wife and I headed out. I had seen enough Petty wins to know when the party was over.
Before loading up to go to the track Maurice summoned Richard to show him the race engine and qualifying engine, and they were within just one horsepower of each other. Richard was this licking his chops for Charlotte’s lap leader bonuses
Another "Clash of the Titans!" Petty and Pearson finished 1-2 a total of 64 times in their glorious & unmatched careers, man oh man, what a rivalry! Pearson - 33 Petty - 31. The King bested The Silver Fox in this one 💪🤠👍
@@kg0173 Oh yeah sure, whatever you need to tell yourself you go right ahead Hoss, but all I've got to say is King Richard="200-W's, 7 Cup's & 7 Daytona 500's".....105-W's-3 Cup's & 10 Cup W's at Darlington! I think that's nuff said bout these two "Titans of Major League American Stock Car Racing" 🤷🏻♂️
@@Slinger43 Agree, but just watch those races. If the cars held together, they were most likely both up front by a lap, laps. They both stood out on regular basis, but it had to do more with the quality of the teams and how they prepared.
Some of the car's were runnin 180° header's, Junior Johnson ran those header's on his car's for many years. My Father always said "sounds like a buncha angry hornets!" 😂 Pops was right, they did! RIP BGS Sr 🙏✝️
I turned 13 in 1977 and this era of NASCAR was golden, I could watch this all day just for the cars alone.

Thanks! Enjoyed the video very much. I was about two weeks away from my 11th birthday at the time of this race.
I was 22yrs old. Big fan.
I was 11 two months before!! Cool
by the time of this race, i was -28 years old
Gosh it would be so cool if NASCAR and CBS (I think???) put up more of these in HD like they did with 1979 Daytona and others!!!

He is the king wish i could go back
Last race of the K&K Insurance 71
That same year, their best driver, Bobby Issac, died of a heart attack at Hickory
Yep. They’d be rebranded by the Firecracker 400
70s were booming. Star Wars came out that weekend.
This may well have been Elizabeth Taylors most thrilling movie ...
Seems like when there's a celebrity at the race, Richard really gets up on the wheel🎉
David mentions the heat- as he is standing outside in a suit.

It was possible back then because only abou 5 cars were as competitive as today 25 cars. I mean car/driver/team combination.

The zenith of stock car racing. Glad I witnessed this era.

Today i learned that Neil Bonnet once drove the #71 K&K Dodge and that it was its last race
Air date on CBS June 11, 1977

Looks like VCR copy of a copy. Too bad.
Why do they sound like Indy cars??
