I talked with 1960 NASCAR champ Rex White about this race and the track. The track was coming apart in chunks which caused a lot of damage to the cars and contributed to several of the wrecks. That's one of the reasons cars were running various things to protect the radiators and windshields. A chunk of asphalt at 140 mph through the radiator or windshield could definitely ruin your day. Great video. It's much appreciated.
CAN YOU IMAGINE TODAY'S NASCAR DRIVER'S TRYING TO MUSCLE ONE OF THESE BEASTS AROUND CHARLOTTE AT SPEED?? NO POWER STEERING, TRUCK TIRES, JUST A GUARDRAIL, AND THE SEATS THESE BRAVE MEN SAT IN??
Aside from the Busch brothers and Truex Jr, no. Not at all. I don’t think their daddies would allow it. And you can forget about the girls and ladies lol
Sure I can. Heck, look at Rex White - he was tiny and did just fine in those cars and won a championship too, and if you think any of today's drivers aren't fitter than him, you've got another think coming.
The track was tearing up so bad that most of the cars has put wire mesh screens over the grills to protect the radiators and wire screens in front of the drivers window area in case large pieces of asphalt came up over the hood. They were so rushed trying to finish this track in time for the projected grand opening date the asphalt hadn't set long enough and wasn't ready for these heavy cars and the speeds of the day. Some of the pictures of the cars during this race look more like something from a demolition derby car.
I believe that prior to 1960, there were only two 500-mile races in all of motorsports: Indycar's Indianapolis "500" (first run in 1911) and NASCAR's Daytona "500" (begun in 1959). Apart from endurance races for sports cars like Sebring and Le Mans, this was the longest race with a fixed number of miles or kilometers.
When your gas tank is leaking with a fist sized hole, use a cloth rag to plug it. Then after leaking all over the track, do a pitstop to enjoy a cigarette in your flammable racing attire?!

My Mom was the scorer for Joe Lee Johnson's car at this race.

Amazing video! this must have been pretty hard to find, I haven't seen any other footage of this race on RUclips! Good job!
Wild arse video, would love to see a better copy. Its out there too. THANKS FOR this GREAT post
OMG miracle no serious injuries. 60 pontiac one of my favorites we had a Bonneville convert.
The music will drive you nuts but the mud flaps are the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on a NASCAR.

Great footage! Spoiler alert: Bongos and fake tire squeals begin at 9:30.
Love the mud flaps maybe we should try that again. 😱🙀🤪
Could do like the old Trans Ams of the 70's. Just make the body panel fit around the mud flap.
That music reminded me of driver education videos....

Southern 500 in Darlington in the 50`s I think

Notice how many cars have the number forward on the side like they do in 2022.
How in the world did the Armco barrier survive even one blow from these heavy cars, much less multiple hits!
I don't know which was worse...... the music or the commentary. Video was pretty good for the day......
Too bad the dirt track he owned and operated for years in Cleveland, Tn was just torn down.

Some of the music in this wouldn’t sound out of place in Speed Racer.
Where do you think the producers of Speed Racer got the sound effects from?
Why post the winner in the title? It's would be a lot more enjoyable for those of us who didn't know who won.
This video shows how much the sport has improved since 1960.I read online recently that there are some who say that the race distance is too long.
Improved?

Wears one down rather quickly. Green and pink cars unlucky in those days. Must run sun up to sundown to get this done.
