This is really incredible! I've seen small pieces of this this race here and there (like the part where Buck Baker combs his worries away 3:57) but never the full spectacle. Junior would've had it in the bag had he not blown a tire, but still a great win for flyin Freddy! Thanks for posting this!
I recall as a kid back then [as reported in the news] that the configuration of the Charlotte Motor Speedway made it hard on the tires of that era, as tires changes every pitstop was not the norm.
The heat of late Spring weather and the 600 miles distance may have also contributed to the tire issues of the day, too.
@@bloqk16 I completely agree! I once remember hearing Charlotte speedway has a slightly sloped straightaway, I'm not sure if that's true but I wouldn't be surprised if that could've been a factor too.
Edit - I just looked it up, it is true. Apparently, Charlotte's front and back straightaways are banked 5 degrees. 👍

Got my jaws slapped over this race when they showed it on wide world of sports the next Saturday. My sister was a big junior Johnson fan I like fords and I kept telling her all through the race that number 28 was going to win. Just as the tire blew she was already celebrating junior's win, and I said and there goes 28 past him! Man I don't think I had ever been slapped that hard, and she hated racing from then on.
Quite the helicopter shot at the beginning. Also I love the striped referee uniforms for the officials, they should bring those back.

Junior had Charlotte figured out this year & this car. Cut tire cost him this race but he came right back & won the fall event here (National 500).
Junior had the most infamous blown tire til Dale Sr. at Daytona nearly 3 decades later!!!
