The most emotional part for me is when it switches from Freddie to Brian and the realization that it was the last work of Freddie. You can feel the heartbreak in Brian's voice as well.

While Freddie often/mostly sang in mid-tenor, his “natural” voice was baritone... you are hearing his baritone here.
The last verse is Brian May singing... Freddie died before they could complete the song.

I cry every time that I listen to this song.
Freddie said that he just wanted to sing and perform and that's what he did..
Yes, he left us too soon.
I also wonder what more Freddie could have done if he hadn't died so soon.
But we're lucky to have Queen and Freddie's music through RUclips and other technologies.
I think that once you get over the hurt that this song brings to the listener, in time, you'll listen to the song again.
Just like I do and you'll still feel emotional but hearing Freddie's last song will be worth it.

    It’s late

    Liar
    Seven seas of rhye
    Stone cold crazy
    Keep your self alive
    Now I’m here

I think what you thought was different was him singing in his natural baritone, which he rarely did. Also note, according to Brian May, Freddie was doing this a line at a time, three times each, so that's all they had to work with. Got to the last verse and said he'd be back, but never returned to the studio. So Brian May sings the last versus, then it ends with Freddie doing the audience call and response, and a snippet from all the Queen songs, ending with "Going Back," recorded by Freddie under the name Larry Lurex before the first Queen album was released.

In my darkest time I always resort to some Queen therapy. I start with listening to Mother love, that words the dispair. Then I listen to hopeful "A hard life", after that "my melancholy blues", then some lighter songs, and within the hour I end up dancing through the house singing along with "I was born to love you" Works every time for me!

It’s definitely a sad song because it was Freddie’s last. Each time I hear “I can’t take if you see me cry, I long for peace before I die” it totally wrecks me 😭. And Brian singing that final verse is pure raw emotion and it’s very ambient and sad almost like his guitar is weeping in that guitar solo. Great reactions!

I'm watching your reaction 4 years later and I'm crying with you. No apologies needed. So many touching moments in this song. The moment for me was when Larry Lurex comes in singing Goin' Back. I wonder whose idea it was to bring back Freddie's release under that name. "I think I'm going back to the things I learned so well in my youth." So we saw him as an adult, youngster and a baby. Brian's voice 💔💔💔💔

  • @DonnaleaSpencer

I think it's different sounding because he is a natural baritone from what I've read. But he so rarely sang in that range. (It was probably easier on his throat). Then he soars on the higher notes! Big Sigh. And huge cry on my end too. Interviews with Brian & Roger support that all Freddie wanted to do it sing anything & everything they'd write for him until he could sing no longer. Thank you. You are so awesome to review & react.

    • @Motown-1966
      @Motown-1966 5 лет назад

Danelle Covey...I agree! As an "oldhead", I believe in this song, the “Mother Love” was for the love of his woman, Mary and not his Mother Jer. The video to this also eludes that the “Mother Love” is for the man’s wife/lover/mother of his child & not his Mother.
That said, I think whenever Freddie sings about “Mama” like in Boheiman Rhapsody and Liar, he’s speaking of his woman & not his Mother. Men back in that era often used slang to referred their “Women” or “old lady” as “Mama”...especially in the late ‘60’s & all through the ‘70’s ✌🏾.

This song is freaking beautiful and it’s about to make your eyes tear up

  • @ZENOBlAmusic
    @ZENOBlAmusic 5 лет назад +6

As already noted in some other comments, Freddie just used more of his baritone voice then normal for most of this song. The interesting fact is that Freddie was naturally a baritone but he sang 99% of his music in the tenor range, which is quite a feat. The bartone gives Freddie's voice a lot of warmth and thickness, that is why his voice sounded very powerful in the mid to higher registers. If a tenor sang the same notes it would sound thinner, you can hear this with Adam Lambert, his voice sounds a lot thinner than Freddie's voice when he sings with the rest of the band.
Freddie's voice also changed through the years, as he aged his voice became deeper and even more baritone. This meant that he could at times struggle to reach some of the same high notes from the songs at beginning of Queen's career. In the early parts of his career he had a very delicate, pure, flute like quality to his voice. His mid to higher range sounded much more powerful and stronger in the 80's, but he lost those pure delicate touches. His voice could be deceptive in that his middle or mid-higher range had so much tonal warmth that you might not realise that he was actually singing higher than what you might assume.
However, his voice was actually at it's best right before his death on the Innuendo album. Brian May described his voice at the end as being so clear that it was like a laser through a crystal, and he also confirmed that Freddie's voice was at its best in the end. Perhaps the main reasons was that his voice had enough time to rest because they didn't tour at that stage, and he might have received some vocal lessons from Montserrat Caballe. In the end he was able to use his strong, powerful baritone sound on the mid to high notes, while at the same time singing the delicate parts with that same pure, light and flute like quality as he did in his youth. It was like a best of both in the end.

Freddie doesn't actually sing opera in Barcelona, if you really want to hear his opera voice you have to listen to The Golden Boy or especially Ensueño (he sings the whole song in his natural opera baritone voice) with Montserrat Caballe. I think The Golden Boy is a much better song than Barcelona, but almost no one reacts to it.

Part of the reason Freddie could not finish recording Mother Love is that he had told Brian 'you write and I will sing' and said he would sing each line 3 times so they could choose the best ones. This meant he actually sung thrice what is heard in the song and hence why he got so exhausted.

The line, "I long for peace before I die" holds so much significance as it's clear he was actually on the way out as the recording was taking place.

His voice was weak so he sang in a lower octave.
Now that you've come to this point.
You MUST react to the tribute the remaining members of Queen made for Freddie in 1997. It was also the last appreance of John Deacon. You can definitely see the hurt and pain the guys were still feeling.
It was written by Brian May and Roger Taylor added a verse.
    It's heartbreaking, but beautiful.
It's called "No One But You (Only The Good Die Young")
The official video must be seen.

Most certainly, your emotions to this song is very strong and natural as you knew AHEAD of listening that Freddie died doesn’t finish the song. This pre-knowledge played on your heartstrings much more than if you’d happened to listen to this as just another Queen song in their catalogue.
That said, this was a genuine reaction that hit you to your core. There’s no need to explain your tears. It’s just refreshing that you HAD some tears which shows your compassion for the situation at hand. Stay true to yourself and you won’t go wrong ✌🏾.

A Winter's Tale. He wrote from his hospital room looking out the window at what he was seeing. Love this song. Guide me home is another one.

I would say thats the sadest song of Queens catalogue. Freddies last song the ever wrote by himself is called "A Winters Tale" and it has a much more postive vibe to it.

It's getting hard for him to sing the notes, It's beautiful when he can though. I think in this song, he's trying hard to push out those notes, but it's taken its toll. You can hear he's tired.
PS I LOVE YOUR REACTION! And I appreciate your comments :).

Нет ничего более впечатляющего, настоящего, чем слёзы крепкого мужчины. Думаю, это одна из тех песен, которая заставляет людей на всех континентах плакать одинаково.

Got tearful with you. I too find that last two verses the hardest, and the final tract of sounds, and the baby crying...I just weep! It's like Freddie at the end trying to say he is going back to his youth, and the crying baby at the end always makes me think that he has gone o n into a new life. I dont know if that was the intent with how the song was finished, but those are the thoughts that my mind wanders too. A poignant reaction, thanks for the honesty. We feel the same way too.

If you want to hear Queen's songs that will cheer you up listen to Keep Passing The Open Windows,Rain Must Fall and All God's People but of course there are few sad songs that you shouldn't omit under any circumstances. Don't Try So Hard,Bijou or Freddie's solo songs Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow, Guide Me Home/How Can I Go On.They are all masterpieces
