Payton is actually a time traveller Viking
Got to be
Bullshit. This man pronounced þ like an English P. If you're going to sing an Old Norse song, have the decency to study the language and do it justice.
He is never a time traveling viking. He is a viking he just is immortal.

The amount of people that knows old norse today is a limited few in remote parts of central Sweden. This is not even close.
It's the guttural growls in his voice that make it real for me. Delightful, invigorating, and just plain BAD ASS. Keep it up sir! Make our Gods proud
I listened to this at work
My beard grew and now I give my boss raises 🙌
.... the fact that Payton is able to not only get into character for what he does... but he feels the emotions that he should in order to make the perfect vocals... a true artist in his natural state of mind is what we have witnessed in this video!!
@Cheap Coffee Icelandic is not dissimilar from Old Norse, a medieval language. In fact, Icelandic is thought to be a dialect of Old Norse. It is considered an insular language in that it has not been influenced greatly by other languages and so has not changed all that much since the 9th and 10th centuries.
@Cheap Coffee Icelandic is modernized Old Norse. And when I consider the story behind this song, I find this version to be the most suitable.
@Cheap Coffee cornball
@Cheap Coffee Although he is very expressive with his poorly-pronounced Icelandic, his expressions come across as... misplaced. I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to "beautiful oars" (fagrar arar--excuse the lack of accent marks) with as much seething brutality as he has. o_0 I would also not want to be on a ship with him if he is going to "halda sva til hafnar" like that, as I'd be afraid of it sinking!
If my reply happens to have actually caught the attention of a native Icelander... could you translate the words "fley" and "knerri" for me? I know they refer to ships (from context), but I can't seem to hunt down anything beyond the obvious. Help a silly, confused American out?
@Cheap Coffee WHO FUCKING CARES SHUT THE FUCK UP SHIT HEAD NOBODY FUCKING CARES WHAT TO FUCKING PRONOUNCED IT NOBODY FUCKING CARES
The battle cries of our ancestors throughout history have always been amazing no matter the culture it hails from. I could only imagine what it felt like to hear one of these chants echoing across the waters toward land, must have been intimidating.
No
@@tinygreenguy968 yes
I can see why vikings were so feared....I'm not ashamed to admit I fear hearing this. But also pumps me tf up!
I honestly wonder what that sounds like. Like I'm extremely curious.

@@kunobuje542 Poetry wasn’t excluded from viking warriors, I don’t think . Egill Skallagrímsson was a viking poet. Apparently this song is about him, like the other guy said. He killed a bunch of boys when he was a kid with an axe because they cheated him in a game

The rolls in his voice the pure fury u feel without much backing is amazing
Imagine a Viking singing this to his enemies before battle. They would all run before the song is finish, this is terrifying.
This is actually more of a poem or song a mother sings to a child there battle chants are way more intimidating
It's not terrifying
It's only terrifying because of his voice

I added this song to one of my Spotify playlists, not realizing it was in Old Norse. Driving along in my car this song came on, and I was thrown for a moment. To say that I enjoy this version over the English version is an understatement! Something about hearing the lyric in Old Norse makes it a thousand times better, makes it more real. If that makes sense to anyone. Peyton, if you read these, please do more in Old Norse!
He’s such an amazing vocalist
I agree….putting it in old Norse just adds something to it that makes so amazing
It's also a different song.. same melody, totally different story, much more tragic
The old Norse makes it so og that I almost want to go raid a city
This is not the full version! For lovers of Nordic chant, the text :
Þat mælti mín móðir,

Saying that this is old norse is like saying that apple pie is British.
The fact is that this poem is from the Icelandic sagas (Egils saga) and is in Icelandic. It is part of Icelandic history and identity. Icelandic children are taught this poem in elementary school.
Iceland wouldn’t exist if the Danes,Swedes,Norse, and all the other Scandinavians hadn’t decided to go settle it and other places like Greenland, so yea it’s probably old Norse. The evolution of Scandinavian languages is and odd one, most of their languages stayed the same for the most part. There has been changes, but not drastic ones.
@@michaelhicks7478 What's your point? Of course there would no one live there if no one had settled there. Same as with America. The inuit people lived in Greenland long before Scandinavians started to go there.
Of corse you could argue that Icelandic is in fact old norse. It really comes down to timing. When did old norse in Iceland become Icelandic?
The poem is definitely Icelandic and from the Icelandic sagas.
@@12carlsberg First just want to say this entire conversation is fascinating and I seriously enjoy it....
I think what he is really getting at, is that it wouldn't be surprising to learn that Icelandic, especially this early poem, was heavily influenced (and may even contain) some form of Old Norse as a root language. Much like Latin in Spanish-speaking dialects.
This man's voice literally sends shivers down my spine. Love this
Just put this as my ringtone, soothing the soul hearing it. Brings back memories as a child

So chilling. Anytime I hear old norse or even modern icelandic, norwegian etc chants/songs... it just creates these intense feelings. Like being called somewhere. Can't say that for any other music I've ever heard. Raido, voluspá and helvegen from wardruna and Trøllabundin from eivør... there's nothing to describe it adequately.
Pretty sure thats the idea behind some parts of the old language and the chats were sung while marching and such so im not suprised
I know exactly what you are talking about. I was thinking the same exact thing. The majoiry of my ancestry is Scandinavian and when I hear these types of songs (especially this one) it feels like I am being called back home.

This guy could do Ring Around The Rosie in Old Norse and make it sound just as intimidating.

The singer's diction here is difficult and sounds so good. Very intense! I think the technique must be at least partly throat singing as well. For reference check out the group Hu from....Mongolia? Hu also sing in an ancient style layered with modern metal.
The HU is indeed from Mongolia btw
