Defenders don't play smart when they try to defend Messi. Instead of trying to slide and dive in they should be forcing him to his right foot and playing more zonal defense rather than man marking for best results. They should also take advantage of his small frame and wrestle him off the ball whenever possible.

Do you honestly think that world class defenders and coaches haven't thought of that? Just watch the videos. He can go either way, can see things others can't and can create space from nothing whist surrounded by opposing players.. He's just that good. He is capable of destroying any defensive system. His small frame is an advantage (lower centre of gravity), much like Maradona or George Best. This is why he can change speed and direction so quickly. The only disadvantage it poses is in the air ( the weakest part of his game in my opinion). Apart from that, he is basically unstoppable on his day.
