Fast forward 20 years later and Messi burst onto the scene. Messi obviously became the GOAT himself, but at one point his own people didn’t like him and were harsh on him. He was the best dribbler, assisted, scorer, playmaker, but none of that mattered to the Argentinians because he wasn’t winning titles for Argentina.
Now, after winning them titles Messi is loved in Argentina just like Maradona is. You will see images of both Maradona and Messi whenever you go to Argentina. Some of them can’t decide who is better, but for most is Messi.

And yes, indeed, Messi had not won the World Cup prior to this. It was the one stain on his career, the career of the man who won everything, multiple times at that. He was clearly the greatest of all time before this. Before 2021 even, where he won his first Copa America, but this basically shut up the greatest critics and if I'd have to slap a number on it I'd say 80% of the professional footballers/ ex players/coaches/commentators, .. are now in agreement he truly is the greatest of all time. Most of the people you'll find disagreeing are the ones with an emotional attachement to certain players, or the older folks, drowning in nostalgia.
when you asked ''he never won a world cup'', you should know, that it's actually a big privilage to be able to win it at some point in footballers life, because the tournament is only played once in 4 years. A lot of footballers became pro around 20-23 years of age (of course there are exceptions, some are pro since 16yo, some after the age of 26 but average is around 20-23 years of age), you have to be good enough to be picked to be a part of your national team which has the squad depth of only 26 players for a tournament. So if you became a pro at 21, you also became so good, that you get the invitation to the national team at the same year and the world cup is also played at the same year - you probably only be around for 2-4 tournamnets in your life, and of course you have to be one of the 26 best players of your country for every season. Some players only have one shot and after some time, their form is not enough to be part of the national squad anymore. So there is indeed a small amount of players who can call themselves a world champions. For example Carvajal who is a regular starter at Real Madrid for several years, has only played his first Euro tournament at the age of 32, because there was always somebody better for his position. Euro is also played once in 4 years, so it was possibly also his last tournament.

This video is more like for his fans, he could not achieve the last and biggest trophy in football world - World Cup, which plays on national team level, instead of club level, and it's happens once in 4 years. So you basically have only few times at best to play in this tournament. And after becoming the God of football, after winning everything that he could, he could not win this cup, he even once reached the final of the tournament but Germans were stronger. Ans in his last wourld cup, being 35 years old, he gave his everything to win this trophy, and he won. Like in the movie. Which officially made him the best football player ever. Both players are two of the greatest to ever play this game. Messi is pure natural godly talent. Ronaldo is the definition of hard work and dedication. I have always been on the Messi side bc I like his style more. He can do everything Ronaldo can do (Ronaldo can’t necessarily do everything Messi can). Messi is the shy/quiet superstar that wants his teams to succeed and it’s not always about him. Ronaldo is more of the global icon who wants everything to be about him. Messi’s teams always perform better with Messi playing, you can make a legit conversation that Ronaldo’s teams play towards his strengths and therefor could actually perform better without him.
So I’ll always go for Messi whose overall game is better, and whose personality is much much better (in my opinion). Oh and Messi has a World Cup….. lol Ronaldos cockiness is what made me hate him growing up, I have since learned to respect him as an all time great but still alway rubbed me the wrong way, especially the several times he has taken off the captains armband and thrown it on the ground or kick it (and no it’s not just a piece of cloth) and also he has walked out on his team before the final whistle which is just bad behavior.

For most of us Argentinians wanted to be world champions, but even more wanted Messi to be. It was the same with Maradona when he was banned, we wanted for us, but more for him... the path of the myths, the tale that is always the same, the hero.... we love the talent that beats the strength, we love team coordination, but more the improvisation. We love our playmakers, Messi, Maradona (IMHO the GOAT), or Riquelme, Bochini and a long etc.
These who have a 10 in their back. And when we admire a rival player... most of the time has the same number. (it is not exclusive in Brazil you have many numbers to chose to admire).
But the 10, the one who thinks, the one more "habilidoso", the one who converts boredom into danger, discipline in creativity... "el enganche", is always the first to be evaluated.

It is held every 4 years So, if your nation is great at soccer, and you qualify for each one, and you are a great player at 18, and you don't get injured or lose your powers in your 30s, and you are in great form for 18-20 years, you might get 5 attempts. 1 goes down the drain cause of some bs, fight, money, manager, relations on the team....second goes cause of luck. you hit the post, their gk turns into superman, you slip at penalty shootout....you have 3 tries, to get one easy opponent in ko stage, for ref to not see a small foul, corner or some shit like that, and to have all of your teamates in form and liking eachother. then if you reach the final, and all those things get alligned, a player that should score goals have a horrible game. It happened to Messi in 2014. when Higuain butchered like 3 or 4 sitters. It is so hard. I think you got the idea just from those short highlights. Argentina goalkeeper made a hero save at the last second of the game.He doesn't save that, Messi doesn't have a WC. And he was not supposed to save that. It was insane. Then a penalty shootout. So it being his first WC isnt some surprise. Cristiano Ronaldo has none. The closst he got was fourth place. Meaning he lost Semifinal match, then Bronze medal match. It was 18 years ago. World cup is the biggest tournament in football. It only happens every 4 years, so players don't have many opportunities to win it. He got to the world cup finals in 2014 but lost against Germany. He got to the finals in several other important international tournaments but lost one after the other one and almost retired from the national team, until he decided to try ONE more time, and that was the last world cup.

We can say that Messi is the greatest of this century, he's a genius with an amazing career, but we can't compare him to Pelé (from Brazil), people tend to forget about the past and consider "history" the last 20~30 years. Pelé played 4 world cups and won 3 (1958, 1962, and 1970). Pelé has over 1000 goals scored in his career and according to FIFA he would have won 7 Ballon d'Or prizes but unfortunately at that time, non-European players were not eligible for the prize. Pelé is known as "Rei do Futebol" (King of Soccer) and is worldwide well-known. Messi is a beast, but we can't forget about the past. A lot of people say that "in Pelé's era soccer player's overall quality was not 'as good' as it is right now so it was easier to be good" but this also applies to the technology players have today. Back then, players didn't have these stratospheric contracts, nor 50+ people looking for them medical-wise, nor high-tech balls and cleats, or superfast medical treatment for bad injuries, etc.
I'm from Brazil BTW, I didn't see Pelé play (obviously), and Messi is the greatest player I've seen play so far. But I still think that Brazil has/had some players who have more overall skills than Messi (to mention a few: Ronaldinho R10, Ronaldo Phenomenon R9, and Neymar) but Brazilian players usually don't have that long career, and on this matter CR7 and Messi are galaxies beyond.
