Oddly enough both guitars(the AZ and the RG) had fret sprout brand new out of the box. The AZ less so but they both had fret ends that were noticeably sticking out when running your hand down the edge of the neck. An easy fix but not what you'd expect on a brand new guitar. @@LukeJackandWill the DK24 has many versions, there are also versions with floyds and hardtails if you didn't know, and they have many of the same features and obviously the same shapes. And The neck is very thin on the Charvel, very similar to Ibanez Wizard necks, which isn't really something most Fusion players gravitate towards. the SD Full Shred is definitely a metal pickup, it's really high output, it's available in the other DK24 models and its name says it all. And also, Guthrie doesn't play a DK24, he plays his own signature model that inspired the DK24 2PT version, and they're quite different
I own a Charvel DK22 (the 22 fret version of the DK24) and was able to try the Ibanez AZ again today at a music store after I got curious reading the comments here last night. I would pick the Charvel. Both guitars can achieve the tones I need in a superstrat-type guitar, but the Charvel, especially its neck, is a lot more comfortable to play. The Ibanez AZ feels almost like a D-shape neck similar to the SRV signature strat, but thicker and rounder. For me, the extra heel cut-out on the Ibanez AZ doesn’t help with upper fret access. It still felt like I was playing a traditional bolt-on neck which felt like grasping bat or a cupping a softball where as the Charvel neck transitions seamlessly at the neck joint. I find myself changing my grip beyond the 12th fret on the Ibanez AZ. For reference, I own a Fender Strat with a U-shaped neck and the Ibanez AZ is still thicker than that. I also own an Ibanez SV5470 and the Charvel’s neck feels almost like the wizard neck on that but “less square” with a bit more girth. In summary, both guitars sound great, but it’s best to go out, try them both, and pick the one you are comfortable with. For my hands and for what I’m used to: Charvel.

Agree that would be more of an apples to apples in terms of pickup configuration. The HHS version of the Charvel is more of a rock guitar than the Ibanez as a result. The Ibanez sounds more like a traditional strat here as a result.
If Charvel did SS frets and had the switching system like the AZ, it would own in all categories. I had a premium AZ and sold it because the neck was too fat for me. But the pups in the AZ are amazing and is better for cleans compared to the Charvels.
just got my hands on both of these bad boys at a sam ash in san antonio. i own 4 ibanez and was thinking the AZ would be it for me, BUT that charvel HSS sounded so damn good, played so damn good and looked so damn good that i ordered a pink one that same day. played though various amps and a plethora of plectrum i carry with me. i cant wait for my main axe to get here.
@@robertm.1098 the HSH was good but i really wanted single coil sound. i would really recommend trying it out. it almost feels like a ibanez neck so was not much getting use to for me. also since i got the first revision i dont have locking nuts and consistently have to retune. only downside but have not modified it otherwise. the finish and neck are what i ended up liking. the setup is so good also nice low action with no buzz. the trem is good also i like the simplicity of it.
I love both, I just don't really like the look of the charvel but I've heard from many sources that it's neck is slightly nicer to play, especially at the super high frets.
I got an AZ2202A (the 22-fret, ash-bodied Prestige) and i'm loving it so far. Seems like the biggest deal-breaker for people is the fatter neck and i just don't get it, as a life-long Wizard neck player the jump to the AZ was seamless for me, it's just a really comfortable neck. The coil-splitting option is awesome too, the cleans sound killer. Only con for me would be the angled jack input, ironically, it just makes it kinda hard to play in the classical position. Haven't tried any Charvel yet (no store near me has any) but i'd love to, they look great.
Always choose the one with stainless steel frets, they are incredible (no wear, no rust, glassy feel for bends, strings have less friction and less wear too!)
I've played both and they're great guitars but Charvel neck feels alien to me. It's has great tone but the neck carve is bit odd. Ibby AZ necks are far more comfortable to me and I slightly favor their tone over Charvels. I really hope that Ibanez would make 24 fret AZ with HSH pickup config, in my mind it's the perfect players guitar!
@Eric Byrd it looks like the full shred is already a really bright pickup for an alder body plus maple neck. I am not the only one that notice this it appears that alot of people that actually owns the guitar feels the same. Its like when ibanez use the tone zone on already dark sounding guitars.
It's thin probably on purpose in the middle 3 pickup positions to give you that Fender sound range for versatility. But it's very thick in the 2 humbuckers positions to cover that spectrum as well. If you've owned and liked Fenders you'll love these as they give you Fender with also some serious humbucker attitude.
@@Mfr3ak I feel u all about this lol I have an hsh Honestly just use the tone knob turn it down a bit It does wonders!!! I even tuned down and got sick deathmetal sounds !!!
If the Charvel featured a straight radius instead of compound and also had stainless steel frets I would have chosen it hands down. For these two reasons I bought the Ibanez (the 24 fret version) and it is by far one of the most playable guitars upon which I've ever laid my hands. It's like a poor man's Suhr, but it's great in its own right and it can hang with any guitar out there. Perfect example of just how top notch Indonesian manufacturing can be. The fret job is insane -- I can't help to think I may have been a bit lucky in this regard (frets are perfectly crowned and leveled). I'll admit I prefer the looks (and the pickups) of the Charvel but the Ibby has the features that really matter to me (ss frets and straight radius).
Finally another guitar player that prefers straight radiuses :) I can't stand compound radiuses and why people praise them so much... They make it really hard to have a balanced setup
@@Mojojojoe that's why I like straight radiuses. If the compound was subtle (for example 10-12 or 12-14) it'll be acceptable, but 12-16 for example is way too much
@@Mr.Goldbar I think you may have misunderstood my point. Compound radius needs to be used to keep the string action even across all fretboard with the exception of completely no radius (flat) because the string width between the nut and bridge is different.
@@bluematrix5001 Purely personnal preference on this point. The Ibanez has a kind of C neck, just a little bit thinner than fender's modern C but still chunky compared to the wizzard, and charvel's neck is clearly thinner, a thin C/D neck, funnily much closer to a wizard than the one on the ibanez, just a tiny bit thicker wich i found more confortable. To me the Charvel speed neck profile is very very close to perfection, but, once again personnal preference. And don't get me wrong, i love C necks too, especially on a rounder radius neck, but i feel like it has nothing to do with these ibanez, i get that's their shot of a superstrat so they are keeping some more stratty specs, but still, you buy an ibanez because you wanna shred aswell and they got great neck profiles for this.
@@iDrraaaK To me those new Charvel have a great neck, been said that I do not knoe for me which other options of great necks similar to the Chavels are wirth a try
I kept the Ibanez after trialling both - it's each to their own ears and neck thickness preferences - and both guitar had 1 or 2 pro's over the other. I kept the Ibanez for tonal properties - love it
Charvel all day for tone alone, but was the tone pot wide open? Pretty sure the Charvel has a no load pot which would make it far brighter than the Ibanez. And if the amp settings were the same, it might have accounted for how dark that Ibanez was. If not and it was compensated, then a guitar that dark sounding (Ibanez) on a Fender amp would sound super dark on anything else I think.
I've seen a LOT of people complaining about tuning stability with the AZ, because the bridge is somewhat custom (idk?) and the spring not the right ones for it, so people tend to replace them and it fixes the problem. I have not witnessed that with charvel's dk24 that much. So right out of the box the charvel's tuning stability is better most of the time.
they are speced out close enough , given their respective price points , that it almost completely comes down to tonal preference. The Charvel seems to tend more towards rock players while the Ibanez has tone shaping more suitable for a wider variety of musical styles.
Both are great guitars but I saw a lot of comments saying thay az series fret works are horrible. I liked az sound more over charvel but for me, it's hard to ignore the flaw on the frets. Any thoughts?
Apparently QC on Ibanez premium is'nt great at all from what i've heared. But you can have bad fretwork, of perfect one, with either of these, depending on your luck. Look at the hole picture too, you might have like the AZ sound better here, but Charvel offers differents pickups configurations on dk24, and is overall more versatile, while still offering 24 frets. On the other hand, AZ has something great that the dk24 hasnt : stainless steel frets, that could make a huge difference in the choice. To me that's the only thing the AZ has over the DK24, but it matters. But for me not that much, i find ibanez finishes ugly as f*ck, and i'm in love with the pink DK24 HSS, so i bought one, and paid for a SS refret. The real choice is here : neck profile, ss frets or not, esthetic, pickups configuration.
I have the Ice Blue HSS AZ Prestige, not a fan of the Hyperion... It can't do metal chugs, it's muddy and mushy.. Wished it was a medium output Dimarzio instead, w/c can do a bit of everything
i was too, ive had both. charvel for a year and sold it. ibanez plays soooo good. stainless steel frets are amazing too, just to take into consideration
Exactly right. I own a strat and a tele but have been looking to buy my first superstrat. I don’t know if I should go with something that feels familiar or something completely new.
Both guitars are good and versatile in the same way,it's a personal choice,I prefere the Charvel neck but I was in a right spot with the AZ neck as well (Ibanez AZ necks are similar to the modern Fender C,a bit skinner than that and obviously 12" radius instead of 9.5",measured with tools).
I like to charvel I wish they could have did a better job paint job . But no biggie going to repaint my charvel. However the neck or are well made very easy to set up also. Say in tune. And the radius on the charvel couldn't. Get any better.
Um on the charvel dk models i believe they all come with full shred pickups and they were designed to come with the dk models like that ibanez does so there's no edge for the ibanez in that aspect either those full shreds are very good pickups
From having tried both, they both play great. The Charvel neck is a lot thinner and a little flatter. To me the Ibanez sounds better but the charvels definitely look better :p
i want to say something important. sooo ive had a dk24 for a year and im selling it. i bought an ibanez premium and man let me tell you. stainless steel frets. the thing plays like butter, pickups sound realllyy good. also the neck is thicker, charvel has a paper thin neck which i loved at first but the ibanez neck just feel really good. its comfortable to hold and play and feels like your holding something. also the trem bar is not screw in you just clip in and holds and move it freely. love the charvel but i couldnt play it anymore after playing the ibanez for 3 months now
I have only played the Ibanez AZ Premium so far. I quite liked it. Tones galore. Neck NOT a baseball bat... medium C at best. In the everyman's super Strat category, I'm more interested in the new Andy Timmons AZT due anytime now. Be sure to compare when you can.
This is my conundrum at the moment. I want the stainless steel frets and like the stock pickups of the Ibanez more, but I like the look of the Charvel more and think with aftermarket pickups it could be damn near perfect. Also had a ton of trouble with Ibanez “Premium” in the past.
Fan of Ibanez guitars, but I'd say that at a full $300 less, the Charvel is worth a serious look, especially for fans of their necks and the HSH configuration. Cool video.
Anything from Ibanez is quality, specialy when you enter Prestige level and you can compare 1800 euros Japan made guitars with 3000 euros US made guitars. I prefer the neck on Ibanez, best i ever played, my hands are tiny, so it helps a lot.
I don't think I can make a fair judgement on which is best until I've had a fumble with both... Maybe a good idea would be if you guys sent me both guitars (lefthanded thanks), I would be able to decide honestly which one I really prefer. 🤣 Enjoyed the laff Joe 👍
Got a charvel in shell pink. Great guitar. Great feel and imo pretty good sounds from the pickups. Originally was looking for an ibanez az premium because of the stainless steel frets. My local guitar center didn’t have any AZ premiums or prestige’s at the time so went with charvel. In the mean time I was checking out other GCs that had az premiums but the guitar were all dinged up and unplayable. I saw on the GC app a few days later that an ibanez AZ signature (premium pretty much) was new and available. Got excited and exchanged my charvel for the ibanez since I was still within the 45 day return policy. Had some fret buzz but the truss rod needed adjustment anyways and was hoping it didn’t need fret work done. However it did, I couldn’t fix it with my own setup and didn’t want to pay the extra for fret level and dress. Unacceptable for a $1500 guitar. Came back to my local GC to “hopefully” take back my pink charvel but unfortunately GC is just garbage and I found a huge scrape dent on the roasted neck.... and it wasn’t even back on display yet. Learned my lesson to never get another guitar from GC. Just bought an other new charvel from reverb but in primer grey. After trying both the charvel HSS (has a litttle experience with HSH as well) and the AZ premium, it really depends on where you come from as a guitar player. If you came from metal and heavy rock and learned techniques relevant to those styles but want more versatility and cleaner sounds, the charvel is geared towards that. If you come from playing strats and playing more tradition styles of music but want a little hint of modern playing then the Ibanez AZ is the one to chose. Neck profiles are different. Charvel = slim fast neck. Easier to play IMO with the slim neck and compound radius. AZ = thicker beefier neck. Still easy to play but I felt the thicker necks created more darker tones that were less bright. (I actually prefer the opposite) Basswood on the AZ also is less bright than the alder charvel and that something that I also noticed in sound and attack. That being said I had a bad experience with the Az premiums heinous fret work. (It’s an ibanez thing cause I’ve had the same issues with RGs before but it could also be Indonesian manufacture issues). Didn’t like the basswood bodies. Pickups were great though and well balanced. Ibanez had better quality hardware as well. Charvel knobs feel a little cheap. AZ gives more versatility with the dyna mix switch for tapping and splitting pickups. It was fun to try all the sounds. At the end of the day I’m happy to go back to the charvel and will have it refret to stainless and might install other pickups in the future. Love the satin finish more than the AZ gloss finish as well. Let me know if anyone has any question or these two guitars. I’ve had a lot of experience with both these last few weeks haha.
legatoTRAIL the charvels necks is slightly thicker than the rgs but very comparable. If you’re accustomed to the rg neck the charvels neck will feel familiar.
@@dominickortega8489 Hey another question about necks haha, how close the az neck felt to a fender modern C? and the same question about the charvel to a modern C?, i had wizard RG necks and felt too thin for me, now i got a strat and like it a lot more, but i could handle a little thiner too
Kai Marte Ok, the Ibanez az is very comparable to a fender modern C. Only difference is that the Ibanez az has more shoulders and a slight flat spot on the back making it imo more comfortable than a modern c fender. So I guess it’s a little on the D shape side. The charvel to the modern fender c is a lot more different. The charvel is much much closer to wizard neck shape of an rg. If you’re used/like the modern c shape of the fender than the charvel is not going to feel familiar.
Az for me! Played both recently and charvel felt cheaper to me in the details, not as versatile, for my hands also loved the az neck, charvel too wide and almost hurt my hand to play it. That said charvel sounded great, would be better for more aggressive tones but less versatility
Tuning is the single most important feature, imo. And it's always overlooked. Do these Charvels have a rep for having difficult tuning? Or are you just saying the AZ is marginally better? Also,. If you have one...care to weigh in on ppl saying the AZ has almost a baseball fat neck (And not in a good way)?
Brandon Terrill yea I have really good studio headphones it was out of tune. It would be a good idea to make sure you are tuned up before you start recording.
I own this Charvel in Orange Crush and truly love the versatility of this guitar to go from heavy rock to Fendery finesse. Lot's of features and quality for the $'s. I was looking at the Japanese version of this AZ (AZ2204) prior because the reviews from the owners of this cheaper AZ224 from Indonesia were not as good.
My orange crush is coming in soon! Any issues on yours? How’s the fret work? I’m a fender player branching into more metal riffs so in think this guitar fits me
I love the guitar but there are 2 common issues (with mine as well). First is fret sprout (easily fixed - will use the sanding sponge for this) and tuning instability (not as cut and dried). After much consideration, I think it is the string trees they used that is causing the tuning problems. The break angle appears too sharp. So I plan to replace mine with Tusq trees that are raised higher as my approach to fix.
Nazmo King ok thanks for replying. My crush came in and everything seems great except I can’t get rid of fret buzz. It comes through the amp and What I’ve tried so far is adjusting the truss rod to give more relief and the buzz is still evident on the low E string from frets 1-5.
Robert Munguia hmmm...I guess you could raise the saddle on that string, or have a tech look and see if a fret needs leveling - which is no big deal on a fret or 2.
Always some asshole like to act like they know so much about guitars and make comment like you tune the guitar bet you don't even know how to play guitar and most of all like the guy that demo them

Love the versatility of the Ibanez!!! The design isn't what I would prefer, but to me: Ibanez wins!
Please do the Ibanez AZ224f against the DK24 HSS version
Agree that would be more of an apples to apples in terms of pickup configuration. The HHS version of the Charvel is more of a rock guitar than the Ibanez as a result. The Ibanez sounds more like a traditional strat here as a result.
The Charvel looks killer...!
The Ibanez looks like it was designed by a company that makes Bermuda shorts for the elderly...!
I realize it's kinda randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream new movies online?
@Bentley Isaiah i use Flixzone. You can find it on google :)
@Bentley Isaiah i watch on Flixzone. Just google for it :)
If Charvel did SS frets and had the switching system like the AZ, it would own in all categories. I had a premium AZ and sold it because the neck was too fat for me. But the pups in the AZ are amazing and is better for cleans compared to the Charvels.
Werent the fret edges too sharp for you in the AZ premium?
For me that was a big problem when i tried it at the local guitar center
And i felt like this guitar is about the specs but not the quality which I guess is the problem with the premium series
@@jerzyandraczko5060 no I owned 4 premiums and the AZ was no different... Very good fret ends. Even more rounded than the prestige AZ.
@@kenmasters007 shit that is strange
the neck was too fat compared to which?
just got my hands on both of these bad boys at a sam ash in san antonio. i own 4 ibanez and was thinking the AZ would be it for me, BUT that charvel HSS sounded so damn good, played so damn good and looked so damn good that i ordered a pink one that same day. played though various amps and a plethora of plectrum i carry with me. i cant wait for my main axe to get here.
I was just about to go there this weekend to compare them both. What did you like about the charvel? Thinking about the hsh
He seemed to enjoy playing the Ibanez more.
His fingers was probably warmed up more and he didn't have the whammy bar in the Ibanez.
How can an AI guitar machine enjoy anything? (Very good simulation).
Does the angle jack input bother you with a L shaped cable when you hold it classically?
Charvel for me, i love the cleans!
Always choose the one with stainless steel frets, they are incredible (no wear, no rust, glassy feel for bends, strings have less friction and less wear too!)
I blew by most of the vid, which has SS frets?
@@bluwng The ibanez AZ has Stainless steel frets. The Charvel doesn't.
oOVanHalenOo thanks
Ffs ss frets isn't a deal breaker.! Charvel all the way.!
lol this dudes name is stainless steel! SS is nice but it needs to be done right from the factory or else will be very hard work to level them.
Az47p1qm premium
So is the alnico 2 pro modified by charvel? Cause they don't come with allen head polepieces normally.
hchoe741 it’s custom for this guitar
I like more the looks of the charvel but every charvel dk24 2pt that i hear sounds extremly thin.
@@Mfr3ak I feel u all about this lol I have an hsh
Honestly just use the tone knob turn it down a bit
It does wonders!!!
Finally another guitar player that prefers straight radiuses :)
I can't stand compound radiuses and why people praise them so much... They make it really hard to have a balanced setup
@@Mr.Goldbar it actually helps to have consistent string action for every fret, mathematically speaking.
@@Mojojojoe hmmm... Pretty interesting, I'll definitely give it another try one day
I actually played both today at a music shop. Charvel dominates the Ibanez in every way.
Additionally whatever fuzz/od you're using here is fucking horrible and does nothing to demonstrate the driven tones both give.
The Charvel looks better and cheaper, the Ibanez AZ has a more comfortable neck and stainless steel frets.
I feel the Charvel to have a more comfy neck
Do you know what is the string spacing on the Charvel?
Which guitar stayed in tune better for you?
I've seen a LOT of people complaining about tuning stability with the AZ, because the bridge is somewhat custom (idk?) and the spring not the right ones for it, so people tend to replace them and it fixes the problem.
I have not witnessed that with charvel's dk24 that much.
So right out of the box the charvel's tuning stability is better most of the time.
they are speced out close enough , given their respective price points , that it almost completely comes down to tonal preference. The Charvel seems to tend more towards rock players while the Ibanez has tone shaping more suitable for a wider variety of musical styles.
O que vocês tem contra a parte de trás da guitarra CHARVEL ??? Porque vocês não mostram ??? 😅😅😅😅😅😅
The real choice is here : neck profile, ss frets or not, esthetic, pickups configuration.
can you guys do ibanez az24 vs charvel dk24pt dual humbuckers
Subscribed immediately, awesome
Well done guys!!!
I have the Ice Blue HSS AZ Prestige, not a fan of the Hyperion... It can't do metal chugs, it's muddy and mushy.. Wished it was a medium output Dimarzio instead, w/c can do a bit of everything
If only the Charvel would come with SS frets, I'd get one. But AZ takes the win here.
I never had problems with Nickel frets and the Charvel fretboard is better than the (good one) of the AZ Ibanez, that matters more, imho.
@@M4NAH1MEK0 not to mention the charvel neck smells like maple syrup. cant beat that ibanez

i was too, ive had both. charvel for a year and sold it. ibanez plays soooo good. stainless steel frets are amazing too, just to take into consideration
I considered both and got the Charvel - no regrets.
Do Charvel necks have the same feel as Fender?
not at all
The DK has more of a sound unique to itself while the AZ sounds really close to a Strat. Two great guitars that are pretty different from
each other.
What od did you use for this test?
Ibanez seems to get a Hendrix sound 🤘
I just figured out who recorded the guitar for the intro to the Guitar Nerds Podcast! 😂🎸
I like to charvel I wish they could have did a better job paint job . But no biggie going to repaint my charvel. However the neck or are well made very easy to set up also. Say in tune. And the radius on the charvel couldn't. Get any better.
@@lpacheco690 This is your *edited* version of this comment..?? I'd hate to have seen it before! 🙄
To me the Ibanez sounds better but the charvels definitely look better :p
i want to say something important. sooo ive had a dk24 for a year and im selling it. i bought an ibanez premium and man let me tell you. stainless steel frets. the thing plays like butter, pickups sound realllyy good. also the neck is thicker, charvel has a paper thin neck which i loved at first but the ibanez neck just feel really good. its comfortable to hold and play and feels like your holding something. also the trem bar is not screw in you just clip in and holds and move it freely. love the charvel but i couldnt play it anymore after playing the ibanez for 3 months now
Charvel all day
These opposing comments say one thing - you have to pay them both and everyone’s hands are unique.
What did you go for? I'm leaning Charvel.
Fan of Ibanez guitars, but I'd say that at a full $300 less, the Charvel is worth a serious look, especially for fans of their necks and the HSH configuration. Cool video.
i dont know i'll pay the extra for Stainless Steel frets on the ibanez - well worth it.. the charvels come with nickle
I would definitely pay the 300$ for the better finishes, stainless steel frets, twice the amount of tonal options and the fact my idols play then lol
Anything from Ibanez is quality, specialy when you enter Prestige level and you can compare 1800 euros Japan made guitars with 3000 euros US made guitars. I prefer the neck on Ibanez, best i ever played, my hands are tiny, so it helps a lot.

Good to see Joss back in Gak!
Dominick Ortega awesome feedback! How would you compare the Charvel neck over the ibanez RG neck?
legatoTRAIL the charvels necks is slightly thicker than the rgs but very comparable. If you’re accustomed to the rg neck the charvels neck will feel familiar.
@@dominickortega8489 Hey another question about necks haha, how close the az neck felt to a fender modern C? and the same question about the charvel to a modern C?, i had wizard RG necks and felt too thin for me, now i got a strat and like it a lot more, but i could handle a little thiner too
Kai Marte
Ok, the Ibanez az is very comparable to a fender modern C.
Kai Marte
The charvels necks is slightly thicker than the wizard but still substantially thinner than the modern c.
Give an opinion guys, it won't kill ya!!!
Az for me! Played both recently and charvel felt cheaper to me in the details, not as versatile, for my hands also loved the az neck, charvel too wide and almost hurt my hand to play it. That said charvel sounded great, would be better for more aggressive tones but less versatility

Did y’all hear how out tune the Charvel was?? AZ stayed in tune a lot better than the Charvel. Hands down Ibanez AZ for me🤘🤘
Tuning is the single most important feature, imo. And it's always overlooked. Do these Charvels have a rep for having difficult tuning? Or are you just saying the AZ is marginally better?
Also,. If you have one...care to weigh in on ppl saying the AZ has almost a baseball fat neck (And not in a good way)?
Im not sure it was in tune to begin with lol
The charvel goes out of tune after he utilizes the tremolo
AZ kills the Charvel for tone...
mick Sure. If you like blurry sound when you play with a lot of overdrive. Personally, I like the articulation of the Charvel.
