- American television sitcom ALF aired on NBC for four seasons from September 22, 1986, to March 24, 1990. The plot centers on, an alien from the planet Melmac, who follows an amateur radio signal to Earth and crash-lands into the garage of the Tanners, a suburban middle-class family who live in the San Fernando Valley area of California.
The family consists of Willie, played by Max Wright, a social worker and radio enthusiast who is responsible for the shortwave radio signals that Alf followed ultimately leading him to crash into his house, his wife Kate, played by Anne Schedeen, their teenage daughter Lynn, played by Andrea Elson, younger son Brian, played by Benji Gregory, and pet cat Lucky, who Alf consistently attempts to catch and eat.

'ALF' straddled the line between two extremes of 1980s television. On one hand, it had the wholesome family viewing appeal of 'Growing Pains,' while on the other, it had some of snark and biting wit reminiscent of 'Married With Children.'
Also a tiny bit of X Files / Eerie Indiana sci-fi.
Great show. Loved ALF as a kid. He was hilarious.
R.I.P Max Wright & Benji Gregory
Loved it too, especially in the 90s.
I literally just read about Beji's death. Such a sad story. 😪
I used to watch ALF when I was a little kid. This brings back memories.😂😂
👍🏿I watched a little bit i the early 90s.
I discovered the movie when I was 7 and love the simple sarcasm like Bart simpson, who idolized at the time. I wanted to grow up to be like arnold while currently being like Bart. Simple times. I was disappointed when I found out their was a show that I couldn't watch.
Too bad Gregory isn't around anymore
The 80s had the BEST TV shows!
Loved the show when I was a kid, even had the talking stuffed ALF toy my dad brought me for my 8th birthday. So sad that the guy who played the son recently passed away last month.
That's so cool you still have the Alf doll from your bday
@@RoseanneSeason7 "even had the talking stuffed ALF"
I used to love this show! I even had an ALF lunch tray. Rest in peace Max Wright and Benji Gregory-my fellow May 26er ♊-who've fallen. 😔🙏🏾❤️🕊️
Used too?? So you don't now?
Am I the only one who thinks a streaming service should exist for old tv shows from the 70s 80s and 90s? I can’t be the only one. I’d love to rewatch In Living Color.
Why can't you?
No, you're not special at all. It's called RUclips. It streams everything you could imagine, with your small brain.
If you buy a Samsung tv, it comes with TV plus. It’s free and has a ton of eighties nineties stuff
They actually do but they're kind of separated within all the streaming services.
Jim Henson is the best no can beat him
Willy was the real star of the show. Alf needed that straight man to play off of to be funny, and Max’s real hatred of the show made it that much more authentic
I just noticed him in 'The Great Train Robbery' from '78 last night, and god did he overact terribly in everything he did. It worked on the sitcom but he's one of those guys who could do certain things really well but had these grandiose expectations of playing Julius Caesar or something when his acting skills were really best for sitcoms or other ludicrous over-the-top stuff. He needed an obnoxious puppet nearby to temper his ludicrous intensity and tendency to overact really badly.
@@jamescarter3196 the only thing I've seen him in besides ALF is a few appearances on WKRP
Yo Willy!
@@ianfeuerhake1859 He was also in the 1994 version of The Stand

No one wanted to play 2nd fiddle to a puppet… are their egos that fragile? Be happy you’re working on a successful show… when show’s done, then you can find a better role.
That was the statement of one single actor. The truth is always grey. They reduced their screen time especially for Willy significantly. They didn't want to fiddle their thumbs, so to speak.
Rip Greg and his dog
I use to get tortured by my grandmother. She used to chase me around with that stuffed animal when I was like two and I was terrified. It’s a very traumatic memory for me.
I've had something similar happen to me! My great-cousin would take her mf false teeth out and scare me so bad I'd hyperventilate 😩.... To this day, false teeth scare me!
I was scared of Alf too when I was younger
Well she's dead now. So u won
@Catsaresupreme, wow, that's really messed up that she did that to you!! Me? I had a stuffed ALF doll too, but loved it. Though, the actual puppet creeped me right the fuck out, as a toddler!!
@@lolafairchild88 omg my grandmother use to do that to me as well and right before she use to traumatize me with the Alf doll 😫 our parents wonder why we need therapy now.
When I got my first car in 1989, the first accessory I bought for it was an ALF sunshade. Loved the show.
I still have one of those sun shades that used to be on my parents' car, but unfortunately it is broken and doesn't roll up anymore, but I kept it anyway.
Time just falls off the calendar doesn’t it?
It goes faster and faster.

I reminisce with my dad about Alf. He wasn’t a fan of the script or the character. basically he told me “Your mother let you watch that sh-“.

N@@copperblaze22 the phrase "selling booty for rock" shouldn't be as funny as it is 😂😢
They kept it rated G about the guy who voiced Alf too. That guy was a drunken racist. That's the real reason the show got cancelled. Someone leaked footage of the guy voicing Alf in-between shoots going on drunken racist rants though the actual puppet. It was crazy to see Alf the puppet just cursing and going ham in-between shoots.
That’s the good thing about life before social media. We just enjoyed the show and didn’t have to know about the behind-the-scenes drama.🎭
Tabloid existed then and could've gotten a hold on the drama and spread the news
@@QueenImagoDei, tell me about it!! Yeah, tabloid existed, but if you didn't read the tabloids, you wouldn't know about the behind the scenes drama. Whereas, nowadays, with social media, there's no way you can escape hearing about behind the scenes drama & dirty little secrets of cast members, that I'd prefer not to know about.
Tabloids...oh nevermind
@@Jaheartsjonas We read them, but we knew 99% of the content was fake gossiping.
I mean, we all clicked on a video titled “The DARK history…” for me, they preyed on my concern, but no one forced me to watch this. Alf was a show I tried to watch as a kid when it was in reruns and my mom turned it off and wouldn’t let me. Now I get it because this feels like it’s wasting my time. Although the reporter seems good, too bad it’s about a TV puppet and not an exposing of the puppet’s running the country and our lives into the ground.
"He's back in POG form!".... I'm old.
I remember when Milhouse said it on the Simpsons…cause I’m old too 😂😂😂
The more expensive collectors editions of the Shout Factory DVD sets actually came with a set of ALF "Milk Caps" ("POG" is trademarked, apparently) that look very similar to the ones seen on The Simpsons.
“You traded my soul for _POGS!?_ NOOOOO!”
Alf was one of my favorite sitcom’s growing up.
I loved Alf. I went as Alf when I was three or four. Remember picking it out. That was my show.
Michu Meszaros, the actor who played in the full-body ALF costume, has also died, back in 2016.
Max Wright being classically trained and hating the sitcom he was on reminds me of Robert Reed and how he felt about the Brady Bunch.
The actors didn't like playing second fiddle to a puppet didn't they realize that when they signed on? they could have always turned the role down
They dumbed down their role in 4th season.
As a actor it's hard to get roles. You'll take anything if it produces a paycheck. JS
Yeah, I mean the show is called ALF, not The Tanners. They should have known that the puppet was the star of the show. Alf was the best part of the show by far. The rest of the cast were boring.
Fun fact. I loved the show Alf until I was terrified of him. 😂 I'll be liking this video from a far 😂
Hahaha 😭 lol 🫢 Oh‼️
LMAO, glad to see I wasn't the only one who found ALF to be creepy! I still loved the series, though, & still do till this day!
I can imagine how difficult it was to do this show. Usually, sitcoms are fast-paced, which is why this show frustrated the actors. TY for sharing this video. God Bless You & stay safe.
Sounds like Max was a bit of a grown baby.
@@TornSparrow1974 Yeah, definitely nothing like Willie Tanner, in reality!
@mickdodge9778 Reminds me of Robert Reed who had a similar personality.
You might have to look up who that was. 😉
@@BunnEFartz Dude come on, don't play the 'you youngsters' game about something as common as the frigging Brady bunch when we're on a page about something else which is almost that old too. People know who Robert Reed is, especially in an audience who's watching videos about classic TV already.
Took himself way to seriously . He couldn't understand nobody cared he was classically trained . But people loved him as willie . But He was a drug addict so who knows right .
Sounds like some serious first world problems from Max. "Boo hoo, I get rich talking to a puppet!" I suppose all that money he made went up his nose, though. He was also on the first season of Friends as Phoebe's boss, but he was fired.

Wow. My mood exactly. Anyway, I liked the show. Whenever I heard the theme song play on TV, I’d run to it with my stuffed Alf. Don’t know where that toy is now. 😂😂
Also, rest in peace to Michu Meszaros, Max Wright and Benji Gregory. ❤
I caught this show on TV recently when I was flicking through stations and I thought he was adorable. I have his action figure on my shelf❤
This show scared me when I was younger.. lol.
@nicolesherman8974, me too, lol, but I still tuned in religiously, every week, LMAO!
I'll watch ALF reruns over any garbage produced today. I don't recall seeing Max in anything else afterwards. He sounds like a real piece of work. That's not a complement.
I don't think he ever had a role as prominent as he did in ALF ever again.
I never watched it, but I heard he had a recurring role on Friends. I think that might be the most famous post-ALF role he ever had.
I looked on IMDB and he's was in three projects with Norm MacDonald, one failed sitcom, a single episode of another failed sitcom, and some kind of TV special I'd never heard of.
He was also in the movie The Shadow, which starred Alec Baldwin. (As bad as Max Wright was, at least he never shot and killed anyone on a movie set!)
Rest in peace Max and Benji and his dog😢😢...and both Luckys.
I loved this show
The daughter was actually pretty hot 👍🏼
girl-next-door sexy...
I agree
Lynn was my elementary crush lol
Rest in peace Max, Benji, his dog and both Luckys.😢😢
I was a child of the '80s, in grade school during those times ALF was on. It was one of my favorite TV shows back then. I never knew/heard of any of the issues that occurred with producing the show until seeing this video, but my appreciation goes out to the cast and crew for putting up with it for four years. It made me happy watching the show!
I remember this show and it was extremely weird now that I think back on it !

Loved this show as a kid. The merchandising for this show was massive! I remember when a 3rd grade classmate brought an ALF plush to school we were all in awe of it.
"Before you get up for that final snack, I want you to know, I've got your cat! HA!"😂

I saw four months old when this show premiered and yet it’s a part of my childhood.
I watched this show all the time in the mid 90s.
I remember those days. ALF was everywhere, then he was gone.

Awesome video. I love Alf. ❤️
I used to have a lifesize Alf doll. 'Lost' it at a cousins house.

My bf’s mom passed last year and we were cleaning out the house and I found an Alf stuffed animal. I was like OMG LOOK!!! 👀 He let me keep it cause he was gonna toss it…. I’m literally looking at it now… I LOVED this show growing up.
I was today’s years old when I learned that Alf and myself have the same birthday ❤
I know max wright hated it but he was great on the show. Paul fusco deserves alot of credit, the voice and character is great. Had to be extremely hard to do. The show makes me feel like a kid again and I still love it.
NBC Was Popping In The 80’s. Honestly I Thought ALF Was Cool 😎 I Never Had The Doll or Anything Like That. My Friends Did Though.
Random question, but isn't it easier to type like this instead of Typing Like This? The first letter of every word in a sentence doesn't need to be capitalized
My sister had the stuffed battery powered talking Alf.
I was gifted an Alf doll by someone in the late 1980s. And it turned out that I was dead scared of him. My parents had to hide him in a closet.
I was a huge ALF fan as a kid. I remember having an ALF sleeping bag lol. I do remember crying at the finale. Just felt so abrupt to end it
Alf was one of my favorites as a kid so thank you for posting this video.
I was born in 84’
I grew up with Tom and Jerry, ALF and later on Friends. I still have them! There aren’t a lot other series that compare to what these have provided!
Its amazing and disturbing how difficult it is to make a tv show. The similar cleche "everyone loves eating a hotdog but never would they want see it be made"
RIP Benji Gregory and Max Wright.
I was 6 when ALF came out I loved it! I got an ALF toy for my birthday Which had him sitting in a little ALF spaceship packaging ( I think I kept the box for about a week) and I had an Alf sweat shirt.
I LOVED THIS SHOW AS A KID IT WAS HILARIOUS MAN I MISS THE 80S I WAS FIVE OR SIX WHEN THIS SHOW CAME ON ME AND MY FAMILY WERE LIVING IN BROOKSVILLE FL. DAMN GOOD TIMES THANKS ALF FOR THE MEMORIES
Loved this show. I still have my Alf somewhere I’ll have to locate him.
I could never get into this show and always wondered why it was so highly praised. I think it’s cause it wasn’t a lot of competition out there when it came to shows at this time.
I agree. My friends and classmates loved it. I only watched it in spurts bc I didn’t want to be left out. But I never understood why it was so adored.
@@MrWendell29 ok thank you. Thought I was crazy for never being able toget into it lol
In my somber childhood, I remember my parents yelling from the living room that the new episode of ALF was coming on. I loved that show. Instead I played with my little toy barn and animals...
I used to love ALF as a kid. Such happy memories.
I used to watch this show when I was a kid, and still watch it on roku. Still love the show
Omg this video unlocked my fear of Alf as a child. Especially everytime you flashed that stillshot of Alf with the blue background. It's those creepy a$$ eyes lol
My ex-wife said I had creepy &&& eyes too. LOL. I didn't think so tho.
@noelle1248217, you're not alone. ALF terrified me, as a small child, too, yet I was still obsessed with the show & puppet!! Lol!! Nowadays, though, he doesn't bother me so much, I just enjoy the show, but I will say I still think he's freaky looking.
The first time I heard about the dad being a ‘prima Donna’ for want of a better term I thought… ‘why mess with a good thing’.
Given he was a classically trained actor; I can appreciate how tedious it would have been for him and the diminishing returns it would have constituted.
Alec Guiness was not really pleased to be in Star Wars either but he knew when to keep it to himself.
No mention of his love of cats😂😂
I just started watching this series this week. I'm on Episode 3 season 1. There is also a story that Max Wright got so upset withthe the puppet one day that he grabbed it and began to beat it up. Sad to hear about those have passed on.
Yes!!! Thank you for finally doing alf. I must say, alf had another show called 'Alf loves mysteries'
My dad was in construction. His hands were all torn up from work, his back hurt all the time, and he never called out sick so we'd have food on the table. So I certainly don't wanna' hear any whiny shit from a bunch of overpaid actors. FU. (Ironically, ALF was one of his favorite shows. Imagine that!).
I bet your dad didn't get royalties every time somebody used the building, either.
I’m going to have to binge watch because tv shows don’t affect me but I HAVE to know
Man I feel old this show aired a month before I was born and ended when I was 4.
I love ALF it was a really funny show. I remember being jealous of my mate who had an ALF cuddle toy. Sad to hear about the death of both the actors.
Not only did ALF take 20 to 25 hours to shoot there was no studio audience despite hearing a laugh track LOL!
I feel the issues with the show, the frustrations of the show, was on purpose, the issues everyone had with ALF was the point of the show. THAT WAS THE SHOW... they were the puppets. ALF was the alien whose perspective was the view, where everyone is reacting to this crazy alien trying to figure out this planet's life.
This show is absolutely amazing. The actions of the dad, really pressed his professionalism, NO OTHER ACTOR could have done such a good job. Max Wright is one of the reasons that ALF does such a good job. I've upscaled this entire episode set to 1080p using Topaz Video AI, and watch the series and movie set from time to time. It holds a special memory of watching it with friends because few understood that the show, was from ALF's perspective.
I could watch these videos 24/7 if i could lol! Crazy how many programmes growing up you forgot about! So much nostalgia ❤
Both of the Ochmoneks who were neighbors of the Tanners died too.
Is there any chance you can do Too Close For Comfort?
@Supremmo Funny that you mentioned Too close For Comfort because Jim J Bullock was actually on ALF LOL!
Paul Fusco seems like a hassle to work with. It’s a shame because the character of Alf is so much fun to watch.
The movie _Permanent Midnight_ is a fascinating look into the creator of this show. It’s wild to me that the guy who produced this goofy show had a life seen in _Trainspotting_ 😮
Yeah, & crazy thing is when I watched Permanent Midnight, I had no idea that it had any connection to ALF, & that Mr. Chompers was a stand in for ALF, in the movie!!
I can't believe they didn't mention Jerry Stahl in this video. Permanent Midnight was so good. One of Ben Stiller's best roles IMO
I loved this show when I was a kid.
My aunt loved alf he was so funny 😅
I enjoyed watching Alf and Alf Tales, and had an Alf story book. But I was scared of a poster of Alf because a classmate told me it would move if I watched it. 😂
Loved ALF when I was a kid. I own the complete series on dvd and have a black and white poster titled "ALFacino "Furface" (Al Pacino "Scarface" parody with a bunch of bad Cat related puns all over the poster with ALF wearing a suit in the middle).
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the video game. 😊
I got my first computer when I was 3 in 1986. It was a Commodore 64 and I loved that thing. I loved watching Alf (I estimate around the time I was 7 or 8?)… and there was an Alf game that I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid. I haven’t thought of that in years! I also played Paperboy, Backgammon and this winter sports game a lot. I must have had about 10-15 different games that I loved, though. Anyway, Alf was one of them! I guess that’s my fun fact addition.
Thanks for this video. It randomly popped up on my feed and I had to click. Peace to you! ❤
Was a big fan of ALF, had a speaking plush toy (How about a hug for the old ALFer?). Got a record once from a cereal box, can't remember what was on it. Even had some trading cards. Never seen Project: ALF, but plan to do so at some point. *FUN FACT: ALF's real name is Gordon Shumway.*
He came back briefly during the ‘90s…in POG form.
I loved this show as a kid in the 80s. There was even a video rental store called Melmac Video in my town.
It was my favorite show. I was 7-10 when it ran.
Would’ve been same
Remember ALF? He's back. In Pog form.
I remember a series of licensed Alf plush released at Pizza Hut! I had the Rock Star Alf 😃👍
All of the "dark secrets" could be said of any tv show. When you pack a bunch of people in a small space for hours and hours things will get heated. Frustration, anger are all a part of the business. Some adults can't work with kids. It happens. Some shows' actors have a great working chemistry and the show sucks. Some shows have everybody hating each other and it just works. In any case, to those of us who watched, our memories are of the finished product. I was 13 when this show started. Amazing.
My grandson can't watch it as soon as he found out ALF eats cats 😂
I met Alf at a car show in Baltimore 90 or 91 I was so convinced he was real it had to have been that circus performer guy in the costume on stage being a smartass everybody who walked up there I'll never forget it
Loved and will always love Alf!
