    Judy Winslow is almost a direct result of the Chuck Cunningham syndrome. "Family Matters" had a lot of the same producers of "Happy Days" and it almost followed as many tropes as that show had, right down to the "unintentional main character syndrome" as I call it. The Fonz, Steve Urkel... characters that were introduced as wacky side characters but ended up overtaking the show.

      Very true. Chuck was never a main character and was mostly there to add flavor to the show, not be a plot driver. Judy in season 1 of FM was a main character who wasn't replaced by Steve, but Little Richie. No real need for another young child. Funny enough Rachel ends up leaving because the show becomes less about the adults and more about Steve.

      Objectively, adding a kid because you're running out of ideas.
      That actor isn't going to have a good time because he'll never fit in.
      Getting rid of a character at least frees up the actor to work on other projects where they could potentially make more money. This exact thing happened to Matt LeBlanc in the 90s with Married with Children and his failed spin-off, which ultimately allowed him to end up on a little show called "Friends."
      It also reduces narrative bloat and allows the writers to focus on what they have.

    When you mentioned Jesse's stepbrother on Saved by the bell, I was hoping you were going to also address Tori's abrupt disappearance as well

    • @drunclecookie216
      @drunclecookie216 2 месяца назад +18

      I believe the episodes with Tori were actually filmed last. Season 4 was already done filming but the network ordered 10 additional episodes. There was some issue with Tiffany Thiessan and Elizabeth Berkleys contracts which why they weren't in those episodes and were replaced by Tori instead. The Tori episodes were just placed in the middle of season 4 as filler.

    • @DapperManDan
      @DapperManDan 2 месяца назад +12

      @@drunclecookie216 Correct! In fact the Tori episodes never explain what happened to Jessie and Kelly either. In the short lived, but very good Saved by the Bell "requel" series on Peacock, there is a scene during Season 2 where Zack talks about Tori to Kelly and Kelly asks who Tori is and Zack is surprised Kelly doesn't remember her.

    • @GrimmShadowsII
      @GrimmShadowsII 2 месяца назад +1

      @drunclecookie216 I heard Tiffani was hard to work with and they didn't want to bring her back. I never heard anything about why they didn't bring Elizabeth back, don't think she showed up again until the most recent spin off, I think she was in the episode where they discussed memories of Screech, so I guess she didn't want to come back.

    • @DapperManDan
      @DapperManDan 2 месяца назад +5

      @GrimmShadowsII No, NBC ordered 10 more episodes after the initial episodes were filmed for the final season. Tiffani and Elizabeth both had other projects starting and their contracts were finished, so they couldn't come back due to scheduling. Tiffani ended up coming back for Saved by the Bell the College Years after the pilot was filmed. When that was canceled most of the cast reunited for the Wedding in Vegas tv movie... with Elizabeth making a cameo at the end with Belding and Mike (from College Years) during the wedding scene.
      Elizabeth and Mario Lopez were both in thethe "requel" Series as regulars... Mark-Paul and Tiffani made a few appearances during season 1 and then in season 2 they were basically regulars, Lark showed up in episode where they remembered Screech and prior to that on a Zoom style call.

    • @GrimmShadowsII
      @GrimmShadowsII 2 месяца назад +3

      @@DapperManDan I never watched the "requel" series so I didn't know everyone who was on the show and it's been years since I've seen wedding in Vegas so I don't remember it too well. "The Torkelsons" ran in 1991-92 and was about a single mother and her brood of kids. Retooled in 1993 under the name "Almost Home", it featured a thinned out family. Gone were Aaron Metchick as Steven Floyd Torkelson and Anna Slotky as Ruth Ann Torkeson. No explanation was given for their disappearance.

Also, in the first couple of years on the show, Paul is said to have two sisters, with his older sister "Sharon" making one appearance in season 2, and then, she's never seen again, and barely mentioned (she may not be mentioned at all). I suppose the disappearance of Chuck Cunningham in _Happy Days_ is the most known case of a TV character dropped with no explaination of why they went missing, never to be heard from again (hence the "Chuck Cunningham Syndrome").
    However, it did happen prior to Chuck vanishing. One example that comes to mind is Jemima Boone (Veronica Cartwright) in the 1960s TV series _Daniel Boone._ She was the older sister to her brother Israel Boone (Darby Hinton) and disappeared after season two.

    Other disappearing characters on Saved by the Bell included Tori and Max. Tori replaced Jessie and Kelly in the final season, then she disappeared midway through without explanation, and Jessie and Kelly reappeared as if they never left. Max was the owner of The Max (hence the name), and he was played by magician and comedian Ed Alonzo. He’d do magic tricks for the kids when he brought over their food. I think he was only on the first season, then he disappeared.
    There’s also Sarah, Tamera’s best friend in the first two seasons of Sister Sister played by Brittany Murphy. She disappeared without explanation. Thinking about it, so did Roger, and that was more surprising as he was part of the main cast. They brought him back as a guest in a couple of later episodes, but they never explained why he disappeared in the first place. It was likely because Marques Houston was busy with his music career, plus Tia and Tamera had boyfriends and went to college, so they probably didn’t know what to do with Roger’s character.
    The other disappearing character that comes to mind is Oliver from The Golden Palace (the spin-off/sequel to The Golden Girls). He was the foster child of Don Cheadle’s character, and he disappeared for a few episodes midway through the series. They eventually brought him back for one episode, and wrote in a storyline where his mom got clean and he went to live with her, but they never explained his previous disappearance. I’m wondering if the episodes aired in a different order to how they were filmed.

    This is probably unrelated but there was a VERY dramatic Family Matters episode where an older man came claiming he was Harriet and Rachel's father. Harriet had a hard time accepting his apology but ultimately did and comsidering how serious it was, youd think you'd see him more. But no, he was never spoken of again. I dunno maybe he was a jerk and left the family again and it was all taken care of during the Winslow's "off-camera" lives. 😂🤣

    i'm guessing this video was recommended to me because i watched a flashback video by another channel. i'm not that big into watching every pop culture look back at this, that and the other thing, but this one was mildly interesting, so i checked it out. i can't say how good or bad your research is, but clearly you did some homework in compiling this. and your end product was superior to a couple of videos i sampled from another nostalgia channel. well done.

    • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 15 дней назад

      Yes!!!! The original idea for the Show was for Cory to have two best friends, so in season one, there were a bunch of different actors who played a friend of Cory and Shawn's, but none of them stuck. That's part of the reason Shawn has a sister in season one. Apparently when filming that episode "Cory's alternative friends" where the sister is mentioned, there was another kid in that episode that they fired halfway through filming, and they just gave all his lines to Shawn...The shownrunners eventually just decided to have Cory and Shawn be the best friend duo.

    I got one for it's not a 90s show though. Vint Harper's kids on Mama's Family in the first 2 seasons the show's cast was Vint his new wife Naomi his kids Buzz and Sonja moving in with Vint's mother Thelma and her sister Frances Crawley (played by Rue McClanahan) also on the show is Thelma's daughters Eunice ( Carol Burnette) and Ellen (Betty White) who had recurring roles. The show was canceled after season 2 and was brought back two years later in syndication returning most of the cast. Except Eunice and her husband ED (due to Carol Burnette's divorce from the show runner) which was explained but the characters moving to Florida. Frances Crawley did not return (due to Rue McClanahan not wanting to play the character any longer also probably because she was starring as Blanche Deveraux unlike Betty White's Ellen Fran was a central figure and would have made it hard to shoot both shows) Fran was explaned to have past away choking to death on a toothpick her funeral is the first episode of season 3. FInally Buzz and Sonja do not return and they never say where or why they were gone. The show brought in a new grandchild Bubba Higgins Ed & Eunice's son who just got out of reform school and is on probation and unable to move to Florida and neighbor Iola Boyle who is a former school mate of Vint's and longtime neighbor who is also Thelma's best friend. Although originally Naomi Oats owned the house next door before selling it and marrying Vint and another neighbor on the other side is seen and explained to have been a longtime neighbor having been in an on going feud with Thelma since before her husband past away. I am not sure then how Iola grew up next door to the Harpers. Still the biggest mystery for me is what happened to Buzz and Sonja? My next question is what happened to the house originally the house had bedrooms for Thelma, Fran & Sonja as well as an attic room for Buzz and Vint and Naomi were in the Basement. When the show is brought back only Thelma and Bubba have bedrooms with Vint in Naomi in the basement which Naomi hated and often complained about. What happened to the other bedroom and the attic bedroom?

    I read an interview a long time ago with Michelle Beaudoin, who played Jennie on Sabrina, where she said that the reason her character was cut was because "they were looking for a more ethnic friend for Sabrina," as she was told. She then sarcastically alludes to the fact that Sabrina's next friend, Valerie, was white.
    Funny enough, a few years ago, Melissa Joan Hart said on her podcast that one of the reasons she herself had a hard time finding work after Sabrina was that "they were always looking for someone more ethnic."
