4:08 Nothing good is being pushed anymore
4:46 Starts to seem like a game of mortality

    6:13 Feeling incapable to care
    6:33 Others feeling the same
6:43 Shocked in where we are

It's 100% why I deleted my Twitter account - It's toxic and 2 and a half years ago I cut it off and I'm glad I did
You are on the money with the pressure to "Do your part" - Twitter is both the driving force for people to do that, and the way to pretend your making a difference to the world
The reason you have the moral imperative is you will have had one or 2 things you actually cared enough about to call out: but twitter has a culture "If you did it for X why would you not do it for Y" and the answer of Because I don't actually care about that specific issue feels like a moral failing on our own part
      There is an old quote
"It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
We have allowed ourselves to become the moral busybodies, and the conscience doesn't just approve - it INSISTS

Your feeling of numbness is a genuine phenomenon that people are taught about in media degrees called "compassion fatigue." Having constant demands made upon your compassion and empathy is too much for any person to bear, let alone at the scale facilitated by the Internet. No one is in the wrong for disengaging, it's just a shame that people are forced to that point every day.

Honestly this is why I kinda been using the internet less and less. I'm so sick and tired of my life being filled with constant hate, drama, exposing and all this pointless petty stuff. I just want to be free for once, I want to be happy. That's the entire reason why I came to the internet in the first place. I'm purposely choosing not to involve in drama anymore. I am playing video games, watching animations, anime, movies, talking with online friends and doing hobbies now. Thats all I am focusing on because the internet is too much for my sensitive heart to handle.

Thanks for talking about this. I feel like it's really been hitting me lately that the algorithms are aiming towards controversy and negativity. And I try my best to carve out my own space in it, but sometimes I worry that the old internet might become lost to greed. I miss when people could talk like humans and do cool things together! When it wasn't about "networking" and "clout chasing" and "here's today's drama!".
Maybe it is a cycle thing after all. I felt this way in 2016 when drama was big that year too. Call it naive, but I don't want to give up on the hope of things getting better. Maybe not amazing, but at least okay.

I have had to take breaks (except for very specific needs) from certain content or news for periods that sometimes have spanned several months, purely because of how they were negatively impacting me. I became more selective with my level of engagement and research.

I've felt this big time. And oh boy, the constant morality checking(and even people getting annoyed that someone's not up to date with it which my brain registers wrongly as me being a bad person and thus, entirely dismissed) back and forth rather than being able to converse with people normally... I'm even unintentionally doing what I think to be a version of it right now as I type here about this topic, expecting someone to respond in kind! And perhaps confirm my suspicions... lest I get annoyed that someone's not up to date, so I obsessively compulsively try to get them up to date to save them from potential exclusion and ostracism from other people... with me being too scared to actually ostracize or exclude myself cause that's what bad people do. But I think my definitions of the two terms are a little faulty, when not looking at and not talking to people even when I don't know them and they're just strangers on the bus is something my brain considers excluding and ostracizing people

It's hard to see social media without a system that doesn't inherently push controversy. If there's something I've learned about the internet, you just can't take anything seriously on here. I look at some of my friends and they generally just avoid saying anything publicly like 99% of the time or just vent in private. This isn't to say speaking on what is right is not necessary. But there has definitely been a loss of priorities on what is important to address or not.
I can only hope it doesn't continue to get more sensational as the years go by.

This isn't necessarily a new thing, but it's certainly a LOT more prevalent than it used to be. Scandal sells, and it has always sold (which is why gossip columns existed in the earliest days of print journalism, gossip radio shows existed, talk shows on TV went viral, etc -- heck, there is ancient graffiti in Pompeii that puts people on blast).
The difference now is that it has changed in the last 5-10 years from having some good to virtually no good stuff; it's pretty much all drama. I see it in vtubing for sure (in fact, that's pretty much all I see in vtwitter), but it expands across all forms of content. Heck, one of the sites I used to watch for Disney news is all clickbait titles now - and yes, people are definitely reading stuff like "(theme park) ride closed forever" more than "(theme park) ride temporarily closed for renovation, reopens (date)". It fuels a sense of urgency or plays into our fears of loss, destruction, etc - you "have" to read that stuff, even when you know for sure it's just more clickbait. (Well, not me + that specific site anymore, I refuse to open a single piece of their content now because it's all garbage and most of it isn't true.)
There's an old saying about how nobody takes their eyes off the trainwreck... and sadly, it's true. But when you do stop watching the trainwreck, you can focus on more important things, and I think you're right, it's perfectly healthy to disconnect and step away instead of doomscrolling for more horrible stuff that screws with our mental health.

I am glad to know i am not the only one who's tired all the time even after work doesn't help my irl job being a nurse is super stressful most of the time. I think we're going to see a part of the Internet get bigger of people who just want a couple of hours of fun and want to just chill/have fun after a long day. I also think we need to stop trying to punish people who haven't or don't want to make a statement on every issue no matter how serious or small it maybe.

Funny enough, I was thinking about this recently. And frankly, I'm not even surprised this is all happening. I remember back in 2018 or 2019, I mentioned on a different social media platform that things were going to get worse (and I tried mixing it with something positive), and one person thought I was only being negative or nihilistic but I was only picking up on patterns of what's going on; being realistic about it. I'm seeing that I was right, after all these years since then (not just online but in the real world too). I can relate to you when you mentioned you grew numb and stopped caring. I'm at the point myself. You just get exhausted from all the noise after a while.

12:17 i agree so much. Because most of these vtuber news channels simply do not have to abide by any integrity a real journalist or a news anchor has to. They are essentially drama channels! If there's important or positive news or a tech advancement relevant to the niche, it will get ignored for whatever will keep them relevant or make them money! It's so frustrating because in this space the numbers can and do usually dictate who people take seriously when if you look closely, that person may be anything but a grifter or releasing misinformation. I don't think they are the "source" of why things have become so sour in the scene, but I do think the space would be better with either them gone or shifting to giving legitimate news or interviews, especials or even documentaries, not simply showing us twitter screenshots and their unprofesional opinions....

TLDR: Good video, interesting subject; I just want to add my opinion to it. Drama is part of our lives; we need to not be interested in all of them and look somewhere else sometime. Social media are bad for this. Handpick the drama you want to be invested in and do your best to ignore the rest, but I understand for content creators it's harder to do so. Taking a break is healthy, and being "selfish" is important to do it sometime.
Drama is always part of life, but nowadays, with the internet, we are exposed to it every day. Before that, it was usually small stuff at work, drama in the family, and the big one hitting the news on TV. Today with the social media, it's like a giant office 24/7 where pointless drama never ends with the sheer amount of people.
Except RUclips, I do my best to avoid any social media. I do know what's going on with the news channel, but I'm never overexposed. For content creators who are in need of those accounts to build an audience, it's harder to avoid, plus, like you said, viewers want the opinion of all creators on all drama subjects. It's impossible to care for everyone and everything; it's not in human nature to do that; it's unhealthy. It's ok to care when there is drama that touches you directly, concerns a friend, or even a content creator we like and follow, but the more we care, the more numb we grow. In the end, it became the doomscrolling phenomenon, if I recall.
Yet drama sells; look at all the TV series with drama in them to get people hooked on them. I think it's in our nature to be drawn by it, but too much of it can damage us. No wonder people can live by reporting or even making drama on the internet. I understand those who report all drama; I think it's up to the viewers to handpick the drama they deem important and want more info on. But it's hard to control this emotion and just want info and opinion on everything.
In those situations, it's important to take a break, like you said, look outside, take a walk, or do something else. Sadly, I think the FOMO started as well and to not be in touch with what's going on. But once you succeed in passing that phase, I think it's possible to find balance and inner peace.

That's all i can handle, i'm no longer on social media and haven't been for over 5 years. Been there and it's so time wasting and too much brain drain altogether. It's so hard these days to be informed and yet not dog piled by everything all at once. It certainly feels like you watch one drama video and suddenly the algorithm flood gates open. I think the only "drama" i'm invested in and have been for a long time is anything to do with nijisanji, but apart from that i really try to avoid everything else like the plague. Having been online since the beginning of the internet and social media, it's always surprising and shocking to me how bad things have gotten. Yet every year somehow manages to get worse.

Now on to the content of it! I wholeheartedly agree! I was never one to use social media because... well the internet can be a cesspool of negativity. I checked on youtube mostly for things that interested me that had no drama, like playthroughs or music or some clips from vtubers/streamers that would give me a laugh or entertain me. It’s only this month that i figured why not check twitter and... damn there hasn’t been a single day where a post on drama reached me.
Way i figured, i had two choices. Either i react to the drama or i ignored it. I have been leaning towards the latter. Only ones i react on or try to are ones where the OP in question is having a personal bad time. Everyone needs a few words of encouragement even if from a stranger.
So, maybe... one needs to regulate not just the time spent in front of a screen, but also knowing what to choose to watch while in front of the screen and when. There’s too much going on in one’s life to also having to be put down with so much... i guess hate? In the world that doesn’t directly affect you. Even if it does, taking a break and getting updated later on might be what you need to lift your spirits up

In the end, everything on RUclips competes with cat videos. That's been true since the site launched; for as much effort as we put into building up personalities and then tearing them down, documents of nature itself tend to tell more complete stories. I went through a phase of watching various great apes a few months back: they have rich inner lives, even though their verbal communication is limited. I believe the source of the pain is that we react more immediately to language, and language allows us to craft our own stories, but it tends to override nature and point us towards less truthful stories with hyped-up headlines and commentary.

I agree about 60% of what you said, the other 40%, it comes from a researcher/journalist perspective. I feel you in every way you feel about information. It has been non-stop bad news since the outbreak of Covid. We have been hit for years, of just bad news. It’s extremely hard for anyone, especially me, to attempt to be, not just stay informed, but to contain all the information I consume. The things we watch, the reading, the listening and experiencing, it’s way too much for anyone to handle…
Having said all that, it’s because people payed attention far too late. Society waited till it started to affect them, and when it reaches at that point, it’s far too late. We watched as our politics is ran by ancients who definitely saw the Roman Empire crumble, we waited till the pollution got so bad that fires are not containable and only finally waking up to green technology, waited till the trash we threw away got so bad that there are 2 plastic patches in 2 different oceans that are the size or bigger than Texas, waiting and consuming all the products we can till even the poor look like assholes for not getting at least 1 gift on Christmas whether they can afford to or not.
All the decisions that society and humanity as a whole, chose to ignore and not act, has lead us to this moment. The politically dividing, having the most powerful computer in your pocket that is stronger than the ones that sent men to the moon, to not research, play candy crush, or to just hate on the other for having different, jaded, skewed views where you only consume a very select view point that you let the algorithm gives you, letting ourselves become mind dead as we let others do the thinking for us, it’s all coming ahead.
I do blame our boomers and back for the suffering we have now. Because they labeled the millennials and younger as lazy and poor, nothing but complainers and uninformed, when we got very close to electing Bernie sanders and try to save the years to come. 47%, that’s how close we were. But the boomers blocked us from fixing the system twice, and actually getting change, but because we were labeled as commie socialists, we lost. Gen Z hasn’t been able to add to our fight as they are/were not old enough yet, but now it’s far too late.
I’m sorry if I add any depression, or make any of you worry, but there’s no way to sugar coat it, it’s going to get worst. We can save our selves, there is technology out there, inventions already made, that can fix our ecosystem?! I mentioned a shirt plant already where they send workers to the beaches to pick up plastic trash and make them into yarn, but there’s also a device called a Stupa, where it’s artificial ice that takes all winter to grow, then can be harvested in the summer as it melts! An india man made it for his village as they couldn’t get water. There’s an idea in California to explode the goat population as they eat dried dead brush, and their droppings would help fertilize the soil. There are ideas that we need to implement that will help drastically. We recently discovered that, at the bottom of the ocean, these combination of rocks actually produces oxygen for the ocean! There is stuff we can do to save our species and the earth. But capitalism, this idea of consistent consumption, needs to die off.
We can no longer ignore what is going on. The wars needs to stop, as when I see oil depots get destroyed, all I see is those chemicals go into the air. We need to tax and regulate the rich, as there isn’t a single reason that not everyone should have a job, both immigrants and citizens, as there is a lot of things to do. Also regulate the companies as they find loopholes in every contract and law so they can steal natural resources and pollute our waters as it’s cheaper than properly getting rid of waste.

I agree, but that wasn't necessarily what I was talking about as much with this video. Most of the drama ISN'T that stuff. Most people are STILL ignoring that, until they literally can't anymore because people are dying.
But they ARE using petty drama to fill their time as they ignore the world burning around them, and that makes us even less empathetic overall. There's only so many times I can hear someone called out as a p*do before I kinda just stop caring about that accusation anymore, which makes me sick to my stomach, yknow?

Fully understand and I can’t argue against limiting consumption.
It’s just, knowing the things that I know, has led me to see clearly, the timeline, on how we got here. I prefer that people stay informed, but be informed in a smarter way. And I mean by that is, watching people that you would probably hate to get their point of view, watch debates with their phone ready as they look up claims by both sides, pick an expert to listen to for a particular topic and not someone who summarizes 10 news articles on 10 different subjects (example, I watch Dylan Burns on his, on the ground reporting and knowledge, on Ukraine specifically, my domestic guy is Kyle kulinski, my hacking news is Mutahar, so on and so forth (and to get all point of views and see what’s being said, I got piers Morgan)). If it hurts, it's because you care. And it's good to care, even though it hurts, because it means you can be empathetic and good. Bad people don't care.
But the reality is, bad things have always happened, and more or less, they've happened at the same rate today as they did before. The difference is how fast information travels these days, and the sheer quantity of that information. In the age of the internet, we can get all worldwide information immediately. 100 years ago, you might only hear about something a week after the fact. 200 years ago, it could be months before you hear about a significant event as a synopsis from a 9th-hand source.

Not wrong, part of it is definitely just the amount of information. I think that much has definitely increased, and the only real reason I can see for that is people thinking they're morally superior and wanting to ruin other people's public platforms. That stuff is so tiring. 😔

Things seem to be getting chaotic right now, which can be scary, but it's not necessarily bad. If real life starts to mirror what's happening online, there could be some serious upheaval, and that’s where things might get messy.
Unfortunately, even though some people, like you, are noticing these issues, most others won't listen. Many are already blaming others in the comments of this video, missing the point that they too play a part.
Everyone, including you, has sometimes contributed to the problem, whether by insulting others or getting caught up in drama. There have been moments when we could have tried to understand opposing views, but instead, we've often reacted aggressively, justifying it because we feel like we're defending ourselves.
Others feel the same way about you, seeing you as the "bad guy" and making decisions based on that belief. This creates a cycle that's hard to break, as we're all convinced we're right and afraid of being victimised.
Think about it: can you imagine a situation where extreme groups like the Alt-Right and Antifa would work together to improve the world? If not, that same difficulty applies to less extreme disagreements. We don't truly know if others want to harm us, and with so much evidence of bad intentions, it's safer to assume the worst. Most people will take the safer route, and that's understandable.
As I said before, this situation is scary but not inherently bad. Our current system is too broken to fix, it needs a complete reset to start anew.

Keep in mind that I am a creator and engage with other creators because it's my job. My feed is primarily just indie pixel games, live2d rigging, and cool art, but part of that drama comes from other creators, and then part of the drama also just hits different communities. There's been drama in all of the communities i've listed this year.

People quickly get used to everything.
No politics. One vtuber girl from DNR (eastern ukraine that got bombed for 10 years) streams whenever she can. She's so tired from explosions and alarms that don't want to run in bunker. She tired to fear.
For their own safety people blocking themselves from annoying things. We're not brave, we're tired. Even kids that invest emotions the most can be sick of all this.

Unfortunately in the news world the mentality is: if it bleeds it leads. I think bad things always happened, we’re just so well connected that we learn of it way faster and it’s not healthy at all. In a way we create entertainment to escape the horrors of reality and end up consuming that same horror as content. I click on your videos cause I know it’s gonna have a positive approach to things and it’s refreshing, I appreciate it a lot.

vtuber news channels were such a bad idea, we became our own celebrities, and our own paparazzism like the EYE guy, why would we recreate some of the worst parts of stardom, also who made your model, it is quite lovely

Oh damn, the fire's near you too? Honestly, I'm not that phased by it since the Carr fire. That one was especially bad. Pack a bag, just in case.

Yuuup, we're keeping an eye on it. Hopefully it'll stay where it's at and they'll get it fully under control far before we need to worry about getting out of here. 😔
