I've been thinking of vtubing for a really, really long time. But as a guy I never felt like I will ever have enough skills to justify people wanting to watch me. Thanks for this video, I think that this is a good push for me to stop making excuses and just do it. I wish the best of luck for you, and thank you again. I hope your channel takes off farther than you ever thought possible
The thing about audience cultivation is that we are basically socially taught that small audiences are bad. The more you do, eventually you will attract like minded people. The world is vast.
Honestly, small audiences are better than large audiences imo. With small audiences you can interact with most people in your audience. With large audiences, you can't. Well, you can, it'll just take WAY too much time. Also, small audiences tend to be way less toxic. And yes, I know we're in the RUclips era of earning revenue over everything else, so obviously channel growth is incentivized, and honestly I wish we could go back to when RUclips was viewed as a hobby, and not a career path.
@@FlushDesert22 Actually I don't think a smaller audience is better. When you have a smaller audience they tend to be much more parasocial than larger ones. That's why alot of drama happens with people who have been in a streamer's audience from when they were smaller.

This was a lovely watch. The whole "don't overthink" and "just make what you like" advice has been around for as long as there have been RUclipsrs called content creators, mainly because doing what you like most is often what will allow a creator to endure the tests of time. I mean (lol) look at me, a 12 year old channel that just recently hit 1000 subscribers. Cause, yanno, videography is what I enjoy doing, so I've never felt like stopping even if I've grown slowly, while I've watched many creators struggle emotionally with slow growth. And as to doing all the traditional vtuber things... yep. Vtubing itself is a technology, it's a format rather than a niche. Most vtubers are in something like a virtual idol niche, but there's zero reason why someone using the technology should feel obligated to make content in that niche. Someone with a Live2D avatar could do video essays, or tabletop gaming reviews, or science explanations, or simple vlogging, whatever they want. Great, great advice video here. :D
This reminds me of what Mari Yume said in a vid. She was talking about her adhd affects her ability to make content. How she can find it difficult to stream and maintain that energy that would be expected of her. So she prefers to make video content that can be more controlled and she has less worry about being entertaining like she feels she needs to be on stream.
This is so incredibly relatable. I wasn't happy with my streams either, specially because I'm not a gamer or someone who enjoys games a lot by any measure. I've always been just a yapper. And one day on a whim I decided to finally make a video and for the first time in a long while I've been happy with what I've done. I enjoyed the process even though it's risky. I stopped thinking about what I "have" to do as a vtuber and what I would enjoy doing instead.
Part of it honestly comes down to what you want to do in the end. If you want to make enough money to live off of, you're going to have to appeal to some mainstream, that's the nature of business. There's always the chance though that taking the risk (like said in the video) could also make you big. Unfortunately, no matter how creative you or the "product"" is, some of it also comes down to luck if you find the right people. Think about how many artists aren't famous until hundreds of years after their deaths. But if your just doing it for fun it's a different story entirely. A good example (not making this a plug but it works) is the Let's Play channel me and some friends just started (The Good, The Bad, and The Laggy). We are just doing it so that certain games get more documentation online then they have. We aren't professionals, our mics are terrible and we have no editing skills. We don't even have a profile picture or background for our profile, but we're not doing it for views. We're doing it so that games like Dokapon Kingdom, who barely has any info online (before Connect at least), might one day get a bigger fan base or at least people can use our videos for reference in the future.
I’m not one to usually comment, but I feel obligated to tell you I binge watched all of your videos and subscribed. I’ve been wanting to find a channel like this for ages and it really satisfies my craving. It’s an amazing skill to be able to talk like this without a script and say everything so clearly. I hope I can be more like you in the future! Looking forward to more videos. 💗
I'm super invested in the way you brought up "safe content" and getting stuck going in circles with the same games etc. I personally feel that way about a lot of bigger vtubers in say Hololive, when they debut they may have a song or two, the dynamics between people are always fresh, but... it's usually the same games, same ideas, safe topics kind of recycled through different people's mouths. That's not to say it's a bad thing, but when it just keeps on going and going and going, I feel like there's nothing to look forward to except the next wave of debuts. I hope this doesn't come off as negative or hurtful at all, I just wish there was more besides game playthroughs and karaokes. Maybe it's just the most generally/ widely appealing 'niche'?
I think you’ve articulated what I’ve been planning to do for ~2 years now(yes I planned that long)…Thank you! I write stories. I write different spins on songs. My art is in painting with words. I see VTubing as a way to show people who we are(on the inside), maybe I’m wrong, but that’s the path I will trailblaze if I have to! Thanks Kozii ^~^
And I'm glad you went for it. I LOVE these open conversations. It's not bad to not enjoy them but I feel like these sort of things attracts mature discussion. And I mean non-negative laced takes, your takes are neutral and uplifting in a way so it attracts the folks who actually act like adults.
This video is so extremely helpful and soothes my nerves, since I wanted to join in and start content creation for myself. Perfectionism and my narcissistic characteristic tendencies make the "creation" aspect of all projects, wether that would be writing or smth else, much more difficult for me. This video couldn't have come at a better time, thank you❤
Commenting to help your channel with the algorithm so you can hopefully recover from the risk you made by producing this type of content. Honestly, I only found you because of this channel. A vtuber who wasn't afraid of being real with content creation, going against the norms of the industry by talking about behind the scenes details and disillusioning the fans, was something I never knew I needed. I think I was also growing tired of the typical vtuber content of playing video games, singing, and art (The "safe" content you talked about), which was why you felt like a breath of fresh air. Glad to support you where I can.
I think that is what I’ve been liking about your channel, you seem to always hit the mark (at least in my case) about the second guessing crisis one has as a start out newbie. I mean… I get the gist. FOLLOW MY PASSION!! But what happens when I’m passionate about a lot of things and don’t have the luxury of time? I’ve been stuck overthinking, because i don’t want to make the wrong step… Although, it looks like I already have. Everyone jumps into this world is heading for the Idol/Gamer/Streamer route , because it’s the formula that worked. But for me… I, for instance, have limited time and can only find small breaks where I can edit on my phone whenever I have a break from work, or the wife can spend time with the little one while I can have some 30 minutes of alone time. And while I’ve been wanting to make prerecorded videos about my hobbies… I sometimes debate if I should just talk about these real 'circumstances' that an aspiring VTuber faces. But then I don’t want to not talk about my hobbies 😝 Either way, keep on with these great videos, they’re actually cathartic for me in a way 😜
Overthinking can stop a lot of us from pursuing what we enjoy. I was that Vtuber with a checklist and I spent a year prepping for my Debut. It was a good experience for sure but damn did it exhaust me! Never fear thinking out of the box.
What's sad about overthinking is you just end up making a simple thing look and feel more complicated than it actually is. If you are new to VTubing, especially if you are somewhat shy as a person, you need to focus less on the growing subscribers and followers part (they will come as you grow your channel) and focus more on building your channel its self. You will evolve organically and thus be able to learn the ropes and handle things easier as you do. The biggest thing any 'Tuber or Creator must do in my opinion is to set up a basic foundation that helps define them and their channel. Once you have that as a sort of aid to fall back on, then proceed with the video making, the artwork and positive interactions with the comments that drip, drip, drip into your comments section. I would definitely advise people to keep in mind that you will be dealing with a global audience as you expand so be a bit careful with what you put out there. Especially when it comes to politics! I would also say to a new Creator to keep in mind that people get attracted to different creators for different reasons and from different directions so don't worry about "hitting the sweet spot" and following select paths to attract followers. I wouldn't have known about this channel for example were it not for Kitsunero who promoted it as she reacted to a few if your videos on her streams and had it not been for a RUclips recommendation, I would not have known about "Kitsu" either. My recent VTubing experience in the last month or three can be summed up as: "Oh, she's got a cute avatar, wonder what she's like" "I like what I see, I'll watch more" "I like you so much I subscribed" "Who's this cute character you're reacting to?" "That's her name? I'll have a look after the stream" "I like this one. I'll Subscribe". Went to see one VTuber out of curiosity, ended up seeing about seven of the buggers thanks to her streams and Twitch Raids!
Personally I enjoy your vidios thats how I discovered you tbh, I know for me my videos were originally for use to myself and friends for DnD (basically like notes for the session) and now I have other stuff planned and seeing this stuff has been very inspirational for myself so thank you for making it
This video popped up on my RUclips front page, very curious I was to see "stop overthinking" I clicked right away! As the video started to play I was very confused to see that I was no longer subscribed? and proceeded to check the channel over to confirm that this is a new channel! I'm very happy to see this, I catch you live when I can but this.. this is perfect! Content I can simply listen to while shopping, driving or just taking it easy at home. Of cause watching is better but I do highly value content that I can follow along with by simply listening too! I look forward to getting through the back log over the next couple days! I do very much enjoy real talk. I like hearing different perspectives & things that perhaps I've over looked or never considered. Sure I love being silly & having a laugh like everyone else... but I do think there's room for both, and this new channel might just be a great way to do just that! I'm also interested to see what topics (be it interesting ramble, in depth look into Vtubing/streaming culture or what ever else comes to mind!) I'm totally here for it!
Ty for sending out the advice, I started doing edits etc and etc, I gotten less views and felt like I just wanted to give up, until you gave me this advice, ty
Man I need to stop gushing over your videos but again EVERYTHING you'd said is exactly how I feel!! I feel like we are super similar! ( granted I'm also on the spectrum haha ) But again, yes please don't stop! I think these kinds of videos are SO healthy for the vtubing community and just what we need it would be beautiful if people started to make more content like this and to maybe learn to not judge or dislike people for being PEOPLE ;;; Some people, like me, want THIS content. THIS RIGHT HERE. 🤌
Honestly so many videos I saw in the community for so long were just.. drama, cancellation, someone got banned, vtubing is so expensive, etc. I wanna see more of the opposite.. so I guess I can be one of the ones that does it 😂 I'm glad you like them so much, I definitely won't stop!! You shouldn't either! 💪😤 We'll pave the kinda change we want by ourselves!
I saw this video on your twi (x)&this is 100% me...I have a bad habbit I always overthink... :( but U are inspiring,I 100% agreed on this topic of content creation even tho Im watching this in the morning without coffee, theres times where Im like HEY I miss doing throwbak thurs or flashbak fridays at 1st I was scared... but now Im like I can stream watever game I want
I'd say the "do what you want" is specifically good advice for *starting out*- since getting the ball rolling can be the hardest part. Plus if you don't think too much about the content you can focus precious neurons on the technical parts of editing, mixing etc. But yes you'll need to evolve to a more sophisticated "strategy" as you go and the basics become second nature
I wish all vtubers knew that it doesn't mean you have to be a streamer. It's not sustainable for everyone, some people just like making stuff without being live ❤
I totally agree that creators should avoid overthinking and just make something that they enjoy. You really have no idea how much people will like the things that was "stupid, weird, different, but I thought it would be fun" unless you actually do it and put your passion into action. Min-maxing a "traditional" format might not make you stand out. That time (and money) can be spent on doing something unique and forging your own format.
Its hard not to overthink one's identity when you're given the opportunity to become your idealized self. But there is a lot of value in just turning on the camera and rambling into the void. Even if there is a bit of a ritual to summon that void in the first place. That said, I am enjoying the more philosophical content. I find that I more closely follow the vtubers who do stuff like this despite how seemingly antithetical it is to the industry. But thats a sign that people are evolving, and thats a good thing. Even if it means Twitter is gonna get its panties in a bunch over it. Its as you say, "if you're enjoying what you're creating, you should create it." As a writer, I can't tell you how often I want to jam that or similar lines down people's throats. There is a value in creating for an audience of one, but so many people get tripped up by "but my audience" that they just don't do the thing. When, nine times out of ten, your audience just wants you to _do the thing_ . They are there for _you_ . Us creatives think too much lol.
Seeing someone with a very similar thought process is quiet nice. Its rare to see these views along with this perspective, so I don't feel alone on this. Keep it up!
Based vid as always since i started watching your vids here. Will give my thoughts on it after sleep (is almost 1am here), but... Not sure how you'll take this, but you give me GEEGA vibes. I mean this as a compliment. Dunno... Think it's cause she's pretty down to earth and gives quite the insightful thoughts on whatever topic is done in chat.
Personally if someone tells me "don't overthink it" the message I get is "If you can't wrap your head around it with minimum effort then it's above your mental capacity" Clarification: I don't mean I think that's what they're trying to tell me, but I feel like that's what the reality is and they just can't comprehend the difference in our levels
Interesting take, and I kinda get it. I get told not to overthink things a lot when my thinking is like.. things like the videos I'm making. Which, in those cases, when I'm having an open and honest discussion, 'don't overthink it' only comes across as 'ugh, shut up'. This was definitely more like, hey, think about it, but don't think about it so much that you never act on it if it's what you actually want to do. 😂
@@koziitwo That's definitely a better way to look at it. But if someone tells you "don't overthink it" in terms of deciding on content, yeah, that's definitely not the same thing. Maybe it's less "ugh, shut up" and more "this is something that's ultimately gotta come from you so if you complicate it too much it might never see the light of day" sprinkled with a hint of "Why're you askin' me? You're the one who's gotta like it." (But I've dropped in some heavy assumptions here so if I missed the mark completely please pretend I didn't say anything 😁)
Nah, I don't really have much subtext here. As I said, it comes with risks, it's hard, and just saying 'don't overthink it' usually isn't very helpful because it's hard to figure out what that means- but for my case in particular, it really is just, don't think *too* hard, cus you've still gotta make it. Some things can come after that.
@@koziitwo Well from where I'm sitting at least whatever advice you're following is doing the trick. And I'll bet the advice you're giving is gonna help the people following it
6:56 how dare you be chill, down to earth, and give good advice! Imma be your number one hater now! Ignore that subscribe and like I gave! (But seriously, I appreciate these videos. And on a side note, surprised this channel is so new!)
4:30 I'm surprised. I've always been a deep thinker and always assumed the reason was related to something else(people ignoring me and/or just people not going out of their way to talk to me)... I guess I've been oblivious cause I always thought the people around me were just smarter(and felt like they'd be stupid to not pay attention to me, making me become more verbose and annoying)... 6:38 Yeah those people... I should stop thinking about them too. 7:09 That's great! 13:34 RUclips TOS breathing down my neck... 14:04 I agree. 14:16 I tweeted wayyyy too much recently. And I'm not even a big Twitter nut, yet totally seem like I would be based on what I've tweeted.
The thing is, no matter what you do, there's always gonna be some people who don't like that. There's the saying "know your audience." It takes experience to know how to set up a model right and structure your thoughts and so many other things. But once you figure out the important basics, you're free to do what you like with the right audience in mind. Encouragement is valuable but it's not actionable advice. Helps different people in different situations
Omg you are saying what I've been thinking for a few years now. I love making Live2D models and making video essays, streaming all the time is not for me at all. So that's what I've been doing and I have been so happy since about last year. It's great. People need to remember that using a virtual Avatar as a medium does not mean it restricts you to just doing idol culture stuff. To be honest, I actually don't watch vtuber streams, using an Avatar whether it's PNG, Live2D, or 3D is a medium and you can do so much with it. And PNGs of your Avatar has been around so much longer. and can be a lot more successful than anyone with an expensive model. (Think of the Rant-sonas from the mid 2010s) There are so many possibilities. And also please if you're small don't worry about getting big, enjoy every step of the way.
I prioritize income. I still was overthinking that! Income isn't something that will always come, if you only prioritize safe content and you never experiment to find your own brand and your own content identity. If it were that easy, nobody would have ever become a Vtuber to begin with.. or even a RUclipsr, they would have stuck with traditional entertainment.
I think the biggest thing about the boxes people put themselves in is that they need to be *themselves*. Everyone is unique and to not be your own unique self is sacrificing your best aspect.
As others have mentioned, I really just see VTubing as a tool to content creators who doesn’t want to show themselves. It is scary with what the first generation of RUclipsrs had to go through for being doxxed. I want to say that this is fantastic advice and really help me with pushing towards actually making something. Another thing I want to bring up is the balance between preplanning that you did and with how the “traditional” vtubing things like debut, cover song, model reveal, etc. those are essentially what worked over time from trial and errors of many Vtubers. It is easy to understand for most audience and “easy to consume”. So depending on one’s goal (do what one loves or want to make it big) it is a good thing to consider. I really like this video and it is surprisingly motivating to get me started of my day
Did you think that vtubers streaming games and Legos and crafting is saturated? You're right. There's too much of the concept of escape. You being real as a human is the minority now. Being deep is appreciated! I'm saying this as a viewer of the vtuber craft.
Did you find it liberating to just make these type of free flow opinion pieces? Glad the channel is catching on. I feel like some talented people are pigeonholing themselves on specific streaming activities because there's a notion that "thats what vtubers do. The tried and true way that just works". But they struggle to gain notoriety in a sea of people who do the same thing
Yeah! It's also a lot more mentally stimulating than normal streaming. I still enjoy streaming, but it's kind of just.. fun for the sake of fun, entertainment for the sake of entertainment. I show up to try to crack a couple dumb jokes, maybe talk about a couple of things, and otherwise just play a game for several hours. Doing these opinionated sorta commentary pieces means that I sit down for an hour or two and I actually think out things about these subjects, I try to come up with a message to give to people, and some worth to provide to people beyond just entertainment. It's not the same vibe as my normal stuff, and both hold their own place, and I know I still enjoy the silly stuff too - I was just playing chained together the other day too, and it was fun! But.. It's really refreshing to have this now, too.
Not naming names but i was told by a friend who is considered “big” to “stream everyday the same game” and honestly that depleted my energy to stream even if it got me views. And i stopped playing the game. Now i play more of the things i want and i may not do as well but i have a different energy!
There is a reason if you ask a rich man for advice he would say "Just do it" as sure you may stagnate a bit but you will catch onto the algorithm like picked up by it and gain traction. Most content creators don't have much to lose so they can afford to do something new for a while to see if they like it
"Do what you want" as a tip alone for content creators is fairly bad advice. I would go for more a "go for it, do what you want and start to learn and research how to make it work for you over time"-approach. Being in many creator groups and discords showed me that many, way to many people start streaming/vtubing on a very light hearted approach (which is good to see if you like being a streamer/content creator; I did the same) but then after a bit of trying and saying that you like it and want to make it work, they don't do any new actions in terms of learning, trying and applying their new knowledge. The risk of failing is high if you want to try out new types of content. People might not like it, make fun of it, but that doesnt mean that nobody will enjoy it. Growing doesn't happen over night, it doesnt require the perfect short/tiktok/reel that goes viral, but it does require being stubborn and open for new things, learning from others, adjust (in a way that its still you and your personality), and going your path that you cherrish. Doing what you want can keep you from burning out (hopefully). But not learning, improving, taking advice you get seriously and go into action mode and try out new things, will (and made) many creators very discouraged because the viewer/follower/overall numbergame results are not coming. Sadly I see many complain then about that, they want some comfort and advice, but never change, adjust and try again. They dont give themselves a chance to spread their wings because of "this could embarass myself, people will laugh at me" and so on. But in the end there will always be people that dont like your content, make fun of it and dont have your opinion. Overthinking wont prevent anyone from that c: Before I start essaying too much: Spread your wings; always remind yourself why you want to go on this journey, why you want to grow; grow beyong yourself; learn, try, fail, adjust over time; be free, create. because that is the joy of being a content creator. If something doesnt work out like you thought, dont let it get you down. take it as learning, see what you can change and fly again.
I've attended school for too many years of my life and I can't think as smartly as the top 96% of people How did everyone else figure out how to do it?
Kinda, you need 1k subs, a few videos posted, and 4k watch hours Or for fan funding, 500 subs with 3k watch hours, so that's super thanks/super chats and memberships (This channel isn't monetized yet though, only my main with almost 16k!)
is it cliche to now say, 'just DO it! DO IT!'?

I’ve been wanting to find a channel like this for ages and it really satisfies my craving. It’s an amazing skill to be able to talk like this without a script and say everything so clearly. I hope I can be more like you in the future! Looking forward to more videos. 💗
Thank you so much, that's honestly super flattering, I'm glad you're enjoying them all! 😭
Yes, yes, go for it!! :D
And I'm glad you went for it. I LOVE these open conversations. It's not bad to not enjoy them but I feel like these sort of things attracts mature discussion. And I mean non-negative laced takes, your takes are neutral and uplifting in a way so it attracts the folks who actually act like adults.
catch me making a 'i hate news channels' video someday, i swear, lmao
@@koziitwo I have a feeling you know exactly how I feel about those kind of channels ahahaha C:
This video is so extremely helpful and soothes my nerves, since I wanted to join in and start content creation for myself. Perfectionism and my narcissistic characteristic tendencies make the "creation" aspect of all projects, wether that would be writing or smth else, much more difficult for me. This video couldn't have come at a better time, thank you❤
Well said, and I like how you're showing people to do what you love, what you like to do or passionate about. Good luck on your path to success!
I really appreciate the honesty in these videos and the way they stimulate my braun to think about stuff.
Thank you!
I’ve been stuck overthinking, because i don’t want to make the wrong step…
Although, it looks like I already have.
But then I don’t want to not talk about my hobbies 😝
Either way, keep on with these great videos, they’re actually cathartic for me in a way 😜
Overthinking can stop a lot of us from pursuing what we enjoy.
I really enjoy listening to you talk about stuff Kozii ❣Loving this format!!
( granted I'm also on the spectrum haha )
But again, yes please don't stop! I think these kinds of videos are SO healthy for the vtubing community and just what we need
it would be beautiful if people started to make more content like this and to maybe learn to not judge or dislike people for being PEOPLE ;;;
Some people, like me, want THIS content. THIS RIGHT HERE. 🤌
Honestly so many videos I saw in the community for so long were just.. drama, cancellation, someone got banned, vtubing is so expensive, etc. I wanna see more of the opposite.. so I guess I can be one of the ones that does it 😂
I'm glad you like them so much, I definitely won't stop!! You shouldn't either! 💪😤 We'll pave the kinda change we want by ourselves!
@@koziitwo lets gooo!!!
Really enjoying your videos, thanks for making them.
True! When you're starting out there's less risk, so you might as well do just about anything. 💪
I wish all vtubers knew that it doesn't mean you have to be a streamer. It's not sustainable for everyone, some people just like making stuff without being live ❤
youtube keeps bringing me back to u
Welcome back 😌
I totally agree that creators should avoid overthinking and just make something that they enjoy.
If your content speaks people will listen. 💖 I really enjoy your videos on this channel so far! You talk about things I feel!
I dont know if imcould be my own favorite content creator but thats definitely a good goal
@@Saint_Medusa hey, might as well give it a shot, for sure!
Quick look at the channel, and definitely subbed, keep the great vids up
Also subbing to the main channel
Personally if someone tells me "don't overthink it" the message I get is "If you can't wrap your head around it with minimum effort then it's above your mental capacity"
Clarification: I don't mean I think that's what they're trying to tell me, but I feel like that's what the reality is and they just can't comprehend the difference in our levels
And on a side note, surprised this channel is so new!)
you're so real for all of this
4:30 I'm surprised.
Thanks for the advice and for sharing your experience. Have a nice day!
(Think of the Rant-sonas from the mid 2010s)
There are so many possibilities. And also please if you're small don't worry about getting big, enjoy every step of the way.
you have good point
Yes, more should make full videos about varying topics. Vtubers not Vtwitchers.
hit the nail on the head good video
It's a question of priorities, income vs discovery. Corpos prioritize income.
We can spend every day trying to escape, but we still live inside of reality, and sometimes we've just gotta face it.
just fyi: I've never seen you before & this is the 1st time google recommended one of your videos
Some people can do that and it works great for them, but that advice can't work for every person, yeah. Glad you're finding what you like instead!
There is a reason if you ask a rich man for advice he would say "Just do it" as sure you may stagnate a bit but you will catch onto the algorithm like picked up by it and gain traction. Most content creators don't have much to lose so they can afford to do something new for a while to see if they like it
I like this channel. I don't watch your main channel.
And that's okay! I'm glad you enjoy this one! 🙌
Overthinking wont prevent anyone from that c:
Before I start essaying too much: Spread your wings; always remind yourself why you want to go on this journey, why you want to grow; grow beyong yourself; learn, try, fail, adjust over time; be free, create. because that is the joy of being a content creator. If something doesnt work out like you thought, dont let it get you down. take it as learning, see what you can change and fly again.
I've attended school for too many years of my life and I can't think as smartly as the top 96% of people
How did everyone else figure out how to do it?
wait. wait. you can get monetized at over 1k vtubers?
Kinda, you need 1k subs, a few videos posted, and 4k watch hours
Or for fan funding, 500 subs with 3k watch hours, so that's super thanks/super chats and memberships
(This channel isn't monetized yet though, only my main with almost 16k!)
never seen or heard of you, but great video. Ive been comtemplating the same thing recently. like and follow from me 👍
