I've always considered Vera-Ellen to be the best overall dancer in movie history, but I haven't seen everything by Eleanor Powell. This one, however, she does what I thought was impossible: beat Ann Miller at tap dancing! A truly incredible routine.
Vera Ellen was undoubtedly Hollywood's best dancer. This was fusion dancing - a combo of ballet and acrobatics. She was so supple, her body could move in any direction at lightening speed. None of the other dancers during the 40's and 50's had these special traits. Notice those strong, athletic legs on which she pirouetted. Of all the films from the 40's and 50's that I have seen her in, she has always had me enraptured and mesmerized. Belle of New York with Fred Astaire is my fave Vera Ellen movie for its superlative dancing. She was a knockout too in White Christmas and On the town. There will never be another VERA ELLEN! Seeing the joy on her face when she dances, heightens the viewers appreciation of her talent as an A-List Dancer.
Vera Ellen was such a talented versatile dancer so enjoyable to watch. Having seen many of her dances from old films, never disappointed in the performances she did, this is the first time I've seen this one....thanks for such a great video.

Tap dancing and ballet and singing. Plus the excellent lyrics and music. Delightful.
She’s not singing. Rosemary Clooney has said Vera-Ellen could not carry a toon. They dubbed her in White Christmas.
Vera-Ellen never sang in her films. The voice she’s lip-syncing to here belongs to June Hutton. 😂
