this type of turtle does not bask and does not need UVB light. I've had one for almost 20 years now. They NEVER leave the water. Not all reptiles / turtles are the same. This is why I always recommend musk turtles as best pets.

But my Russians I let figure it out themselves
@@Max-yt6zb it's a lot of work, and depending on the species you will need to get a very large enclosure. But it's fun seeing how different their personalities are. I had a few red-eared sliders, one I got as a baby and she acted more like a dog than a turtle. Another one I got from my neighbor who was neglected most of his life, he was aggressive at first. But became just shy towards people later on. Three that were saved from a freeway, one was out going and let you hand feed her, but never pick her up. The other one was scared of almost everything, except his friends. And the last freeway one was shy, but still liked a little attention. Then one of my mom's friends gave her another one, she was also neglected, she was very hyperactive. The last one was a baby my aunt found in her backyard. He was comfortable around people. But didn't get as affectionate as the first one. Probably because the first one was an only child and got spoiled the first few years of her life. Especially because we didn't know handling them was bad, so we even swimmed with her in our kiddie pool when we were kids. We didn't add chlorine to the pool, so she was safe.

Wow this takes me back when I first got my turtle how small she was get ready for the tank to be destroyed- plants everywhere and floating etc if you wiggle you fingers above the tank does he respond to it my turtle knows it’s feeding every time I do it she knew it when I got her
I have an actual Russian tortoise named Boris the Blade. Now that you've done the Russian accent for Timmy, I'll always think of him and Boris as being cousins, lol. He's so dang cute I can't stand it! Thank you for another great video.
I was so confused as to where you'd gotten such a small turtle because, here in the states, it's illegal to sell turtles under 4 inches in length, but it makes sense that you're in the UK!
You can buy turtles under 4 inches if you are a hobbyist and not keeping as a pet. Check Breeders! I just bought three 1 inch southern painted turtles and they are adorable.
Haha caught off guard on the upload. With the cave tank I'd recommend easing off on the ferts, cyanobacteria/ blue green algea spreading like that is a sign of too much nutrients/ phosphorus. Also increase circulation/ aeration if possible, and do a bit of a bigger water change on your next maintenence. You can get treatments but they contain copper, so if you ever want to use the tank for shrimp at some point avoid using them. Timmy is a cute little button. 👍
@@MDFishTanks like me, I use them occasionally when I remember! Try getting a bit more filtration in there and oxygen. Skimmer if you have one will work. It's properly just excess getting caught in the rocks. It's as you say not a major problem. Studios coming along great, you're flying 👍
Just watched this with my 6yo and he was laughing his head off at the Timmy voice 🤣 Did your kids ever do this nursery rhyme: "I had a tiny turtle, His name was Tiny Tim, I put him in the bathtub, To see if he could swim He drank up all the water, He ate a bar of soap, Any now my tiny turtle, Has bubbles in his throat, Bubble bubble bubble, Bubble bubble bubble, Bubbllllllllllle....POP!" Very nice set up for your Mississippi musk turtle! One thing is that turtles, especially musk turtles, are known for being excellent climbers believe it or not. He can easily get out and fall from drift wood on the left corner. Just put some pieces of acrylic plates on the side or better yet make a pile of rocks and driftwood in the middle of tank.
Looks like a Snapping Turtle. The ones in the US, don’t need UV Light and Heatlamps for Shell Development. We had two babies, that were found in the yard, in September, after a late Hurricane came through. We kept them over the Winter, they grew really fast. We released them to a Spring Feed Pond, in the Late Spring.
Love how you use the kids to get what you want ... 😂 have 4 kids and never used to them to purchase koi I want 🤫 haha keep it going mate love seeing someone in the UK on here doing what we all love get your ass down to Wiltshire and sort out my discus tank lol
My first comment is great setup my suggestion is move the rock section on the leftaway from the edge of the tank or pull a hood section along both sides and the rear as timmy will climb out, i have 4 turtles and have had one climb up a section i thought was low enough for him to not climb out and he ended up getting out and falling and breaking the back section of his carapace ot looks amazing though and more then happy to send you pics of my most amazing tank for you to check out and perhaps look at a similar idea for the future as timmy will outgrow it and i have taken bits of inspiration from your builds for my setup here in Australia
Ok just saw your ecosystem no water change video i will say as timmy gets older he will rip up all the plants but its just a good excuse to mix it all up just be cautious with small rocks or course sand/crush quartz as turtls dig around and will eat plants and moss and most deaths with turtles tend to be due to impaction if you can use rocks bigger then his head or fine play sand and you should avoid this issue and expect a long life i have a turtl who is 43 years old and they can live between 60 and 100+ depending on the species so he will definitely be a hand me down turtle but you will spend hours just watching him swim as he gets older and not as shy
So cute and such a cool setup! definitely would take stacking rocks on top of another into consideration as it makes pockets they can get stuck in. I say this with experience as i had one of mine get his shell wedged in between two rocks underwater and to say the least you can guess what happend... :(
I was happy with my planted tank and bowl until I saw this video... now I want a turtle!!!! My husband will soon ban me from watching your videos as it’s becoming an expensive hobby. TIMMAAAAY!
Videos have made me want to plant my daughters tank which is just full of plastic. Question is if I remove all the ornaments and gravel and add plants rocks wood and tropica substrate will it need recycled ? Filter has been running a good few months now.
It can depend on the size of the tank but you should be OK with levels of bacteria in the filter system, I'd return about a third of the original water into the tank to assist feeding the bacteria. What fish/ stock is already in the tank?
@@MrThebadge barbs are sturdy little fish, remove them with some of their tank water and keep them covered in a dark place to keep stress to a minimum. Return them to the tank with that water as the water will contain micro materials that will feed the benificial bacteria and keep the cycle going. Plan well and be organised so you can get the fish back in a soon as possible. Good luck hope it turns out well for you. Oh an just be careful of tank mates for barbs, they can be fin nippers.
@@MrThebadge welcome to the hobby, it's quite a friendly one, mostly. So don't be afraid to ask questions and yes research is important. Patience is a key factor. But I'm sure you'll love it, your wallet might not tho. Lol barbs are are great hardy beginner fish, I love them as they are lively little things, and there is some great options for tank buddies for them.
Why was the turtle sent home in a plastic bag of water? When I get my turtles they were placed in a box or small container. And when turtles are shipped, I usually see them in containers without water. I’m not an expert or anything, just curious on why the store put the turtle in a bag of water
So beautiful vedio..I m big fan of your work sir...u r awesome...u buy cute baby turtle...tank looks fantastic...your kids are so cute and sweet...keep it up sir
Hey there! Love how you take care of your aquariums and pets, but can you make an update on the turtle please? I've had one for about an year now and life got really though with it ahah. He is a little interior designer, taking down every plant, filter and rocks we've put it and he is super messy, so we get to change it's water quite frequently - when we tried using a substrate and plants, water has always been cloudy, so we've got a few rocks, but quite small so he always tries to eat them. We also tried using sand, but it was really really small, and the water again got super cloudy on his every movement. So back at my question - could you make an update on how you adjust the aquarium for the turtle as he grows out of it? Thank you so much!
Beta fish are know to jump out of tanks cause they do it in the wild to escape predator fish and they can spend a full hour out of the water. My beta jumped put one day and my cat went crazy. Luckily he still was ok with no damage. He died 2 years later but lived a happy life. Lids are important with betas and if you decide to house them with anything else I would recommend guppies and mollies. I did that with one I got later on and they all were very happy in their 40 gallon tank. Just make sure u still check on them. Having a camera on them 24/7 is good. That is what i did with my tank. I now have a 3 striped mud turtle that I found outside yesterday along with a chinese waterdragon and a keynan sand boa and a ball python. All are in separate tanks ofc. I enjoy your vids and ur turtle tank build was helpful thank you.
Hey md, been watching your videos for ages. Love what you do and how clean and crisp all your tanks look. 👍 P. S. You should put about 15 khuli loaches in your rainbow river, it would look epic. I have 10 myself in my 120 litre planted guppy colony and they love chilling out in the drift wood and rocks.
Great video, 😍x Could you post a link for the light fixture, please, or where did you get it? The ones I’ve been looking at only have a clip and not the screw on the side of the tank style, like yours. Is it a heat and uv together?

Love your videos so much! I’m recently getting back into the hobby and your approach resonates with me. I’m totally hooked! & your kids are the best!
I love TIIMMEEHHHY!!! He’s so tiny and adorable!!!! 🥰
Doodles.....🥰🥰. Love Timmy too! So tiny!!!!
It's a kind of musk turtle.
Cool video! Your fish are so cool and your tank setups are cool too!!
😊😊
ADDICTED TO YOUR CHANNEL MD🤩
Awesome setup. Just watch out as they are incredible escape climbing artists.
Great video! That was so "English" when you said "boys, shall we go put Timmy in the Tank". 😂
Spencer Wells And “can I have a feel?” Heheh
Love how you use the kids to get what you want ... 😂 have 4 kids and never used to them to purchase koi I want 🤫 haha keep it going mate love seeing someone in the UK on here doing what we all love get your ass down to Wiltshire and sort out my discus tank lol
OHMIGOSH. First time I saw hillstream loaches that was my reaction too - "miniature stingrays"!
Do I need a filter for a 5 gallon planted tank?
I plan on having shrimp and Enders. Thanks.
Cool bananas...it’s Turtle Time 😂💙😁
So cute and such a cool setup! definitely would take stacking rocks on top of another into consideration as it makes pockets they can get stuck in.
TIMMAAAAY!
That is the cleanest setup I’ve seen.
Love watching back to when you first got Timmy 🥰
Where is that shop you went as would be interested in the newts.
@@77slate 60 liters has 4 small rosy barbs and 2 cherry barbs. Dont want to add any more until its planted and healthy
@@77slate appreciate the help and yeah I am new to the hobby didnt learn that until I started reading and researching more. 👍👍
I always enjoy the Timmy part 😭😆
What a huge home for him! He must be loving it!
Bigger than my fkn apt
FINALLY! I've been waiting for the turtle and especially for the kids' reaction ❣️ lovelots
Why was the turtle sent home in a plastic bag of water? When I get my turtles they were placed in a box or small container. And when turtles are shipped, I usually see them in containers without water. I’m not an expert or anything, just curious on why the store put the turtle in a bag of water
Timmy is adorable! You should go back and get the newt, they would look so cool together. Call him Tommy. Timmy and Tommy! 👍😀🐢😎✌
3:48 that voice crack 😂

super cute!!! i love the set up you did to!!!
Apparently tannins in the water help the turtles skin as well. Helps them molt and not get flakey skin.
What shop did you get Timmy from?
Nice u got it own Cool Shed for Fishes
Dude I absolutely love your positive energy! Your videos make me smile and I always learn something new!

You're a good Dad.

Thumbs up just cause you buckled that turtle in.
Timmy in, moustache out ;)
lol. accidently went a bit short. good job it grows in days lol.
Beautiful tanks what kind of lights are you using to keep your plants alive?
Oh shit the beginning caught me off guard and it was hilarious
Go get that newt!! Timmeyh is so tineyyy ❤️❤️
Haha glad I'm not the only one that puts a belt on my fish 😂👍
Hey md, been watching your videos for ages. Love what you do and how clean and crisp all your tanks look. 👍
That turtle is CUTE!!
