Originally there were 418 trainees and only 300 of them could be Spartans. So I think that they took the best of the best from that 300 and used whoever was left for the operation
Right, but the problem is the book says 300 died in the Alpha Company and 298 from Beta. This was (supposedly) because Halo Reach hadn't been released yet and the game developers were starting to get a little pissed at the authors for writing without consulting them on the stories (basically so the continuity is good) and so they decided to throw a wrench into their stories to put them on notice.
The spartan 3 project was completed 3 times as said on the book. The two first groups died, the third was on their way to a new mission by the end of the book
300 spartans were launched at the start of the operation. thats what it says in the book. 9 of them died during drop pod failures before they could hit the ground.

7:05, the spartan3s were so good in hand to hand combat and fast that the covenant became terrified to engage them in hand to hand combat and had to retreat and they were actually winning the battle until the covenant cruisers arrived with reinforcements. Spartan3 were pretty badass just like the spartan2s

I dont understand this tactic. Spartans are special operation capable units. They're supposed to be the scalpels of war, used to make very precise surgical strikes, not used for heavy muscle especially in a scenario like this. The UNSC clearly wanted a stealth mission, given their gear. So a much smaller team plus ample support elements would have sufficed.
Ron never really mentions it of course cuz he’s trash but In the book it says the spartan 3’s were created as suicide soldiers. Completely different than spartan 2s. Their armor was much cheaper as was their augmentations. It’s a terrible tactic yes but ONI expected a 100% casualty rate, the same thing which happened to alpha company (also 300) who were sent on a different suicide mission.
It was a conundrum. It was too high risk for Spartan 2s. And Marines and odsts would fail. Ackerson was kind of a smug ass who wanted to show up Halsey so he proposed the idea.
Two words: Colonel Ackerson. When he created the S-III Program, he intended them to be cheaper and disposable supersoldiers to buy time than gain tactical victories. The entire op, on my view, was a waste of resources, lives, and funds. This operation only didn't change overall war effort, the Covenant managed act as if nothing happened and continued to steamroll the UNSC even if you pushed then back at other refueling stations. You could achieve the same results and create just as much destruction if you send smaller teams of Spartan III headhunters to take out the refueling facility. Those S-IIIs would have been much useful if you spread them out in places where their training and skills would be best used at to hurt the Covies. Those 298 Spartans could have made a difference everywhere else while still terrorize the enemy and augment other UNSC forces as force multipliers. I wager ONI knew this but they let Ackerson run the show. The ambition, the ego, and idiocy of Ackerson is why the UNSC wasted 298 fully trained supersoldiers.
It wasn't really a bad idea at all war requires sacrifice and had the op gone on the way it was planned I'm sure there would be significantly less casualties I mean it was a covert mission which is why they were less equipped than even regular Spartan III but the mission was blown the second they touched down they were incredibly unlucky with the odds stacked immeasurably against them and yet they still somehow managed to accomplish their mission they were children some as young as 10 if Ackerson was trying to make a point he made it respect to all those who served in Operation Torpedo
Yep but it took about 7 days of fighting to kill them all and for operation Torpedo guys were just unlucky because they run in those crusers when they moved in wor refueling and resuply

The Spartan 3s I don’t think were ever released to the public or to the rest of the UNSC only a handful of people actually knew about them so there was no reason to say MIA

ACTUALLY .the UNSC tried sending nukes yes .but the radiation emitted by the nukes emerging from slip space basically acted as flares and pretty much made the stealth coating useless . And they did destroy a few of the seraph fighters .and apparently a few covenant capital ships that were so massive they were mistaken by the STARS (an acronym for some baseball sized stealth satellites)as a part of the factory which is why the seraph fighters were attacking the spartan 3s so quickly .if you want more detail then my comment and this video then I reccomend that you read the halo book Ghosts of onyx

It was a shame that most of Beta company except for the ones removed for special assignments were taken out in action but their sacrifice saved many lives. This was the only choice without losing much military assets. Sending in spartan 2's and many soldiers would be a strategic loss and a waste of assets as you are essentially killing off spartan 2's and losing their armor that is worth an entire battle group and many soldiers live's. Spartan 3's are good in this case as they have the numbers and strength of spartan 2's. Also, look up on Operation: Prometheus. A large scale operation performed by Alpha company to destroy a covenant shipyard.
Jon tbh honest sending in spartan 2’s with the area of weapon and work they specialise it would have been more tactical if correctly thought then UNSC also did something wrong they should have done some weapons and vehicle drop through the ships on the covenant for the spartan cuz that would have resulted in a lot of help for the spartan the drop could have killed not many but a few covies and then the vehicles would have helped you know that’s just my thought
@@sabrelevine4241 it's good, so don't worry. The thing about Operation Torpedo is that there is a high chance of death. The spartan 2's are good but they have less than 40 members who survived their augmentations and with the casualties inflicted on them during the war it makes things even worse. The amount of funding the spartan 2 program got was insane and losing them would be a waste of assets. This was during a time when the UNSC were fighting a losing battle and the highly classified spartan 3 program was activated. Dropping down vehicles and weapons would be a bad idea as well since anti air weapons would take out the vehicles and equipment. It would also give away their position.
Hopefully see Tom and Lucy or Spartan IIIs in general. It's mad to think these were 11-12 year old kids with the bodies of professional athletes because the chemically induced puberty. Poor children.
Less than 298, you're forgetting the members of Beta Company that were pulled out for special teams like one of the other members of Noble (I think it was Kat), and a couple of other headhunter teams. Though the book came out before Reach and the video game people kinda wanted to stick it to the authors so I can forgive you for only mentioning Noble Six at least somewhat. ;)
Now remember, this battle was the second time this took place. The first company, Company A were completely wiped out during their mission which I believe was an attack on a ship building facility. This battle involved Company B. Company C's activation was during the final year of the war and not a lot is known about them other than they were shipped out from Onyx save for a few squads who were on planet when it went all Forerunner on everyone. Presumably Company C were on Reach when it fell but it is uncertain as the spartan 3 teams there were comprised of other members of A and B who were not assigned to the high risk assault missions.

Placing all 300 in such a small area was just... Spectacularly dumb. Doesn't matter the lethality rating of the Spartans being dumped in, you could dump in 300 Master Chiefs and you'd still fail because they can just glass the area.
What's more messed up with the Spartan - III's is that they were literally created to achieve the feats in combat the Spartan II's could, but were expected to die, and were thus augmented with a much higher pain tolerance and pure fucking animalistic survivability. There's a great segment about it later on in the book, (I won't spoil) where a spartan - III literally has half of his torso vaporized off from getting hit, yet he still gets up to fight.
I remember reading Ghosts of Onyx for the first time and I was amazed, surprised, and fascinated how operation torpedo would end. Rip spartan 3 Beta company.
I read a fanfic regarding this, the fact that the nuke killed not only all of the Covenant forces in the area but as well as the Spartans was actually chilling.
While he makes good videos, he constantly pronounces words wrong. And I don't mean tomato tomahto, I mean pronunciation I've never heard, annoyingly wrong. It's the main reason I don't watch his videos on a regular basis. I feel like he might have a speech impediment or English is his second language, which makes me feel really guilty for it bothering me. But I can't help it. XD
A large theme of this novel is the overall mindset ONI had toward Spartan IIIs. This is a shining example of classic military corner-cutting. ONI wanted Spartans, but they didn't want to pay out the massive price tag that Dr. Halsey managed to get for her Spartan IIs. So instead, with the "new" spartan program, they took children who were orphaned due to the Human-Covenant war; told them how they were going to be war heroes, shoved them into an accelerated training program, and equipped them with "experimental" budget equipment. Mjolner armor was well established, but at the cost of nearly an entire Human destroyer PER suit, ONI was having none of it. There is also the matter that ALL surviving Spartan IIs were issued their own personal AI who chose out their Spartan. ONI thus stuck the new Spartan III's in (experimental) semi-powered, crystalline gel-matrix, and open to the environment stealth suits. The first version of these suits (used on the mission in the video above) were far from perfect as the projected stealth field would more make you seem like a moving body of water rather than entirely transparent. This thereby made them nearly useless for such a mass mission as the stealth mode did not contribute to the mission beyond the first few minutes within the forested area and the armor itself was better designed for kinetic weapons, not plasma as the covenant use. It was later mentioned how once Tom and Lucy jumped into the water how their helmets were filling with water, which forced them to abandon their armor or risk drowning due to it's negative buoyancy and lack of environmental sealing. Bottom line. ONI took one of their potentially greatest assets, pointed them in the direction of a MASSIVE problem... and threw a goddamned coupon in their faces and flipping them the bird.
The s3's were made for missions like that. They mass produced them for suicide missions. Which is also why they had weaker armor than the s2 they were trained with s2 battle data on the enemies but they were mainly meat for the grinder

It was a shame that most of Beta company except for the ones removed for special assignments were taken out in action but their sacrifice saved many lives. This was the only choice without losing much military assets. Sending in spartan 2's and many soldiers would be a strategic loss and a waste of assets as you are essentially killing off spartan 2's and losing their armor that is worth an entire battle group and many soldiers live's. Spartan 3's are good in this case as they have the numbers and strength of spartan 2's. Also, look up on Operation: Prometheus. A large scale operation performed by Alpha company to destroy a covenant shipyard.
Jon tbh honest sending in spartan 2’s with the area of weapon and work they specialise it would have been more tactical if correctly thought then UNSC also did something wrong they should have done some weapons and vehicle drop through the ships on the covenant for the spartan cuz that would have resulted in a lot of help for the spartan the drop could have killed not many but a few covies and then the vehicles would have helped you know that’s just my thought
@@sabrelevine4241 it's good, so don't worry. The thing about Operation Torpedo is that there is a high chance of death. The spartan 2's are good but they have less than 40 members who survived their augmentations and with the casualties inflicted on them during the war it makes things even worse. The amount of funding the spartan 2 program got was insane and losing them would be a waste of assets. This was during a time when the UNSC were fighting a losing battle and the highly classified spartan 3 program was activated.
Dropping down vehicles and weapons would be a bad idea as well since anti air weapons would take out the vehicles and equipment. It would also give away their position.

I read this book a few months back and you did a great job explaining it
Less than 298, you're forgetting the members of Beta Company that were pulled out for special teams like one of the other members of Noble (I think it was Kat), and a couple of other headhunter teams. Though the book came out before Reach and the video game people kinda wanted to stick it to the authors so I can forgive you for only mentioning Noble Six at least somewhat. ;)
Now remember, this battle was the second time this took place. The first company, Company A were completely wiped out during their mission which I believe was an attack on a ship building facility. This battle involved Company B. Company C's activation was during the final year of the war and not a lot is known about them other than they were shipped out from Onyx save for a few squads who were on planet when it went all Forerunner on everyone. Presumably Company C were on Reach when it fell but it is uncertain as the spartan 3 teams there were comprised of other members of A and B who were not assigned to the high risk assault missions.
This battle was basically the first chapter of Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. An amazing intro to a fantastic book.

Placing all 300 in such a small area was just... Spectacularly dumb. Doesn't matter the lethality rating of the Spartans being dumped in, you could dump in 300 Master Chiefs and you'd still fail because they can just glass the area.

What's more messed up with the Spartan - III's is that they were literally created to achieve the feats in combat the Spartan II's could, but were expected to die, and were thus augmented with a much higher pain tolerance and pure fucking animalistic survivability.
There's a great segment about it later on in the book, (I won't spoil) where a spartan - III literally has half of his torso vaporized off from getting hit, yet he still gets up to fight.

A large theme of this novel is the overall mindset ONI had toward Spartan IIIs. This is a shining example of classic military corner-cutting. ONI wanted Spartans, but they didn't want to pay out the massive price tag that Dr. Halsey managed to get for her Spartan IIs. So instead, with the "new" spartan program, they took children who were orphaned due to the Human-Covenant war; told them how they were going to be war heroes, shoved them into an accelerated training program, and equipped them with "experimental" budget equipment. Mjolner armor was well established, but at the cost of nearly an entire Human destroyer PER suit, ONI was having none of it. There is also the matter that ALL surviving Spartan IIs were issued their own personal AI who chose out their Spartan. ONI thus stuck the new Spartan III's in (experimental) semi-powered, crystalline gel-matrix, and open to the environment stealth suits. The first version of these suits (used on the mission in the video above) were far from perfect as the projected stealth field would more make you seem like a moving body of water rather than entirely transparent. This thereby made them nearly useless for such a mass mission as the stealth mode did not contribute to the mission beyond the first few minutes within the forested area and the armor itself was better designed for kinetic weapons, not plasma as the covenant use. It was later mentioned how once Tom and Lucy jumped into the water how their helmets were filling with water, which forced them to abandon their armor or risk drowning due to it's negative buoyancy and lack of environmental sealing.
Bottom line. ONI took one of their potentially greatest assets, pointed them in the direction of a MASSIVE problem... and threw a goddamned coupon in their faces and flipping them the bird.

The s3's were made for missions like that. They mass produced them for suicide missions. Which is also why they had weaker armor than the s2 they were trained with s2 battle data on the enemies but they were mainly meat for the grinder
