  • Beta Company, consisting of 300 Spartan-3s are dropped onto the surface of Pegasi-Delta to eliminate a Covenant refinery during operation "Torpedo". It is then no surprise that this would turn into one of the greatest loss of Spartans in a single battle to ever occur and somehow Ignis makes it worse.

    I read the book.
    Its a very sad book. Granted Ackerson did not do what Halsey did (kidnap over 100 6 and 7 year old kids)... But still, orphans of the same age. At least John and the other SPARTAN II's were husbanded for missions that they'd at least come back from due to the nature of their being limited in number... Kurt, Mendez and Ackerson knew these kids would most likely not survive their first mission. Like this one. This was Beta's first, and only, real mission as a company, excluding prior ops (including that of Cartwheel). Out of the 300 SPARTAN III's sent in, Tom and Lucy were the only survivors, rendering a 99% casualty rate of the mission, and essentially rendering Beta Company "Combat Ineffective".
    But unlike Ackerson, Kurt and Mendez were fighting to keep these boys and girls alive. Whereas Ackerson, like ONI and the UNSC, were under the tactical and strategic mood that their sacrifice, though horrid, achieved greater significant importance upon completion of their mission (such as this, Operation Torpedo).
    Ironically enough, some of the SIII's we know, including Kat, were produced directly from Onyx and the SIII program under Ackerson. Even Noble 6, who was also sidelined by Kurt for specialized duties.

    • @slate8409
      @slate8409 5 месяцев назад +3

      Ackerson was worse than Halsey ever was. ONI had to gaslight her into joining the program in the first place through presenting her with the Carver findings, and even after being brought in she had reservations about what they were doing. Only reason she didn't quit was because the alternatives were worse - both the escalation of the Insurrection and knowing that someone like Ackerson who cared nothing for the IIs would take over the program in her place. Even after the II project was technically closed and ended Halsey spent literal decades resurrecting and fixing the children who died or were crippled through failed augmentations - kids who ONI had written off as "acceptable losses", much like the IIIs. Halsey's a monster to be sure but not one of her own making, and a LOT of the blame she gets belongs at the feet of Parangosky and others like her within ONI's leadership.
      Problem is that certain authors who will not be named that have a habit of injecting personal politics into their books decided Halsey was going to be their villain and 343 Industries ran with it for years despite that directly contradicting other novels considered to be foundational lore for the entire expanded universe. Reading the older books generally does a lot to set the record straight on that.

    • @TheRisingSun56
      @TheRisingSun56 5 месяцев назад +5

      @@slate8409 The Original Spartan II program has some of the worst justifications for coming into existence, Carver Findings or not (in-universe the Carver Findings are some of the most threadbare doomer posting to ever exist and Halsey's the dumbest genius ever to buy into it) R/HaloStory has a couple of break downs about why the II program was the luckiest shot in the dark ever and had it been used on the insurrection as planned and gotten out like Hunt the Truth postulates, the UEG would not have survived it (and by rights should not have, this is a government that signed off of the kidnapping of the next generations of greats from the outer colonies and turned them into the ultimate kill squad to not actually solve the problem they were created to solve, the II's don't really help solve the issues of the insurrection.) The fact that the Covenant show up and justify the II program is the greatest luck out that ONI ever got in reasons for crimes against humanity. The III program doesn't have this problem at least immediately post-war, you can't over estimate how badly the UNSC was losing by the time Ackerson sells his soul to get his program started, as unlike the II program (roughly a 1 million+ dead at time of initiation) the III's have seen dozens of planets lost and nearly a billion+ dead with every method used to just cause a speed bump costing millions of military losses and entire battlegroups reduced to nothing but floating hulks, the UNSC is already trading lives for time in the most extreme ways possible and the III's are approved under the very real threat of extinction, using volunteers that have already lost everything and were likely to lose more (unlike the vapid specter of extinction raised by the Carver Findings, which by this point are absolute bullshit due to the external factors of an alien invasion.)
      Ackerson's decent is also pretty well covered in HaloStory, from a Col on the frontlines of the early years of the war all the way until his death at the very close of it. He sells his soul and his morals to try and buy humanity a chance and I respect him far far more than Halsey because as we get more looks into early war Halsey, we see more and more of her I'm smarter than you and I know it approach to ONI and military operations restrict the only useful asset she'd created by that point, restricting Spartan II deployments from extreme-risk and extreme-rewards to cake-walks and set requirements before deployment akin to a mother hen (which she is at that point, even more so then to her own daughter Miranda.)
      Halsey was a shitty mother and feeling guilty about it without doing anything about her own daughter and baby-daddy Keyes (Halsey maintains her arrogance right up until Red Flag is canceled and Reach falls) then proceeding to get millions killed indirectly when she got Battlegroup Omnicron slaughtered over Onyx (Lord Hood trusts her when she claims war winning technology's but she knows that Onyx is a shield world, it's not clarified whether she thinks she can come up with something in the month Earth has left or if she wanted convince the Battlegroup to abandon the fight but either way it damns her) when she knows her own daughter is still in the fight. She's a shitty person in general when she advocated retreating from the Outer Colonies to fortress worlds and writing off billions of people for the promise of weapons she never delivers in canon, think about that she SAYs she can provide the tools to fight the Covenant and the only thing she creates is an armor and shielding system that doesn't actually solve the problem of Covenant Space Dominance. Sgt Johnson scoffs at her and Adm Cole ignores her at that point because who does that, who writes off billions on a CHANCE that you by your lonesome can actually solve the problem and spoiler she doesn't.
      TLDR: The III program actually had justifications unlike the II's and Halsey regardless of if you use old or new canon is a callous bitch who grew morals late in the game and only for the children she ripped away from their families after realizing she could not in-fact live up to her own hype and was wrong anyways.

      @@TheRisingSun56 So we’re just going to gloss over Ackerson putting rivals and UNSC forces he didn’t like in harm’s way for purely petty and personal reasons? Or his straight up bigotry involving the IIs, who Hood threatened him with disciplinary action over? My man, I don’t care what Reddit has to say on the subject. I own all the wartime era books and I can definitively tell you your timeline is off. Halsey was conflicted from day one, she didn’t develop her conscience “late” if you go off her journal and the Eric Nylund books that paved the way for the entire EU. Did she make some bad calls? Yes. But that pales in comparison to Ackerson straight up trying to get people he doesn’t like killed solely so he can steal their funding… or worse, purely for vindictive reasons as the III program was in full swing by 2552. Worst that would happen with Halsey is she would avoid you. If Ackerson decided you were on his shit list you could expect live artillery rounds in your next training “exercise”, the kind of bullshit that could get you courtmartialed and tried for treason if uncovered.

    • @TheRisingSun56
      @TheRisingSun56 5 месяцев назад +4

      @@slate8409 I'm not defending Ackerson as by the time we meet him in Fall of Reach he's already began his slide but his III program justifications are far and away better than the II's if we're going to call using child soldiers justified (the war is going bad and is continuing to get worse by the day the Army of which Ackerson is the only member we had seen up to that point, would know on an institutional level) Halsey on the other by the time of Ghosts has regrown her conscious in the worst possible way sabotaging First Strike by pulling Kelly off the line, tricking Lord Hood into a Spartan and Battlegroup deployment during Earths last stand knowing that her daughter is still fighting. Like there are mistakes but nearly getting everyone in Sol killed and definitely getting everyone in Battlegroup Omnicron/Stalingrad killed is a hard sell using a conscious she finally acts on(I prefer grown because she never uses it prior to this aside from mother henning) basically right after Red Flag fails and First Strike is ramping up per the First Strike Novel, just feels like callous and writing off everyone else outside of her circle including her own family (Miranda is still fighting by First Strike and the beginning of Halo 2.)
      So yeah, even using the novels prior to Halo: Reach I'm incredibly cold on Halsey and the Spartan II program, even if the II's themselves were the greatest godsend the UNSC could have asked for (also incredibly badass in every depiction), for the wrong reasons.

      I thought so too the cloaking on it was neat, until I saw how much the shields fail and how thin the plating is compared to the Mjolnir armor in the books. I still feel like if Kurt took his old Spartan II armor over the SPI in the book he might've actually been able to tank the fatal hit and go toe to toe with the hunter that absolutely messed up his solar plexus when it smashed him with it's shield. The whole instance with one of the Blue team member Spartan's tackling it off the hilltop and fighting it hand to hand to save him after that might've been prevented if he did.

One of their augmentations would override their sensibilities in favor of heightened aggression. So instead of repositioning or retreating as a spartan II would they may elect to charge or hold their ground. Really great book highly recommend a read if anyone hasn't.

    Spartan 3s with their SPI Armor are so underrated in my opinion, despite what many people think the majority of Spartan 3s used Semi-Powered Infiltration Armor (SPI Armor) which is not as durable or as advanced as the Mjolnir Armor system that Spartan 2s had but SPI Armor was considered to be at least above average compared to most other armor systems that most UNSC soldiers had. Spartan 3s like seen in Noble Team in Halo Reach are one of the few Spartan 3s that got to use a proper Mjolnir Armor but majority of S3 used SPI

    At 1135, the 300 SPARTAN-IIIs of Beta Company landed on Pegasi Delta via Long range stealth orbital drop pods. Nine SPARTANs died immediately, either killed on impact or by Covenant forces. Initial resistance was light, as the Covenant had not yet realized how large the attacking force was. Soon, however, Covenant Seraphs began making strafing runs, prompting the hiding SPARTANs to abandon their stealth and rush to the factory for safety. As more Seraphs appeared, a few SPARTANs attempted to hold them back with missile launchers, and succeeded in destroying two, forcing the remaining Seraphs to cancel their runs.
    The Seraphs began bombing the SPARTANs, killing dozens of them. Thousands of Sangheili and Kig-Yar joined the defense. In response, the surviving SPARTANs charged, their speed and reflexes helping them kill hundreds of Covenant soldiers in a brief matter of time.
    Suddenly, seven Covenant cruisers were revealed, immediately deploying thousands of reinforcements. Half of the survivors of Beta Company turned to face the new threat in an attempt to buy time for their fellow soldiers. Team Foxtrot rushed to the factory. Adam-B004 was mortally wounded, but stayed back to hold off the Covenant forces so his team could rush ahead. When the remaining members arrived, they immediately began to set explosive charges on the core. Min-B174 was setting his timer when an electromagnetic field triggered his charge, vaporizing him.
    The last two members of Team Foxtrot, Tom-B292 and Lucy-B091, then jumped off a cliff and into the ocean to escape from the explosion of the core. The two nearly drowned, but managed to swim ashore, where they found that everything else had been vaporized, including the cruisers. Eventually, they made it to a waiting Black Cat-class sub-prowler, and were extracted from the planet.
