When you hear an old Zeppelin track you realize how relatively safe and sterile some of the new music is. Back then, the sexuality was out front and center. There was something danger-loving about it. Every new album was expected to sound different than the previous album. The young people in Britain were complete fanatics about old American blues. They electrified the sound and turned it way up. A lot of American kids in the late 60's had no idea who Muddy Waters or Willie Dixon were until they heard Led Zeppelin. It's amazing to think that Led Zeppelin's first 2 albums were both released in1969.

jonnno 243 Yes, the bassline sets it up. But the riff is greatly strengthened by Page's guitar superimposed over the bass notes, and driven by Page varying those chords throughout the song to keep it fresh and build up the excitement. It's not as simple and repetitive as it sounds to a casual ear.

Jamal, thanks for the reactions! By the way, when we were younger and had no video and or musical channels other than AM and some fledgling FM stations, we had to wait for albums go on sale, hold listening parties and sing along with the lyrics and try to imagine what the artist were trying to convey to us the fans! It was called using our imaginations.... Imagine that......
Keep up the reactions... You should of been around in the 60's!

Hi Judy...yea, this was done purposely and not with reverb, instead the "Sound Engineer" forced the sound to switch channels back and forth. This is what was called "Acid Rock" or "Psychedelic Rock." You would ingest some psychedelics, (Acid), wait for it to hit you and promptly throw on your headphones, crank it up and... and... and you were gone, baby! Kids, having fun. No more, no less. I had a blast...Later.

Legend has it, that huge hair style started by accident in the kitchen of Phil Lynott's (lead singer of Thin Lizzy) Mother. She ran a B&B in London around the time of the 70's and 80's frequented by lots of musicians like Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, David Bowie etc. The band members were getting ready to go on a Live TV appearance and Philomena said "Have you washed your hair and ironed your clothes? You cant go on TV looking like that!' So she made them remove their clothes and get them ironed and 1 by 1 washed their hair in the kitchen sink using whatever soap was laying around. They didnt have time to dry and brush their hair so by the time they got on stage it was . . .MASSIVE and frizzy! LOL They felt RIDICULOUS, but of course they are rock stars so the fans thought "Wow I want hair like that too" thinking that was their new style ROFLMAO Totally true legit story, check out Philomena Lynotts book for more :)

This song was Led Zeppelin's breakthrough hit off their 2nd album "Led Zeppelin II" released in December, 1969. It reached #4 on the billboard charts in early 1970, despite the fact metal songs----at this time when AM radio dominated---did not often find their way on mainstream pop radio. It remains their highest charting song.

Everyone sat down, Page came out and sat down, others walked off, he played by himself for 1hr.,we had gone up in stands which were totally empty. Proceeded to watch the last 2hrs. sitting every other seat, sipping, smoking and listening to some incredible music! A 75 year old loud music lover. Carry on, you get it brother !!!
