In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, NPR Music presents four very special Tiny Desk (home) concerts recorded especially for this week.

When we invited Brazilian vocalist Bebel Gilberto to do a Tiny Desk (home) concert, we had no idea her home would have a spectacular view of speed boats gliding across the bay in Rio de Janeiro just beneath historic Sugarloaf Mountain. But those iconic sights are in fact the perfect visual backdrop for Brazilian music, and Gilberto's in particular.
Bebel Gilberto is, of course, the daughter of one of the creators of bossa nova, João Gilberto. But as she slinks into the subtle electronic samba of "Cliché," from her new album Agora, it becomes clear why she is now a standard bearer of Brazilian music. During this concert, she is accompanied by Chico Brown, the son of famed musician Carlinhos Brown and grandson of the legendary Chico Buarque.
You can feel the presence of all of that Brazilian musical royalty in one of Bebel Gilberto's most popular songs, the closing "Aganjú."

I don’t speak Portuguese, but I love a lot of Brazilian music . Most I really like is from the 60s - 70s , but I’ve had a soft spot in my heart for Bebel Gilberto since I first grabbed Tanto Tempo on a whim . Beautiful voice !!!
That's also where I first heard her, though I also guessed she was related to Astrud and João. Of course, she was and she was fantastic.
We have new singers in Brazilian music who are great too! Some recommendations: Tiago Iorc, Sandy, AnaVitória, 5 a seco, among other things...
@@02aninha thanks Ana !! I will check these artists out . I will try to be as unbiased as possible even though most of my favorite musicians came out of the 70s regardless of region . That was just a time that was great for music in my opinion .
It doesn't hurt that Portuguese may be the most pleasant sounding language on the planet

I thought I was the coolest kid on the planet listening to Bebel in the early 2000s. Tanto Tempo is timeless, as is her voice.

Just a small correction in description: Actually, the mountain behind her is not Sugar Loaf but the Dois Irmãos (two Brothers) mountain, the one you see at Ipanema beach (as eveyone might know this one) :D
Her apartment is in the Lagoa neighborhood, right in the center of Rio de Janeiro south zone.

It's a "historic" mountain for "Hispanic Heritage".
In the early 2000s attended her concert in Zellerbach Hall, Berkeley, CA. It was absolutely amazing, the best concert I ever attended. I'll never forget it. That voice!!!

About that "In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month": Brazilians are Latinos, yes, but not Hispanic. Latino is a broader term.

I was gonna say this. But honestly, I'm not mad at it. Music is universal. Technically, us Filipinos should be Hispanic too, but we're not included. Again, I'm not mad. I love all peoples! And all musics!
"Hispanic" is also a problematic term as it emphasizes European heritage when a substantial Latin population has indigenous and African heritage. So I'm surprised NPR chose to use it.

Back in 2001 I bought the Tampo Tempo Remixes not knowing while exploring as a young adult genres I had never listened to before. Today I discovered the João Gilberto - Amoroso album while RUclips surfing. His music was so incredible. If finally struck me to see if he's related to Bebel. Lo and behold the full circle. Life is a blessing.
