      @@AustenSummers because it's true. A lot of live performances sound like trash in a tin can on RUclips. The sound engineers make or break a live recording.

    There’s a great bit at around 18 minutes where the pianist is playing a mad solo but there’s a rest: but his hands keep twitching with eagerness to hit the next note. Fabulous!

    Absolutely beautiful! This is my first time coming across Nubya and I have never been happier; that's the great thing about Tiny Desk it's a constant plug. I've literally listened to this 6 times in a row and it's getting me through my assignments. It feels like my eardrums are getting a massage.

      The two singers and keyboard player are great musicians as well in their own right. Check out Kokoroko Afrobeat Collective: Colonial Mentality. Look it up here on youtube. Cassie Kinoshi (the singer in white) is an alto sax player and has a dope solo.

    Every time I come back this tiny desk it reminds me of something I read where it stated that music originated as a way for us to connect and communicate with the earth/spirit. listening to this makes me feel as if i was invited to a birthday party for the universe and this was the music being played

    I've flirted with listening to jazz a few times over many decades, but these past 5 years have seen a huge amount of tasteful talent emerge, particularly from London. It's a golden age, no less.

    This whole thing is pure class. big ups to NPR for featuring such a diverse range of music and putting jazz right next to pop. Also it's so cool to see singers trading bars like that. Nubya is a what jazz music needs.

      @@cotinaspann9475 Richie Seivwrigh and Cassie Kinoshi as well - they are part of KOKOROKO, and Kinoshi is the band leader of SEED Ensemble, who released a great album last year. Plus, Nubya released an album with Kinoshi and others as NÉRIJA back then, too.

      I'm glad you enjoy it. Just want to mention that this drumming style is like 50% of reggae dub music, with the other 50% being bass. It's very common in this genre. The jazzy parts reminds me of the style of Alfa Mist, check that out if you haven't.

    I'm glued to the drummer man! You can tell he's really talking to both of them. Kinda teasing and taunting them sometimes, inviting them to play with him. I love it man. The faces he makes are awesome.
    And that bass line is so silky smooth and captivating at all times. Really holding everything together like being enveloped in a giant soft warm blanket that vibrates.

    I love this reggae jazz feel. I love playing my tenor sax. It’s definitely a feel of connection 💛. I love all saxophones, but the tenor is definitely my favorite.

    I cant get enough o these performers! I had Tickets to see Kokoroko in NYC but the had issues at immigration and couldn't make the gig. Now i will travel anywhere to see them or Nubya

    More amazing young musicians! I hear real heritage in Nubya’s sound. The Shorter influence is there but she’s got her own commanding, deep saxophone voice. I’m so glad I found this!

    It's all about that bass! Who is with me starting at 11:37 where we go on a magical ride on the bass line descending into pure perfection kicking off into space for the rest of the band!, especially the sax booster rocket launch into infinity and beyond. Talk about setting the table. Will have to invite to dinner next time.

    Me: cannot stop noticing that the plant does not swing in time with music except for at 11:35 - then I'm wondering..if the plant is already moving when they get in there, aren't they then vibing with the plant? Okay. Now it all makes sense. Thanks for the content. :-)

      do NOT make me post im on a boat clips ha ha ha
      but that only reinforces my point that they're vibing around the plant not the plant vibing with them so they won't always match everything exactly because they're subconsciously pulling visual meter off the plant in their peripheral vision as it's the only furnishing moving on its own, at least from the frame's perspective lol

    Just amazing really ... Saw Nubya Live last year and couldn't get enough of her and her whole band. I love it when Joe gets in his trance it's like the music is literally battling to get out of his body to bless us all 🙏 it was so nice that I had to go grab my headphones and play the whole thing again to vibe in immersion 🙌🙌🙌
