    There's a fan theory that when Shaun and his friends run into the identical party of survivors lead by his old friend, the other group is actually the cast of the serious, higher-budget zombie movie taking place at the same time. :)

    So of course everyone's going to recommend Hot Fuzz and The World's End (rightly so) but the series Spaced doesn't get any love from reactors, which is odd, because it's what Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright did before Shaun of the Dead, and is a hilarious cult classic series of two 7 episode seasons. Maybe Spaced will get a spot in the polls after the Cornetto trilogy?

    Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes who plays Yvonne who saves the day at the end co-wrote and starred a UK comedy series called 'Spaced' directed by Edgar Wright. One episode featured Simon Pegg's character hallucinating after playing Resident Evil 2. It was this episode that inspired him to write this. A lot of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced who heeded the call on a Fan Newsgroup to come and play roles for free in order to keep in budget.

    Such a brilliantly constructed film. All the foreshadowing, setup, and payoff. Like how EVERY detail in that first walk to the corner shop is beat-for-beat reflected later once the zombie apocalypse has started. Kid's football is bloody, jogger is hauling ass, windshield the guy was washing is now smashed, the neighbor leaving his apartment is now lying dead on the doormat, etc. Hot Fuzz is also great, but a little bit less "horror."

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 года назад +1

      Eh, Hot Fuzz is pretty horror. Crime horror, but horror. Lower body count than here, true, but they still go for it in some of the scenes. I certainly would agree that it's not more horror than Sean.

    Something to watch for in the entire Cornetto trilogy is the fact that they're all deconstructions of various genres. About half or so of the movie plays with the tropes and foibles, and the other half is all those tropes and foibles done right. It's insanely impressive, like watching someone disassemble and reassemble an F1 motor and then drive it to the chequered flag. Wright et al are next level.
    Sean's tall room-mate is the inimitable Peter Seranfinowicz, who was Andy's rich friend in the London episode of Parks & Rec, and, more recently, one of the best parts of the sadly-cancelled reboot of The Tick, which is absolutely worth seeing.

    As a side note, "We are coming to get you, Barbara" is the best line in the movie! Wonderful homage! You can really see why this was Romero's favourate zombie movie that he didn't make.

      It's insane to think that Romero basically invented everything we think of for modern zombies. Slow-moving, flesh-craving, having to destroy the brain; all of it from one guy. Everyone knows what a zombie is now, but nobody did (in that sense) before Romero made it so. He is to zombies what Bram Stoker is to vampires.

    If you're looking for something in the British comedy tradition of Python, "That Mitchell and Webb Look", written by and starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, is a great sketch series. Got Olivia Coleman in it too, who you may remember from "The Queen". M&W's comedy show with a more traditional narrative is called "Peep Show", and is fabulous.

    Lots of people here recommending 'Spaced' (TV series), another British TV series I'd recommend is 'Big Train', also featuring Simon Pegg - it's a surreal sketch show and very funny. It was written by the same team who wrote 'Father Ted', another brilliant show.

    I might suggest watching a few staple action movies before seeing their next movie, Hot Fuzz. It's not required but it gives so many great moments of humor and context seeing them reference them.

    I heard from Shanelle in her reactions that small independent movies often use long tracking shots because it is less expensive. they don’t have to take time to move the camera and set up the next shot which can sometimes take hours.

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 года назад +1

      I suppose that's possible, but long tracking shots are also super difficult and often require many more takes than shorter shots, as there's so much more that can go wrong. You have to arrange and light and control a much larger area, as well, and much more intricately, as you're only going to have the one angle from which to show your audience what they need to see. If it were just a case of tracking shots being easier, you'd expect to see a lot more of them, especially in formats with lower budgets like TV shows.
      Long shots are also really hard on the cameraperson, because they've got to hold the weight of the equipment while moving correctly for a very long time, and camera rigs can easily top 80 not-perfectly-balanced lbs. I recall Shanelle (presuming we're speaking of Riccio, yes?) mentioning that for one particular long tracking shot (can't recall which), the camera operator had to train for 6 months to be able to pull it off. The scene was specifically left until late in the shooting schedule to accommodate the conditioning.

    Yes, dogs can look up but their necks do not have the same range of motion as ours so they won't be looking straight up, however if you ask a dog to sit and look up at a treat then you can see that they can look up at you.

    Favourite British comedy movies that come to mind:
    Brazil (1985)
    Withnail & I (1987)
    A Fish Called Wanda (1988)
    In Bruges (2008)
    Four Lions (2010)
    Lots of great horror-comedies over the years too:
    An American Werewolf in London (1981)
    Eating Raoul (1982)
    Evil Dead 2 (1987)
    Society (1989)
    Jennifer's Body (2009)
    for example
    Also: Sightseers (2012) and Prevenge (2016) - two British horror comedies, fulfilling all the criteria at once

    So glad that you appreciated the dark humor and the absurdity of how these people decided to cope (and failed to cope) with a zombie disaster.
    For another Simon Pegg comedy try Paul (2011) His spin on E.T. The Extraterrestrial. Two fanboys try and assist an alien escaped from a US government holding facility.
    Or for a classic British comedy (if you can get it) try Ladykillers (1955) The 2004 remake missed the point of the original. Some familiar faces in the 1955 version. Enjoy!

      Simon Pegg also wrote the 3rd JJ Abrams Trek, and it's far and away the best one. It's the most "Trek" of any of those films, too, as Pegg is a huge fan (he also plays Scotty in the whole series).

About ten minutes in, I was laughing so hard I had to pause it and call dad in. Second time around we had to coax mom into sitting it and watching it with us.
