Karen Straughan is a self-styled "anti-feminist" and spokesperson for the group Men's Rights Edmonton. She has a popular blog (owningyourshit....) and RUclips channel ( / girlwriteswhat ) where she talks about a range of gender-related issues, in particular fathers' rights and domestic violence against men.
In this clip, Straughan and Cenk Uygur debate the merits of divorce settlements that favor wives over husbands and whether the feminist movement deserves credit for winning women the right to vote.

People get confused about this all the time, but being an antifeminist traditionalist who wishes for the "good old days" of the male headed family and stay at home wife with all the chivalry, male obligation and duty, expected self-sacrifice for men while tolerating the wife being a lazy dumb cow, "manning up" and bottling up your emotions and not expressing them other than anger and aggression doesn't make you pro-male. Go watch some of her stuff and she will teach you that, contrary to popular opinion, traditionnalist ways of living, around the world, were, and still are, never 100% in favor of the men but she never advocates for us to go back to those times.

Wow. Cenk, you really made an ass of yourself here. First of all, feminism came AFTER women's rights activism. AFTER the right to vote was passed. After that vote was passed, women's rights activism ended in large part due to the fact that it had already achieved all it set out to do.
Women's right activism is not feminism. Activism =/= Ideology. Feminism is an ideology, not a vehicle for activism. Activism achieves it's goals and then disappears until those goals are undone. Ideology exists to continue existing; it exists to propagate.
The problem with an ideology born of activism is that it needs to justify it's existence by creating problems that do not exist. Things like #manspreading #mansplaining #manslamming , things like Anita Sarkeesians entire career and articles asking about wether or not "fart is rape." These are things that are not women's rights issues. These are not even issues. They are justifications to keep feminism alive because as an ideology, it does not care wether or not it achieves it's goals. All it cares about is making sure the ideology remains relevant. They will make up whatever problem they want to justify it.
This is why I am not a feminist. I'm not a meninist. I'm a human rights advocate. Plain and simple. No ideology. No extremism. Just rights. Cenk sounds like O'Reilly here. It's uncanny. I can't in good conscience stay subscribed knowing that this is how you pursue conversations with those who disagree with you. This isn't a discussion. This is just unprofessional.

In the past, I did so, because I thought it simply meant that you believe men and women should have equal rights in society, and don't get me wrong, to a lot of people that's what they believe it means. However, recently it seems to be more about hating men than anything else. I also grow weary of the whiny drama-queens screaming about the "sexist movie/music/video game industry", "the patriarchy", and the boundless hypocrisy the more radical feminists show. How is it in any way okay to make "#Killallmen" into a joke, when you scream misogyny if I so much as utter the word "cunt" or "bitch", regardless of the circumstance?

We are defined by our actions, and not our words. Feminsm has nothing to do with equal rights. Hell, it doesn't even propagate equal rights for women. It's a misandric cult that creates, and propagates misinformation to sustain itself.
Gene Starwind I agree, at least partly. It depends on what type of feminist we're talking about. There ARE plenty of very smart feminists out there who actually stand for true equality. But yes, misandry has slowly become a new branch of feminism, and misinformation is frequently spread around to enforce a picture of society that doesn't really exist. The types of feminists who support that type of movement would be the radical feminists, or the feminists who just agree because they're too stupid to actually look into the matter themselves.

deenman23 look, there was a system in the past that denied women rights in most of the world since the beginning of known history. Womans rights became an issue less then 100 years ago, and the way I see it, we are pretty much at equality now (which I find impressive. but there was a balance before and when womans right became an issue, it broke it, so you should except an acclimatisation period when radicals come out and shout out stupid stuff. I like to think that this will balance out eventually. But for that you need to have a proper discussion, not a shouting match.

Is this fair? no. should it be done? no. But is it specifically sexist? I don't believe so.
As a lifeguard we go through a race version of this: statistically more immigrants die of drowning in Québec because thy don't know how to swim. 94% learn how to swim at a very young age, and as lifeguards we tend to pay more attention to the immigrant looking kids. Its a stereotype, not a racism issue.

karen straughan I dunno, maybe. Personally, I disagree with Pakman on this issue. But I found that entire interview a lot more interesting than the 4:21 min featured here. If you were to appear on Pakman's show again, I would watch. I think Cenk probably could have picked a better part of the interview to promote. Unless his intention was to amuse people as he did you. :)

What's she's saying is that it was believed that the right to vote was conditional, and it was! However the suffragette movement came along and achieved the right to vote minus the conditionals. Feminism got it wrong here, they weren't achieving equality. Karen isn't anti rights. Feminists are the ones so unreasonable, you demonstrate that by not letting her get her reasoning out.

It wasn't a gender issue, it was a conditional issue that made it appear to be. For example, property owners could vote (most property owners were men), military could vote (most military were men). The conditionals were upon showing you were somehow indentured to the state. I would suggest watching the full interview, but I understand it was difficult for her to get out the points when that oaf is shouting over them.
It's a case of men can vote if drafted, and women can vote just because. This is still true today.
dffykvn Sure, those all sound like great victories. They were never even brought those up though. However, these aren't the battles being fought today. Lots of things have been changed for the betterment of women who found themselves in hardship. This isn't always a fight for equality though. Equality means equal hardship, feminism will not approach an issue in order to achieve parity on hardship or have to face the same concessions that men have had to for the same privilege. Instead they produce propaganda to ensure most people don't recognise that men face it, or are unable to face it, or are owing it to women.
There's one I just spoke about, suffrage.
I'm not sure what you mean when you talk about equal pay and reproductive rights. Do you know that men have no reproductive rights?

I like Karen Straughan quite a bit. She is the kind of woman I respect the most; strong, independent minded, responsible, and kind hearted. I have found her to be among the most salient, and most sympathetic voices within the men's rights movement.
I think that those who really believe in equality, and really believe that feminism is about equality, have an obligation to hear and try to understand those who are speaking about men's struggles.

I clicked on this video as I was expecting a rational debate between Cenk and Karen. Instead I hear Cenk yelling and spewing out the "you should thank me" all the time, not letting Karen speak up. And why is this interview so short? A lot seems to have been cut out, in contrary to other interviews TYT has done (lasting 20-40 minutes). Is Cenk hiding vital parts or something?

***** It's not about if voting is effective or not. It's about having the RIGHT to vote! Having the RIGHT to vote is freedom to choose. Freedom to choose means that YOU can't stop someone else from partaking in an activity just because you think it's "ineffective".
So even though Cenk promotes WolfPack he himself still votes. He also believes that you have the RIGHT to vote or NOT vote if you choose despite the "ineffectiveness." So I agree with Malik that voting is important. Even if it was hazardous to our health the freedom to do it, in turn, makes us a FREE.

***** Don't make assumptions about people. I once thought that feminism did not exist before the 1960's and thought that the suffragettes were just a bunch of conservative women. This was based off my limited knowledge and had nothing to do with comfort.
Because it is a lie what Cenk was claiming. He was saying women never had any rights. False. He claimed women didn't have any say. False. Shouting over Karen that she should just shut up and be thankful to the suffragettes even though women would have got the right to vote without any antics or ideology from these people just showed that he was unable to think critically and did not want to deal with any historical realities. He wanted to just close his ears and ignore what he was hearing. Pretty standard stuff when dealing with people like him, you end up at a point where they refuse to question their beliefs and they close up.

I was surprised to see Karen Straughn being interviewed on TYT. I clicked and noticed that the video was extremely disliked. My first thought was "wow, guess lots of the the TYT audience are anti-MRA." Then I watched you throw a fuck-headed snit, Cenk. That wasn't just a bad piece of journalism. That was rude, offensive and obnoxious. I am literally half an inch away from unsubscribing. You essentially pulled a Bill O'Riley here. You couldn't argue your points, so you shut her off.
I don't necessarily agree with MRA's or Straughan on everything. But she was raising 2 points, that you couldn't argue against in a civil fashion so you ended up treating her like she was a lunatic.
1, Men=/=evil oppressors. Historically speaking, there is more nuance there.
2, Feminism often goes overboard as it separates rights from obligations.

Sitting through the whole interview, Cenk's behavior was...inexcusable. He should apologize, and give Straughan another chance to be interviewed, but by someone like Idarola (who is a feminist, and would probably be able to argue his points) or even Ana, who would probably be able to stay professional and at least disagree respectfully.

i am sorry Cenk but what she's saying is true, the concept of universal male voting that came after the french revolution was intrinsic with military service, any people that couldn't be drafter for military services (the crippled for example) had no right to vote.
