    Hey everyone thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on the two images. It is super cool to see your perspectives. Its quite an even split on people who enjoy the moody image vs the sun image. I think I will try to go back and process the images a bit more and include both on my site. :) If you enjoyed the video make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't, thanks again!

    I love the softness of this stream in the foreground of the darker image, but also the warm light in the midground catches me. Well, it's hard to say, but if I had to choose one, maybe I'd also go for the dark, moody one...

    if can say, my thought would be that the non sunlight version has a more serene and quiet tone. while on the sunlight version, if you cropped the bottom a bit, the clutter would go away and the eye would be drawn to the mountain at the back, enhancing the image with the colourful splendor, creating a vibrant and dynamic scenery

    Another informative and enjoyable clip. Of the two images, I preferred the darker/first/right-hand/moody one because the camera was located just a little higher so that the road in the distance carried on the task of leading the eye through the picture towards the island. I'd love to visit the Islands - not so much as I'd like to see Iceland, though - it looks to be a spectacular location. But I wouldn't have the heart to go during the time they harvest the pilot wales (if they still do that).

    Thank you for the video, really like your way of thinking and interacting on your video. They both have their pros and cons, but to me the image with the LIGHT in the middle ground is far more interesting. It is primarily because the light is only on the right mountain bluff, leaving the left mountain bluff in shadow, giving the impression of time and motion, light and dark,. Far more interesting than if the scene were entirely dark (the first image), or entirely light. Keep up the good work!

    Hey just found your channel via a mention from Adam Gibbs. Loved this comparison of the 2 days, same comp. I would probably have been seduced by the 2nd day’s light and chosen that were they my images, but looking st them objectively I totally agree that the first is cleaner and more cohesive without the midground light. Great call. (Of course you could always cheat and take some of the 2nd-day light for the background of the 1st-day image, I’d be curious about that.) but all in all I think you made the right call. Great lesson.

    The first valley-to-sea image has more brood, and presents cleaner visual design. All that said, I would prefer to visually navigate the interesting layers of the second (with sunlight) shot, IF the foreground rock in the stream didn't conjure a childhood scare involving a "Creepy" comic. So having seen the second image, the first feels quite flat. Though I want the second image to draw me into the picture and it doesn't quite do that. • @allandavies1187
    @allandavies1187 4 года назад

    Hello Michael, I prefer the second longer exposure as the movement and the shapes of the water is better. On the left-hand side top of the Rule of Thirds, there is a little island connected to the mainland. For me, I would have liked you to have stepped a pace to the right and create separation between these objects. Stunning location and scene however....

    • @MichaelShainblum
      @MichaelShainblum  4 года назад +1

      What you are purposing would not work compositionally. Sure you would get separation of that tiny island, but at the cost of completely losing any interest in this photo. You would lose the stream, which is a main element in the image and just be shooting a patch of grass, you would also loose the symmetry in this composition. I am all for as much simplification in a photo as possible, but you really have to pick and choose your battles when it comes to composition. Compromises need to be made sometimes, in order to get the shot. Sometimes fixing one minor element, creates a whole set of bigger problems.

    • @allandavies1187
      @allandavies1187 4 года назад

      @@MichaelShainblum It would be the same composition with the exception of moving half-a-pace to the right. Once you see that little island touching the side of the hill, I can not take my eyes off it. It would be a simple and minor movement to correct this...

    Better late than never : first of all, that last timelapse was also my favorite part of the video, a lot going on between the rain going towards us and the clouds playing with the top of that mountain. I really am becoming more and more passionnate about timelapse, I feel like it can communicate sometimes better than a photograph the spirit of a place. Specially the weather of the Faroes. (Can I ask you what you used at the waterfall for that jib timelapse ?)
    About the two images : the first one feels a little bit too edited to my taste, mostly because of the color cast. I prefer the natural tones of the second one. I think what would have been best is no sun on the waterfall and just spots of sun like you had on the middle ground. But you can't have it all :)

      I think the differences in tonality would be a bit of a problem. But I also just for myself personally would not blend images from multiple days together. I do not have any problem if other photographers want to do that for their own work. But its just not something I would do for my own.

      @@MichaelShainblum fair point. I think that when you blend only the highlight in, the image will be really popping!
      Anyway, if I have to pick one, I would take the first, because of the foreground

      @@EvilNeedle90 I think I might have an even longer exposure from day two I can play with, maybe that one will end up being the final image for my site.

    Overcast is better to my eye.... lighting draws me to a more appealing area of the scene.
