  • Many ebike riders are suffering with their bikes just turning off for no reason right in the middle of a ride, I look at possible reasons that this might be happening.

Manufacturers promote all the tech but never state IP ratings, nor do they consider this in the design. I would say that bike has been designed for a desert, very poor.

Considering the price of most e-bikes ,manufacturers should be taken to task regarding the selling of them in the uk with such p##s poor water ingress protection.
The connectors they use are not even fit for purpose 😡

My husqvarna had these random shut downs, particularly on bumpy descends. I found out it there was some play on battery (and some rattle on descends). Just moved the upper battery mount a couple milimiters down and battery was more tight. Never had the issue again for the last 2 years.

Always seems a really bad design or decision to put poorly sealed connectors and motors right where most of the water hits a bike, and then be surprised when it plays up .
This puts me off throwing a large amount of money at an Ebike for the time being.

  • @nigel22347

Surely that's not correct? It's like replacing the wiring harness on a car when a connector is the only fault? Or replacing 4 tyres on a car when only 1 has a puncture.

On that model (I have one), it’s easy to keep the moisture out by putting electrical tape along the 4 edges of the battery cover where it touches the frame (on the outside 😅) and continuing a few cm more along the wee gap between the motor and the frame. Now, it’s really quick and easy to do once you’ve done it a couple of times. It looks terrible. It shouldn’t need to be done. But after 3000 km of 4 season riding in Yorkshire’s best slop (Wharny and all the rest), the inside of the frame still looks brand new and I never have any visible moisture (or issues with moisture). The wee holes by the steerer tube for the cables (x3) somehow don’t let water in even in Yorkshire tornadoes 🤔 Anyway, my point? Well, moving beyond the question of ‘why should this be necessary?’, I have zero electrical issues with this awesome do it all e-bike (just back from Revs today 🎉).

i got 4k miles last 2 year on a bosch motor, 3k of those last 8 months, and I live on the Oregon coast. Makes me wonder what people are doing to get water past the seals. The diamondback union 2 has a nice case built for the motor though, I check the bearings last week and they look and feel like new. I think some people are either using pressure washers, or not coving their motor when its on the back of their car in a heavy rain. I don't own a car so that never is a problem for me.

Well, how often will someone post that everything is working fine? Or about a service of a totally fine bike? E-bikes have more ways to break down than bio-bikes but this doesn’t mean that they aren’t reliable.
My main problem with eBikes is that most, except for some road or gravel eBikes, are designed for permanent motor use but I want a light bike which can give me some support when I want it and not all the time. This means less support and a small battery but that’s okay for me.

Hi Simon, double check your crank arm bolts for tightness and the chainring/ chain guard for free running and side to side play on the crank arms, the motor spins at least 20 full revolutions for your 1 rotation of the crank arm. If nothing seems out of place book it in to your dealer

Gday mate great video 👍👍 , genuine questions here - is a bicycle mechanic is it s registered trade and you have to do a 4-5 year apprenticeship?
Since e-bikes are relatively new largely, what training/schooling have you or majority of bike mechanics done on electric motors / auto electronics?
Do the motor manufacturers give all bike mechanics schooling on these motors & tech involved?
I myself am a qualified motorcycle mechanic and we used to do all electrical diagnostic in house and only sent components that need re wiring to a specialist motorcycle auto electrician!
I personally don’t ride e-bikes but I have a lot of mates that do and from what problems I’ve seen the shops are just replacing components, not repairing or correctly diagnosing !
You’ve probably guest what I’m getting at , is that the massive influx of e-bikes and tech involved are the bike mechanics qualified/ had schooling and are they the best option to repair / diagnose e-bike problems or should my mates just find a quality auto electrician/ tech as surely there’s a massive call for this ?? Cheers 🍻 from Oz

    • @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic
      @TheYorkshireBikeMechanic  Месяц назад +1

Hi, thanks for your questions. I will answer them in order.
There a 3 levels of certification, they are a recognised body called Cytech. A fully trained mechanic would hold Cytech 3. Its normally done over 2 years.
Companies like Bosch Brose and Shimano who are the main motor providers hold training sessions either on line or at one of their premises. You have to be a registered dealer to be able to use their diagnostic software, work under their warranty schemes and receive support. Shimano you can get their software by download, you dont need to be a dealer to use but get get warranty work and parts you do. again getting new components either to sell to the public at a trade price you need to be trade.
Motor repair is a speciality job and not many do it as they are very tricky to repair and easy to damage when working on them..
      Dave

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic thanks for your honest response mate 👍, much appreciated 😎. It just really annoys me this throw away society & these motor companies not making electrical components , gears & all other parts readily available is just ludicrous ! No wonder the price is rediculously high on e-bikes as clearly the motor manufacturers are /have worked all the warranty claim costs into the reatail price ! God help people once there out of warranty 🤬👎 Cheers 🍻 Mick

Rule 1 sell your EMTB before the warranty runs out, they will empty your wallet quicker than a Barcelona pick pocket. True EMTB ownership cost is about £500 to £600 per year depending on mileage, taking into account servicing, depreciation and faults / breakages. Can’t believe the world got sucked in to this fad.
