  • How to diagnose a faulty ebike, This bike is dead as a dodo, whats involved with tryiong to find out why and what can be done.
Dont forget that this is a rare problem when you take into account how many Bosch powered bikes that are our there.
If you are an ebike motor specialist I would love to hear your comments on if you think you could fix these issues and what success you have.

How about starting by spraying contact cleaner on the connector. Then as the PCB responds to diagnostic normally, the controller is probably not dead, then it's just a wiring issue. Probably checking the soldering of the connector would solve this.

Top diagnostic report and accessing the problem dave, I work on cars and run a diagnostic report on every car i touch before I remove anything for insurance purposes, it alone can take up to 20 mins on expensive Mercedes. But without the firmware your trying new components like you did, which is impossible on numerous vehicles, good to see you have new bosch parts at the workshop you can change, do you have shimano new parts too? And brose, you definitely need brose if you get my drift!

When this happens om the older power tubes with the green leds fit the battery back to bike and power it on from the battery button itself it should over ride the fault in 90% of cases! Seen people doing this a few time's with the older non smart system! A very important step that has not been done here that could save alot time and money!

I would have cleaned all the connectors on the cables and ports on the motor with contact cleaner. Since its already out of warranty I would open the motor up and look at the circuit board inside to see if water / mud got in there and clean it. A lot of times the board can short or be rendered inoperable due to mud contamination from use or high pressure cleaning.

I thought the same. If water has ingressed, then pcb corrosion could be there. It could be as simple as reflowing the solder at the rear of the pcb socket pins. It's obviously talking to the software. I would check the mosfets and any other components for signs of damage

I've just had my gen 4 fail after 3 1/2 years and 5.5k miles of mainly off road trails and being carefully ridden where water was concerned IE no riding thru very deep puddles or stream crossings swamping the motor altho it's been ridden a lot in the lakes on wet shitty days and wet trails , no power washing and careful cleaning, with a hose and brushes etc the fault was it just kept turning on for a few seconds and then not recognising the battery and turning off within a few seconds , I checked all continuity of the wiring and tried a known purion plugged directly into the drive unit eliminating the kiox i have on , I have two batteries available so i tried the second battery too, and even with the purion plugged into the drive unit and pressing the battery indicator it wouldn't wake the unit up using either battery , I hard reset both batteries just to eliminate that possiblity , I'm pretty good at diagnostics and by that point I had checked everything i could without being plugged into the diagnostic software. I narrowed it down to the pcb at this point. So knowing I'm out of warranty I opened the motor up carefully expecting to see water damage only to find not a sign of any water ingress or visible damage to any of the internal components or the PCB all connectors were good and had been treated to dialectric grease in my early days of owning the bike , all the bearings felt smooth too , so at this point I carefully reassembled the drive unit and took it back to my local supplying dealer to let them see if their software could identify the problem, Im the original owner and asked them to see what they could find as basically I could do no more myself other than just buy a new motor, As soon as they plugged it in they couldn't read any data at all the software couldn't connect so basically they then declared the motor dead.. So using your advice I asked them to reach out to Bosch and put a service report in . Three days later Bosch have come back and offered me a new motor at 50 % discount, now I'm just waiting for the new drive unit to arrive at the shop and get it fitted so like you say Dave it's always worth a try, other than that I had a dead bike, not a cheap fix but a damned sight cheaper than it could have ended up , I also asked them to tell Bosch i have literally just bought another new Whyte with the smart system gen 4 directly before my other bike failed ( sods law ) , I dont know whether that helped sway Bosch but a 50% discount is certainly way better than a bog off your out of warranty . Thanks for your advice Dave

Looks like the PCB issue, most probably from the moisture ingress / condensation (what else)? AFAIK this PCB is not moisture protected. IMHO this is criminal that they do not do it in the factory. It would cost them a quid. Looks to me like a planned obsolescence of the product. What about all these eco / sustainability claims?

Hello. missed the guy with the accent. Pretty sure the motor itself can be repaired. I can feel my fingers wanting to crack it open to figure it out whats wrong. Rule of the thumb, if its not followed by a catastrophic failure, usually the power reșated issues are the easiest to faultfind. Im surprised the video was not starting with a connections schematic for the bike. Also, I would NEVER fit new parts to a faulty scenario without assessing the full schematic because they can get damaged too, and that would not be fun.
Dave, it seems to me you need a guy who can repair electronics, as good as you are with mechanics.

@@TheYorkshireBikeMechanicHi Dave. Thanks for replying (not many do lol) I'm 72 so I don't often go banging along muddy tracks. I'm in Shaw which is part of lovely Oldham. I'm a fair weather cyclist and mainly stick to main roads and quiet lanes. I don't go out in the rain unless I'm caught out. I only wipe the bike down with a damp cloth when I clean it. The Purion display has still got the original batteries. I've replaced a few items on the bike that have worn out but the electrics have been absolutely no trouble at all. I have my own RUclips chanel with plenty of videos to give you a look at the Cube. It's here to stay. It's more of a touring road bike. As the bike ages and the miles clock up I sometimes film my efforts at home bike mechanicing in the shed which is rather painful and funny to watch at times. It's mainly to let people see how the bike progresses as it (and I ) age. My wife has a Scott Hybrid e bike. (2,600 miles and a bit older than the Cube) and again the Bosch electrics so far have not been a problem but at Sherwood Pines on 1 occasion it read ERROR on her speedo and the power turned off. The speedo was still lit so we switched it off and back on again and it was no trouble after. The day after it did the same but on the final day it was okay. I've cleaned the Scott's dirty and dull battery contacts to see how it goes. We'll find out in a few weeks in Scotland. But my chanel is all about the Cube. When new I did a video of how far I could get in 'ECO' Well, I managed 78.5 miles. So I'm planning to do it again covering similar roads to see how (or if) the 400 watt Bosch battery has degraded. I just need the weather to be a bit kinder. Cheers.

Thanks for watching and your comments. only problem with that is that each motor is programmed for the bike it went in in the first place

The lesson learned here is don't buy a Bosch powered bike because they don't allow the end user to buy tools to repair their own property.

Brilliant video! Can the motor not be repaired via a third party? As a option?
