    I hope this sheds a little light on how vague the laws are in regards to eBikes. I personally think that class 3 bikes should be considered an ebike when considering road riding. What are your thoughts?

      I agree that class 3 e-bikes should still be e-bikes. I’d love a more specifics on paper as to what an e-bike is too! I T-boned a van that cut me off, this was last year. The police, both parties’ insurance, and my lawyer didn’t know any of the laws and regulations pertaining to e-bikes and it’s quite vague right now. Everyone is unsure of how to handle accidents like mine. Kinda sad to see

      By being part of a class, it would define that they are bicycles but it would make sense to get more restrictive with more speed. It's just early since fat Americans have been too lazy to catch on to the trend as fast as other countries have and every state is introducing laws as needed.

      I personally think they need to stop sticking their nose in private business.
      There should not be classes, only speed limits on roads and trails decided by local government.
      One class only. If it's got pedal propulsion and under a hundred pounds then it's a bicycle.

      @@steveh7108 Yea the government really doesn't trust bicyclists since you don't see every Tesla being pulled over to see if they have a Ludicrous mode available or every supercar being impounded since they can go 200 mph...

      @@-.O.- speed shouldn't have anything to do with a bicycle classification.
      You can easily get up to 50 or 60 miles an hour on regular road bike going downhill.
      Classifying them by speed is absolutely ridiculous.
      They never bothered to classify mopeds by speed in the 50-plus Years they've been existence on our roads. It was the size of the motor.
      And even then they didn't restrict the motor size.
      Mopeds have always been anything under 50 ccs did not need to be licensed but if it was over fifty CC's it did need to be licensed.
      It's not that complicated.
      To restrict a manufacturer from making things more efficient or effective this early in the game when they're practically begging electric vehicle technology to improve, it's absolutely ridiculous.

    Why bash on class 3 ebikes when they can be set to ride in class1, class 2 or class 3? People making an issue of class 3 ebikes are karens and bike snobs and should stay off bikes. I ride an Ariel X 52 volt and it will do 35mph and 30 mile range but in the city I follow the class 1 in town or on bike trails. Regulate yourselves not the ebikes.

      Exactly!!! They are just mad when I pass them with ease on 28mph and their poor bike can't go over 20mph. I has that happen to me where I passed a dude and started to yell to slow down. I laughed and flipped him off..oh and yeah I can go faster than 28mph on a regular mountain bike !

      I was on the Santana River Trail this weekend and these elitists cyclists were hauling ass, they were more dangerous than anyone I saw on an ebike.

      While giving you as the customers the possibility to program the bike, could make the bike illegal. It’s a crazy big grey area, as no one can be sure, that the bike runs in it‘s regulations.
      Here in Germany that wasn’t a problem for a long time, but than all these China bikes starting to show up.
      Manufacturers get fined now, for not locking the bike firmware.
      For the riders it’s even worse. When they get you, you run a unregisted vehical, without an injurance and without a drivers license. This can get ultra expensive.
      To be honest, a 28mph doesn’t fit beside pedestrians nor a bike lane.

    I like the way it is now. No definitive answers or explanation...no way to inforce anything. That means all ebikes are currently legal and can be ridden anywhere. Who needs a government blessing to ride a bicycle. Im waiting for my Wired freedom ebike to ship. Looks like a fat tire bmx bike. Has a throttle and pedal assist. It can go 38mph when unlocked but ships locked at level 2. I also have a motorcycle and a motorcycle license so i can ride it regardless of the law but would rather ride it anywhere like a bicycle and not stuck on the road obeying traffic laws like my motorcycle. The Sur-ron is messing it up for everyone. That thing is a motorcycle, doesn't even have pedals and dumbasses are riding those over 30mph on sidewalks and bike paths getting citizens and cops all riled up. Its not hard to play this game. You want to ride on sidewalks and not adhere to traffic laws then ride something that has pedals and at least pretends to be a bicycle and keep the speed down around pedestrians

    Full dump trucks are able to speed thru a 25MPH zone but they're not banned from them. We use speed limits for control. Same should apply. Forget the classes.

      Agreed, but since bike paths don't have speed limits, the classification system can be useful if we apply a class system based on max speed. Of course, I would prefer to buy something that could be adjusted with software so I can match the trail I'm on.

      There should be speed limits for cycling on bike trails and paths where walkers and joggers share the paths. Also walkers/joggers should watch their earbud volume and leave an ear free for hearing bike bells or voices calling “on your left.” There should be good, wide-enough bike lanes on main roads, but even then, phone-podcast-text-RUclips watching drivers will run over cyclists riding carefully in bike lanes. Ban all you want - it’s not going to solve the problem.
      People need to leave phones OUT of driving, and all users of the road need to obey traffic laws, speed limits etc. Perhaps people traveling by any form of transportation on main roads shared with traffic vehicle should at least take a class, study the traffic and road laws, and have some kind of “responsible road user” license. Wild and irresponsible, reckless ebike, scooter, one-wheel, etc riders shouldn’t be allowed to block traffic or endanger people. Neither should irresponsible phone users be operating vehicles - they are a disaster on a ticker timer.

    I've been riding around on a 1250w dual motor e-bike for almost 2 years. I've been stopped 4 times, each one just to ask about the bike. The cops that know what it was and how much it cost. My top speed is 52 lol.

    The CPSC deals with the safety of products, they're not going to deal with "rules of the road" regulations. These aren't highway vehicles, so the federal government can't and shouldn't get involved with that stuff, it's not their place. It's a state issue. Just like with 50cc scooters, in some states you just need a driver's license but no registration, insurance, helmet, etc. In others you need all that stuff. It sounds like you're actually hoping for regulations. But be careful what you wish for. The government will love to give you some regulations, they'll give them to you good and hard.

    I hope gov't realizes that for many folks Ebikes can be an affordable 'green' options for urban and even sub-urban commuters and finds a way to make them easy to own for commuting by avoiding the need to classify them as something that needs insurance, plates and tax payments. Ideally I'd like to see definitions boosted to 1500W motors and maybe 30-35mph.

      Yes, I am in a suburb with bike lanes where they need to be. I’ve got 5,500 miles and many of them are 5 miles to almost all the stores that I need to survive. Those miles would otherwise be spent on an aging car that I hope outlasts me. It’s a class 3 Aventon Level. After the initial thrills and learning curves settle down, that bike, even though capable of 28mph, rarely gets over 20 mph. 20 mph is a fun speed for the routes I take thru a park and a bunch of parking lots. Those lots are empty on the weekends and I highly recommend them for the challenges and fun they can give you. 28 mph at Assist levels 4 and 5 suck too much juice but I sure would be disappointed if I didn’t have that speed capability.

    I live in a town of 40,000 and use my Etrike as my only mode of transportation. I seldom run over 10 mph & it serves me well.
    I observe all traffic laws. Many people stop me and ask me questions about it.

      I find going over 10 mph isn't all that fun. You can miss a lot of scenery.

    I’ve ridden my pedal bike WAY faster than 20 MPH….. I wonder why that number matters. Also that’s not traffic travel speeds. Making it unsafe on actual roads. And maybe it’s for crashes? But You can smash your grape at 20mph also.

      I once did 55 mph coming down Monarch Pass in Colorado on my road bike… I could’ve gone faster, but I was too chicken!

    Speed should be the only thing to regulate, NOT power or classes. You need more power in hilly or mountainous areas. It is stupid to have classes of bikes. A pickup truck has to have more power to pull a trailer than a Mini-Cooper; but they both are restricted to the speed limit. Government bureaucrats love to regulate and control your life; so stop asking them for clarification!! You brick and mortar stores are a real problem.

    Also, even if your ebike is capable to going over 28 mph, I'm sure that most ebikes have a setting where you can cap the max speed, so if you cap the max speed at 20 mph and it has a throttle, then it would comply with the specs for a class 2 ebike and even motor wattage isn't a definant thing, its simply the voltage of the battery mutiplied by how many amps your controller pulls and that give you the watts.

      I have a "street legal" switch on my 3000w bike that limits speed to around 28mph (along with full lighting, brake and turn signals), cops have been cool with it so far. They know that anything they claim has to be proven in court, and they don't have the resources to do that.

      @@ChrisB... I have a 1500 watt ebike that with the speed uncapped, I can usually go up to about 35 mph but when I get in town, I usually slow it down and so far, the cops haven't said anything to me about it. I'm sure uncapped, your 3000 watt ebike can do about 60 mph.

      My 1200w Ebike, has 3 Class modes and an "Off Road Mode". Top Speed in Off Road is 35mph. Class 3 is like 28mph.

      Well in NY the laws are even dumber you can ride class 3 as long as your pop is high enough. Also you can ride any size motor could be a crazy 15k watt but as long as limited to class restrictions it's legal...@@ChrisB...

      I'm in the UK and our max speed is 15.5mph so I got a switch on my controller that will unlimit it. My peak watts on a full charge are 2400w and we are only meant to have 250.

    Its been a while, but I seem to remember that the 750 watt maximum was 'continuous' power. The ordinary definition of continuous would be include without overheating. This would mean that you should be able to 'punch it' even higher when you see a rubber necking driver coming your way. In California, the speed limit is 15 mph and on the right side of the road, in a bike lane if available. Pedestrians get to walk on the left side facing traffic so they can jump out of the way if some driver doesn't see them. The bike laws make you a target. If you could keep up with traffic,you would be much less of a surprise to drivers.

    This is also extremely bad for people that love bikes but for one reason or another like age or health maybe going a place you don’t want to be spent and sweaty or just want to go for a nice ride without the intensity especially on a 75 80 degree + day it gets everyone out there that wants and even gets people to give bikes a chance that other wise may not have.

    It's a simple solution to me if we use motor vehicle laws as a template.
    Class 1,2, and 3:
    Class 1, 2 and 3 are not built to go past 28 mph and most hard core bicyclists can go faster than that anyway. 28 mph isn't a big deal in a 25 mph neighborhood. Most don't really go 28 anyway. So, just leave class 1,2 and 3 alone and let them go where bicycles go and follow the same laws as bicycles. Some paved trails with lots of people should have speed limits for analog bikers, e bikers, scooters, skaters, etc but only in congested areas and difficult visual clearances. Site people for being reckless. Don't just ban everything.
    Faster e bikes:
    Ebikes or E motorcycles that go faster than 28 mph but not past 50 or so could be compared to 50cc scooters or ATVs. 50cc scooters or ATVs do not require a license to drive but are not allowed on bike trails. (Classified as "motor vehicles") They are allowed on ATV trails and dirt roads. They must follow the same rules as cars and be street legal with turn signals, etc. to be on the street.
    E Motorcycles:
    Anything that goes above 55 mph and can be compared to a 125cc or higher motorcycle. Unless just used for off-road and only on designated ATV or motorcycle trails, a driver should be required to have a license/motorcycle certificate and register the vehicle to be street legal to drive on roads just like a regular motorcycle.

    You look young so I wouldn’t expect you to know but this kinda happened before. In the 1970s when gas went over a dollar dozens of companies started selling Mopeds. Small engines, pedals really similar. It wasn’t a big deal at first but when kids and teenagers started playing in traffic and sidewalks it became a problem. Most models were pretty slow but there were a few that were as fast as a scooter. Those ended up being regulated pretty tightly. Lights and horn, not over 50cc, no bike paths ect. Most importantly they had to have a special registration sticker, rider had to be over 16 and had to hold a driver’s license. The customer base is a little different now as a lot of older people who may no longer easily ride conventional bikes,are purchasing ebikes. Most of these folks aren’t going to be as interested in speed as hill climbing and range. Once again people desiring speed are causing a lot of problems, bikes like the Surron on bike paths, modifications being made to controllers ect. Parents buying their 12 year olds 1000 watt ebikes and turning them loose isn’t helping either. I would hate to see ebikes excluded from bike paths due to a few idiots. It’s not the bike, it’s the rider. Many times I’ve seen groups of “spandex boys” going a lot faster than the posted limit, a little more dangerous than a 70 year old plodding among on his step through. I also wouldn’t be too quick to dismiss “internet ebikes”. While some may be shoddy, a little research helps a lot. Bafang motors and controller’s have been proven to be safe and reliable and companies like Rad Power, Eunorau, Juiced and others make a good economical product . It is important to have a US dealer though, I wouldn’t recommend some rando from Amazon or Ali express.

    Make it affordable and road accessible. That being said more and more peoples are going to use e bikes . 1. Less pollution 2. Cheaper to operate compare to gas 3. I’m sure big improvement on traffic etc.

    Some of the hailong battery boxes were catching fire because the usb port circuit board soldier points were cutting into the cells I ordered 2 and they were both the same way . I used hot glue and plastic from a soda bottle to pad the circuit board to keep it from cutting into the cells

    they just don't want people to have transportation without having to pay some kind of fee to the government one way or another if you have an e bike that does 30 mph you don't need a car in town they cant have you getting around for free

    good advice i debated this same thing. I live in California. I was gonna pick up a sur ron bike, but decided to go with a 2022 stump jumper. price range was the same. however how laws change tech evolving with batteries i felt safer to stay with a normal peddle bike.

    The o ly reason they are catching fire is because people plug them in and walk away. The bike battery will change and then no one unplug it and the power is still pumping into a fulling charged battery. And boom direction check my throughout the charing process and have zero issues. Plus people that have had fire also don't store their batteries properly when not in use. It's the consumers fault not the companies.

    As for the "big guys" (Trek, Speciallized and Giant), they are starting to wobble financially at this time. They might not be around in a few years either. Even worse, they have a lot of custom parts which are unique to their brand. If they go under, you are stuck with yard-art. At least with the cheap Chinese brands, they tend to use the same family of common batteries, as well as hub motors and controller design. You will have better luck finding replacement parts for them in 5 years, than many of the major brands. Those parts will be much cheaper too.

      the contollers, motors and batteries on the big brans tend to be made by Botch, Shimano, Yamaha comoinies that will still be around

      @@CMG78 The question will be whether they will continue to carry stock for the "customized" versions of their products made for those high-end companies. A lot of displays are unique to those brands, as well as custom tweaks to the controllers and motors.
      But, like anything, you might be able to cobble something together, but it won't be the same.

    As a new e biker , if I’m riding on the road and I’m not flying down the road at 30+ will I even get a look my way on my class 3 bike ? Are officers stopping people riding responsible? Thx

    Ok. So the thing is there are two distinct and separate issues. The federal definition is a "commerce" definition related to trade between states. The local state definition is a "road legal" definition.
    From what I've read, most states already have definitions on there books that cover e-bikes. Most list "brake horsepower" in their definitions, 1 brake hp ~=750W.

    The guys who buy these high powered e bikes are the reason why laws affecting e bikes and those who ride them legally and responsibly. I saw 2 the other day riding in a crazy manner, cutting off cars and almost getting hit by cars.

      it's best to get a stealth ebike that doesn't look like a motorcycle/moped. My ebike looks like a reg bike because I have the battery covered to look like a frame bag. So even if ebikes happened to get regulated, I'd have nothing to worry about lol.

      @@thelonercoder5816 We are very aware of bikes that use frame bags and hidden batteries. Infact we pay attention more to the bikes and those ridding them. The power for crazy speeds isn't there but doesn't mean someone will be reckless.

    I "hacked" my yamaha ebike because I hated being stuck in a certain gear and being able to push it out when I could. I've had it for over three years and have had to replace a battery under warranty, ( I currently have three) but I have toured the western US almost 15K miles and love it. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and I still am limited to about 30mph because of gearing limitations(48×11).

    In Florida for a moped under 50cc you have to title and tag it, and you need a drivers license. I think the tag stuff is around 30 dollars a year or a little less. Oh, and you don't have to insure it.
    Anything above 50cc you have to tag and title it , you need insurance. Also you need a motorcycle drivers license. To get that license you have to take a driving test on a motorcycle.

    Not in my small town in nw Arizona. All ebikes are considered bicycles, even electric dirt bikes. If you live in a big city, you lose your freedom, no thanks.

    In Ireland, anything over 250 Watts, 25 km/h pedal assist, or throttle is considered as moped and you need insurance, road tax, motorcycle helmet and you CANNOT use cycle lanes... I think, you better off buying a normal motorcycle...

    The weight of the rider also should be considered in determining class of bike. A 400 pound person needs a bike with “excess power” just to be as mobile as a 125 pounder on a 250 watt bike

    I don’t even know if my bike falls into any category, lol. It’s a mountain bike that was converted to electric and it’s capable of going over 40 (although I typically go 30-35 cause 40+ drains the battery fast) and it’s entirely pedal assist.

    So what if you have a unclassified bike that's only throttled with no pedals but has only a max speed of 20mph with 4 motors that can be dialed down to 750 watts comes from factory at at 750 watt but can be all out at 5k watts but with a usable something like 4800 actual usable watt hours even when ungoverned and the company has it as a off road bike can you also ride it anywhere or are you just stuck to dirt roads?

    It's over 50cc which 50cc 45 mph+ and to be a order for it to be a moped. however in some states is 125cc to 150cc
    to be considered as a license required moped so it just really depends on state-to-state
    In some states a bicycles completely a separate vehicle from a moped or motorcycle or any type of other vehicle like cars and things like that
    And I think in Florida all e-bikes are considered a bicycle. which is pretty great. Regardless if it's a Class 1 and class 2 or class 3 or even unofficially class 4 which is a E-bicycle that extends past 750 W and speeds can range between 30mph to 40 mph with pedal assist and automatic assist between 20 to 28 mph+
    which I consider that to be the true gray zones of electric bicycles. to be honest. because it does not surpass 50cc but it's very close
    Because depending on the model of the 50 CC engine and the way that they're manufactured. a 50cc moped or motorcycle can succeed all the way up to 45 + mph. so it really just depends
    On the model of a 50cc engine
    Even if a class 4 e-bike is still considered as a moped. it's still would not been able to be required a licensable tags or anything that requires a license because it's still not fast enough to succeed 50cc which is the requirement for a license if your moped goes beyond 50cc but in the end.

    The problem is simple but difficult. E bikes are can be considered to be a motorized cycle, and the category is one of worst parts that DMV does not execute properly. So the all problem happened. In some case of several states, the less than 50cc moped or motorized cycle are exempt to be registered. So, in fact, those states are, in fact, should be no issues, except a certain power level of motor will put the bike. In the realistic, most of e bike on the market is just fine, because for one of example, BBR's 49cc motor has 2~3 hp = 2200kw approximately. So, if motorized cycle is exempt from the registration in some states, e bike up to ~2000W is not having an issue in rational way.
    But the other states has a problem, that if they have a regulation for motorized cycle, because of conflict of theory, and old federal law make a mass in everywhere. So, I basically suggest, the e bike motor power should be goes to up to 2000W, or make a same rules with the standard of motorized cycle. But always the regulation fanatics make more and more about something, and especially, they bring failure of Europeans.

    Interesting. The CFR's consider a "Type 1" bike that has a motor as a bicycle. And an e-bike is not defined in the CFR.

    Love your channel HOWEVER, the 20MPH is ridiculous, 28 is good, hence the need for tuning chips!! I am old and cannot keep up with bike traffic on Miami bike lanes even with "tuned" class 1. Many young fit riders maintain speeds above 25, so why should an ebike rider go slower?

    I’m late to the comments by a year but what do they classify a bike thats 2000 watts 60v WIRED bike? Goes almost 40 so wondered what it would actually be.. even the Bomber bikes I’m not sure what those are classified as unless its still a gray area. Its got pedals so its a bike but its over the 750watts

      If it's over 750W, it's not an ebike. It's a motorcycle. The ebike category is a little carve-out exempted from the normal rules based on the fact it doesn't have enough power to go fast.

    Okay, now I am ready to have discussions about the imaginary class 4 and 5 eBikes with pedals. For those who commute on their bikes, and must integrate with 35MPH traffic, there is some room to discuss eBikes which better fit this use-case.
    There are already many 30MPH plus 1000 Watt plus bikes being sold. Bikes which exceed class 3 are quite common.
    Even liability insurance companies don't have policies for them. So getting liability insurance is a problem at this time. I can insure my bike against theft all day long, but not accident liability.
    I would love to have a clear legal path to having a bike like the Wired Freedom, with over 2000 watt motor and a speed of roughly 40 MPH. Much the same is true for the Motor Goat v3. Both of these bikes would be great commuter bikes where the rider must contend with street traffic going 35 to 40 MPH. They also have just enough power to get out of the way of exceptionally stupid car drivers.

    Practically all ebikes are illegal under the 3-Class definitions. Class 2 bikes are limited to 20 mph but every one I’ve ever ridden would go a little faster than 20 mph throttle-only and thus illegal if a LEO wants to cite you. Class 3’s can’t legally have a throttle and can usually be relied upon to go 30+ mph so are thus not Class 3. And don’t forget the 750 watt restriction because even a “500 watt” motor will peak over 750 watts.
    Right now there is a lack of enforcement of both these ebike requirements, and existing traffic laws. I’m sure some jurisdictions take more lenient stands on these issues than others, but the fact remains that the more people who ride, the more idiots will be out there. People are getting injured, law enforcement is getting involved, and we’re going to see new restrictive laws passed. The first bikes to go will be ones that cops recognize as being illegal, eg. eMotos, moped-styles and well-known high-power brands like WIRED. I love owning a fast ebike but I’d hate to have it impounded or be forced to buy insurance. Enjoy yourself safely while you can, ‘cause the end is near.

    The mention of bicycle shops selling ebikes for $2400 (min?) compared to $1200 (or really $500) online sounds like buying online will put the bicycle bike shops out of business. I don't know anyone who wants to spend 2 to 4 times more for something. Is the threat of fire any different regardless of where it is purchased?

    ebikes are easy to ride, cheap to buy and no insurance, gas, or car payments. I paid $300 on temu and i love mine, take it everywhere. you don’t need to drop a grand. Mine has a throttle and no faster than 20 mph which fits my city regulations for the bike lane.

    Pay attention to your state laws if your ebike is legal. If you want to go over 25mph, consider getting a motorcycle or make sure your bike is registered with the DMV.
    Smart law enforcement will know if your bike is legal or not.

    My ebike doesn't fall under any of the classes it's a 1300w with max 32mph and has everything pedals assist/throttle/manual mode, basically ride your way. I use it to commute to work so far cops ignore me but i stay under 24mph just incase

    I have F-TRIKES, which are human and flywheel powered cycles that weigh up to 7,000 pounds. I can LEGALLY ride these cycles as fast as they'll go, because they're not electric powered. My cycles do 40MPH, but I might increase the speed to 50MPH. I don't even have to worry about reckless drivers, they get out of my way!! 😂😂😂 As for E-BIKE riders, you're not covered in the event of an accident because you're classified as a vehicle. My F-TRIKE is classified as a "BICYCLE", so I'm still considered a pedestrian. You E-BIKERS better look at those laws and how those regulators are screwing you over. 🤔🤔😒😒

    Somebody wrong, my bike @moment can gk 22mph in throttle or pas. Its not unlocked. It will go 28mph + in pas but it will go faster than 20 on throttle once unlocked which where i live its my understanding; 20 mph throttle/28mph pas

      A classic 3 with throttle, at this point in time. I have a 750-watt class 3 with throttle. When in a state park on bike/walking trail, I remove the throttle and set the settings through the display back to max 20 mph, so it becomes - for that location’s laws - a Class 1 ebike. I’m 70, careful, respectful, and love to go go as fast as I can in appropriate roads and safely… but I adjust my ebike to the appropriate class - 1,2, or 3 , speeds, and consideration for all others as regulated.

    Here’s the problem. You have class A-B-C. But, today there are ebikes that are modified to go well over 30 miles per hour and some up to 100 miles per hour. Those e-bikes should be in a class in itself. I own a Aniioki AQ177 pro max with two independent motors. It’s considered a class 3 e-bike because it can go around 30 miles per hour. Then you have theses modified e-bikes that can go double that. There should be a class 4 e-bike that covers the super fast e-bikes. Those modified e-bikes are what the police want off the road unless you title it, tag it and have insurance. I totally understand where they are coming from and I agree with them. These class “ 4” e-bikes are going to ruin it for everyone. Do you think they care? Absolutely not. They run the streets doing 50 plus miles per hour and laugh about it while at the same time making it hard for class 1-2-3 e-bikes to not to be a target for the police. Again, class “4” e-bikes are going to ruin it for all other e-bikes. I don’t have a problem with tagging my e-bike and even getting insurance. That is just a part of owning a vehicle that you drive on the road with.
    I would also like to mention that a moped that has a 49cc motor is legal and they can go 30-35 miles per hour and they are exempt from buying a tag or having insurance. This is legal so why should a class 3 e-bike like mine be liable to have a tag? Because of the e-bikes that can go well above 35 miles per hour are going to ruin it for everyone else.
    The problem with e-bikes catching on fire is that the battery is NOT UL approved. These Chinese companies produce the cheapest e-bikes they can and people see that price tag and jump to buy one not considering the safety aspect. You get what you pay for and cheap means just that,cheap.

    16 CFR § 1512.2 is defining a BICYCLE. It is not defining ebikes. Under the definition of a bicycle, part 2 states to be considered a bicycle, it must have "...fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts (1 h.p.), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor while ridden by an operator who weighs 170 pounds, is less than 20 mph." So under this definition, many Class 1 and Class 2 ebikes with motors less than 750W are considered bicycles. They have fully operable pedals and if a Class 2 bicycle is powered solely by the motor does not exceed 20 MPH. A Class 3 ebike can exceed 20 miles per hour when utilizing power (though not "Solely" and that is an issue) so it may not be considered a bicycle under the CFR definition. Also, one thing to note is many manufacturers are releasing ebikes with 750W motors and according to the Federal Bicycle definition, they are not Bicycles because a Bicycle must be powered by a motor less than 750W. The CFR does not state "750W or less". To law makers, words matter.

    I'll diagnose and repair my $600 E-bike and as soon as I can figure out how to deregulate the speed -ride it on throttle only at 28 mph.
    Fer fukksakes I've had real motorcycles that didn't even hit the power-ban in 1st gear at 20.
    "Regulation" is a word that describes the theft of autonomy, freedom, and the ability to pursue a little happiness.

    Wouldn't it make sense to add a 4th class? Let's say, make 3rd class max speed is 25mph and 4th class anything over, including watts? Then 4th class can be regulated to registration and leave the other classes alone. 🤔
