  • Welcome back to my Breath of Fire Binge. It seems that Breath of Fire 3 is often regarded as the best in the series, which is why I was completely pumped to jump right in and experience it for the first time, myself. The good news: it didn’t let me down. It took everything that worked well in the first two games, and took it to the next level. Watch this review to see what it's all about!

This RPG defined my life. If you played this you played them all. I played this game over and over again. Many things like the master system provides a lot of replayability. The story is amazing, the graphics are great, the characters are so memorable.

Hell yeah. Try a Mage Ryu build with Masters like Mygas, Emitai and Deis. Plenty of AP for Dragon Forms or for magic (mostly buffing and healing, damage spells fall off eventually)

When I first played this game, it was a rental. I actually kept it for over a week, incurring hefty fines from the video store, and the wrath of my father. But, it was so worth it.
The Faerie Village was definitely one of my favorite parts of the game. I sunk so much time into developing it between important plot points. I definitely want to jump back into playing it again sometime in the near future.

@@Venoix I actually have the first game on my phone and while it's pretty retro by now, it's really not terrible for such an old game. 2 is far worse due exclusively to the frustratingly high encounter rate. I legitimately quit playing the game 20hrs or so in and refused to finish it because i despise grinding and was not willing to suffer through that many random encounters. I just couldn't take it. From an objective standpoint though, for being an SNES game, 2 is an absolute gaming marvel. The character animations, gameplay mechanics, and even battle menus were far ahead of their time.

I normally don't like turn based rpgs with a silent protagonist, but despite that, this is one of my all-time favorite games. One of my favorite things about this game is that the main antagonist isn't a typical evil villain. She legitimately wants to protect the world, but her methods of doing it are wrong. Not only did she commit genocide on the brood (only because she feared their power), but she also wouldn't allow anyone to build the machines they wanted, somewhat taking away everybody's freedom. She's a lot like Injustice Superman.

I remember playing this game for hours trying to find the way out of the graveyard. When i finally did, my players were leveled up like a MF!!! How he yelled like Goku when he turned into one of those Dragons "almost super saiyan" when you were that far in the game. Remembering when i finally beat the game after plenty of times dying and trying again and again.... LOVE this game!!!! BOFIII, Final Fantast Tactics and Final Fantasy 7 are my top 3 ever RPG of all time. FF8 is right behind!!!

Brilliant game. The PS1 had some quality JRPG's. Yeah the minigames are the worst part of the game, they can be a bit of a pain. I think the graphic style is kind of timeless and still looks good today.

    • @kingofbudokai
      @kingofbudokai 4 года назад

About the graphic style, i agree completely. It's similar to what they did in FF Tactics with the 2d character models and 3D environments, only taken up a notch with actual animations for every monster and boss ambient movement, larger scale, etc. The random 3D models for bosses in BoF4 is actually my single biggest gripe with the game, because it just doesn't mesh well.

I just beat BOF3 for the first time. The story and especially the gameplay were great and an improvement over the first two games. Unlike the first two games, I didn't feel the need to grind that much save for the final dungeon. Though I was not a big fan of the overworld design being too linear, I did enjoy the skippable random battles. Even though I am OK with RPGs with high encounter rates, I think this design choice is a good idea especially for those new to the genre.
It seems like Capcom took some inspiration from FF6 which was released 3 years prior. For instance, the Master system in BOF3 was somewhat similar to the Espers in FF6; while you can simply switch between FF6 espers, you have to backtrack to the location of the BOF3 masters to gain stat bonuses upon leveling up.
As for the minigames, I actually enjoyed playing them a lot especially the fishing game where you can catch Manillos to purchase exquisite weapons and items.
Yes, I think the fact that certain dungeons that require you to have specific companions in your party is a big let down. Perhaps having some dialogue clues would be helpful or make these sections optional for backtracking and exploration.
Another flaw that really annoyed me is when you have Garr in your party, he often gets stuck between people and in tight corners so many times because he is just so big. This makes me constantly switch party leaders just to get him back on screen.
The music in this game just rocks. It is definitely something I can listen to all day and not get bored. My only complaint is that the 1st overworld theme in BOF1 (Starting the Journey: ruclips.net/video/3IrsP6Kk1ts/видео.html) and the 2nd overworld theme in BOF2 (Breath of Fire: ruclips.net/video/d4c7f_4GuDo/видео.html), which are basically the same song, is not present in this game. Some might say that it may not be fitting or relevant for the story, but it could have been an opportunity for Capcom to introduce a very catching and recognizable tune similar to Mario's World 1-1 and Zelda's Overworld Theme.
Overall, I thought Breath of Fire 3 is an amazing game and definitely one that I will be replaying many times in the future.

It's hilarious; I had no idea I could heal Boyd during his fight with the big sea brute guy; When he's waving at his monkey friend, I thought it was just a nice animation, not a 'Oh hey, cast healing/support magic on boyd". So I trained Boyd to the point of being able to solo the whole fight. Finding out years later shocked me and made me laugh.

Aside from them breaking up the battle monotony, they were both extremely creative and well implemented. I absolutely loved training beyd to the point where he could just 1 shot my team. Solid review mate, although I gotta disagree about some of your points on the mini games: the desert wasn't really a mini game, I think it was just a realistic change of pace. Like when you crossed the ocean there was no need for a similar change because you were headed north anyway cos you were on the boat, so a few cutscenes and a boss fight felt right. Whereas the desert was bigged up before you got there and it did require you to pay attention for an hour or so. I found it interesting that you used the stars to navigate and there was fights every couple of minutes then finished with a cool boss. None of it felt meaningless. The only aspect of the mini games I didn't like was training Beyd. Literally every player will agree on that point, and that part of the game is easily the least fun until you get in to the volcano.

This was an excellent review my friend. This is the second breath of fire game that I've completed for myself and this was quite a difficult game to complete to 100%. I did get my enjoyment out of the game, and it is probably my favourite entry in the breath of fire series out of the ones I played. I will tell you that to get everything in this game is incredibly hard because some of the best weapons/armour/items in the game have incredibly ludicrous drop rates. The fairy village is an absolute pain especially since some of the items you can get is through exploring and it takes a lot of resets and its the only way you can get them. Some of the puzzle elements in a lot of the dungeons are incredibly annoying and the desert of death can walk off the earth into obscurity. I couldn't give less fucks if they just had renamed RE4 with a completely different name because it has nothing to do with what made the original three great! Roundhouse kicks, body slams, German supplex, moonsaults through lasers, Orcs, midget pirates... Come on! In comparison with 1, 2 and 3 which told a science gone wrong story in a plausible way within this fictional universe, the story of 4 was just retarded. Superhuman powers killed the franchise.

Dude the desert is super easy. You can get through it in 4 nights or so. It's maybe a 20 minute section tops including the boss fight. As far as the needing certain party members though, i 100% agree. Easily the worst part of the game imo. Fortunately, as you said, it's rare (i think it happens 5 or so times? 3 with momo, 1 with garr in angel tower and 1 with needing rei to unlock a door), but still annoying the first time you play and don't know they are coming up.

It's not so much the desert part which was annoying, more that freakin' box blocking you access to the Container Yard!
If that box wasn't there, we could have skipped the desert (and Dragnier) altogether... but that's OK because I like those parts :)

BoF3 is the highlight of the series. I don't hold it against anyone for enjoying BoF4 but I can levy such scathing indictment against many of the creative design decisions Capcom made while developing it that it makes BoF4 look laughably bad compared to BoF3. But thats fine, it's okay, I get it, BoF4 is still widely adored by many fans, they are welcome to hoist it up on a pedastal if they want to, but I choose not to participate in that. I'm good. I got BoF3. I'm good.

i crave for remaster. The graphics are amazing already. We don't want flash player made 2... look at what they did with Breath of Fire 6 on mobile... horrid graphics. All we need is true 16:9 (unlike stretched version on PSP locked @30fps) we want 60fps as on PSX1 original. Reduce a bit of the load times and we're good to go :-). When you use higher resolution.,.. I mean look at breath of fire 4 on PC... due the higher resolution the 2D sprites got ugly and many details lost. I would hate to see that happen to breath of fire 3
