This game was my first introduction to JRPGs in general when a friend brought it over for an afternoon get-together. He played it up to the mansion portion where the heroes were fending off the ghosts before we all called it quits and went on with whatever kids stuff we did those days. Took a couple of years and testing out other JRPGs on demo discs (like Legend Of Dragoon) before I got around to revisiting Breath Of Fire III by buying my own copy and finishing it. Since then, it's been a neverending journey to complete even more JRPG titles ranging from Suikoden and the Chrono series to Shadow Hearts and Star Ocean.

I remember playing this a couple of times when I was younger, but couldn't get too far because the story didn't seem to make a lot of sense. I enjoyed the gameplay and for a time when JRPGs were a dime a dozen, I think this one is definitely worth a revisit. Thanks for the review!

Thank you for reviewing this game! I loved BoF 1 and BoF 2, but never played any of the later installments of the series. It seemed to me that all of the later titles got mediocre/lackluster reviews, and so I never made much of an effort to check them out. I had no idea that BoF 3 looked like this --- gorgeous sprite work that has aged significantly better than the polygons offered up by its contemporary RPGs on the PSX. I'm adding this on my games-to-play list as of today. Thanks, SNES Drunk!

One of the best RPGs I've ever played. Great gameplay, amazing story and unforgettable characters. The mandatory desert bit is the only bad thing about it, I know some people who dropped the game because of it and never picked it up again. Other than that it's a must platy for RPG fans, even in 2019. Graphics have age really well too, unlike most other PSX games.

Love this game. Want to replay it in a way that seems somewhat fresh? Try making Ryu a mage. Ignore his physical stuff and just give him +MP and +Magic masters to lv up with, and teach him the elemental spells like Mjollnir/Iceblast/etc. It actually works REALLY well -- he has a ton of MP to stay in his Dragon form for a really long time and his healing spells get really strong, plus he has those elemental spells when you dont want to bother transforming.

Still have the game. Of all the breath of fire games, it had the best fishing mini game. And the dragon gene system, that isn't mentioned for some reason was one of the more fun takes on dragon transformation powers Ryu learns later on. Kind of a nod to the shaman system used in Breath of Fire 2 since it allowed you to try out gene combinations for different dragon forms/ powers.

So. I rented this from Hollywood Video back in the day. I grew up on SNES rpgs so it was a series that was near and dear to me. I re-rented it some 4 times in a row. At the store I used, you could re-rent without bringing the copy in. I tried to do that and they said I had already returned it. I asked them to double check, they confirmed it. I went home to my apparently (nearly) new copy of Breath of Fire 3 that I had gotten for around $20 in rental fees.

The Dragon Pygmy concept art is what I've been using since forever as my YT Channel's little watermark on my videos x) It's soo kyoot.
Chubby leg-less dragon with a mischievous smile.
Breath of Fire 1 & 2 was one of those games I branched out into during my teenage years because I wanted to find an RPG that I could call " _Mine_ " as everyone else was huge fans of FF, and sure, Final Fantasy is great but, I wanted something new, something special. Unfortunately, in both games I got completely stuck in similar places in both games and was unable to progress or even had any idea on how to progress further so I dropped both those games. It's been around, 15 years since I last played them, aside from like a few years ago when I played BoF1 lightly at the start, or when I gave BoF3 a try.
Good RPG's that I should had played years ago.

BOF 3 is a good game. I like 2 better, personally, but both are proud parts of my game collection. One thing to note, 3 does have rather clunky 3D level design. Granted, it isn't as hideous as some might make it out to be, but you do get the feeling all is built out of DUPLO blocks with some covering sauce. The spritework is good though. But the damn Dolphin.... FTR, first time a game was shipped with an Australian to English encounter specific translation option. Tough boss too.

I love the tone and scope of the story and the gameplay and that’s saying a lot I’m typically a final fantasy fanboy

I have played through this game so many times. One thing the Breath of Fire series likes to do is make one non-Ryu character who looks weak turn into the strongest character using some in game system. For this game it is Peco and he just destroys everything when you build him properly and put him in the right formation.

I had such a different experience than yours, heh, but that might go without saying 20+ years after the fact and when I was 12. I was on constant defense for it and had to agree with many points against it.
-Everyone thought the music sounded like misplaced elevator music and too often you'd be trapped listening to a single track for a very long time. You were desperate to find that save point.
-There were plenty of mazelike dungeons and some force you to take chances that might send you back to the beginning. Padding of the worst kind.
-The game was full of palette swap enemies.
    - Way too many times where unless you have a strategy guide or the internet (and most people back then didn't) you were SOL and had to just run around and exhaust every possibility.
    - The sprites aged well. The backgrounds and 3d elements aged super poorly. Even back in the day, having to spend time in areas where there were there three or four textures used to cover a huge area or dungeon was an eyesore.
Compare to many rpg's that had the pre-rendered backgrounds, BOF3 wasn't wowing anyone.-

BoF3 is for sure in top 10 of my favorite games ever. And while I like the characters in BoF2 more, that game has a bit more issues then this one, and for sure the enemy scaling is much improved. Its just a shame we are very unlikely to see another game like this ever again, as the game industry has moved to far away from things like it.

So many good memories playing this, love the dragon system and quirkiness of the story.

I love the 4th one, my Potrait is even the only Character, that is the same Person in the hole Series :>
The second one was also a lot of fun.
Only the first one wasnt playable, because there Stuff like "wtr kgr" to search for.

Awww, Breath of Fire 3! I love this game so much. :D It would be fun to see a remake in the future. On the other hand, the game is already perfect the way it is.. But seeing every character in glorious 3D would be nice, even though I prefer pixelated Sprites in general. :)

2016 for PSP? PSP was discontinued in NA in 2014. I recall playing this game on my PSP in 2007. Seemed faithful to the original, though it had been some years since i last played this on the PS1. great game overall. Loved the review.

BoF3 is my favorite game of all time. I don't say that facetiously. I literally mean it's my #1, followed by Chrono Trigger and SotN.

Literally one of my favorite games ever. Modern day RPGs still don't hold up to this. Just gotta keep it simple.

I have really enjoyed your dive into the BoF series, I really enjoy this series despite some of its flaws and have agreed with your videos. I think you should try to finish it out with IV and V. Both are really good entries as well, although V is very different from the other games and some of the fans didn't care for it (I thought it was great!). I know it's a bit of a task but hopefully you will finish off the last two games for the series, no the "6th" game does not exist and we should never pretend it does.

This game didn't too many spectacular things when compared to other RPGs at the time but it's a really fun game and the characters are really charming. Momo is my favorite. Too bad I never finished it. When I was a kid I got stuck in the stupid desert area where you had to follow the stars to get to the end. I quit after that. I may start a new play through and actually finish it soon though

I remember the music being so good and jazzy in some sections that my liked a few of the tunes even and made turn up the volume on the tv.

Great review, as always. I definitely prefer the PSX BoFs to the SNES ones, but they are all fun and SNES is still my favorite console.

You got the PSP version release wrong, It came out in 2006 in America. In 2016 they re-released it on the PSN, which was higly requested since BoF4 was already available there for a long time.

Starting the game out as a freaking dragon burninating everything to ash is one of the best hooks I’ve seen in a JRPG, ayup.
