Definitely one of my most favorite rpgs from back in the days, ty for making this one. So much nostalgia
I'm glad this video got made. BoF3 is one of my all time favorite RPGs. I've played through this game so many times over the years since it came out, finally got a Goo King Sword about 12 years ago. I feel like 4 did a lot of stuff better, but the story didn't quite hold up as strongly and the dragon system was nowhere near as good as 3's.
I got Goo King Sword after fighting my first goo king (1st playthrough), I laughed
@@Oddragnar Lucky SoB. I went 13 years give or take a few before I got mine legitimately.
Same man. Best game, i reolay it at least once a year with about 40 playthroughs so far. I try a new goal every time, and last goal I grinded out as close as I could get to a 100% completion game. All chars lvl capped, best equips, one of each weapon, armour etc where possible, maxed masters etc. I gotta say, gooking sword grind sucked. Dragonfang grind sucked the most by far though. God damn
goo king sword is a myth. stop.
@@richardleston5237 We're not on early 00s message boards any more. Knock it off.
I swear man, you should have at leats 500k subs, the content is so worth it. Great work as always. Out of curiosity, ever though of doind some Fire Emblems?
Fire Emblem is absolutely on the queue. I just need to wrap up some series first (like BoF... have Dragon Quarter left)
Yah been following oni for awhile dude puts in alot work, great vid again thanks for the upload for a classic title love me so bof
@@OniBlackMage if I ever needed another reason to live, you have given me another one, my dude.
@@OniBlackMage any chance for more suikoden content?
The only bad thing about this game is to only being able to have 3 party members... All of them are AWESOME! It was very nice the way they did in BoF 4, having all the members divided in front and back row
I dont see anywhere near enough content about this absolute classic.
The storyline alone makes it one of my favorite RPGs, add in the dragon Gene mixing system it's strait up a masterpiece
I'd love to see the game stays an underrated game, part of the myth behind this and BoF IV is that it's not known by many people these days and you don't see it plastered and watered down everywhere
yes unfortunately I think this game came out at the same time ff7 came out
@@kcidd12 almost 8 months after
Way better then final fantasy
My sister's favorite RPG, possibly game, of all time. Her and I played this when I was around 12 and her 13, and I remember that I accidently saved over her save one time! I was so in the habit of going through the menu that I made a mistake and her yknow, 60 hour save file was gone forever. I felt so bad lol
"Resourcefully sneaking into McNeil Manor..." Literally Rei falling through a wall 😂
Fantastic recap. This BoF was really close to my childhood, I love it so much.
this is one of my favorite games of all time.
I loved going to the mall and seeing what I could find at the Electronics Boutique.
found out about some weird games that way
This is my favorite Breath of Fire game, my favorite JRPG is Star Ocean the Second Story. Can’t wait for that recap.
It's been over 20 years since I've played this, I'm shocked by how much went over my head as a kid.
Play it again! It's amazing!!!! Try getting a perfect file. Challenging as all hell.
Highlights:
2:56-2:57-...What?
5:08-Research purposes, *again?!* Ok.
15:40-Another one bites the dust.
16:26-*Manly Tears!*
21:55-Spider-Man!
*Spider-Man appears to give advice as said in Family Guy*
Spider-Man: Everybody gets one.
24:32-*NIGHTMARE FUEL*
24:53-24:54-Whoa! Her sister? Didn’t see that coming.
*Bonus*
Belldandy is a much better Goddess than Myria.

Thanks for what you do. These recapitations help me appreciate my favourite games even more
Used to love playing this game just for the fishing, I could spend days fishing there
Last year, for the first time in over 20 years, when playing this game i got the Goo King Sword. It's was a very lucky find. I was happy but also sad, because im finding every thing there is to find of this game. I miss breath of fire a lot.
Did you get the dragon claws for peco? Those took me the longest to drop from the fire/ice drakes. Nina's ultimate armor was another annoying drop too, but finally beating the Arch Mage, getting Rei ultimate weapon, an Berserkers were my final challenge. It's surreal realizing that you 100% a game that's been with you for so long
@@nobodyspecial115 Yes i did, along with the LifeStealer for Rei, And the Rufad Spear for Garr
This battle system needs a come back. Love the fact that the party fight on the same grounds as your given path.
That was a extremely overlooked mechanic, I always thought it was awesome how there's no cutaway to a generic background. Not to mention party formations with their own benefits really expanded the combat to feel more real, like it wasn't just a random battle but a foe standing in your way.
The tapestry in the intro is a depiction of the first game's final battle, so i've always believed BoF3 is a sequel to 1, not sure how 2 would fit in the timeline though
Great work as always buddy
From what I’m told, 2 takes place 500 years after 1, so, logically, 3 takes place a long time after 2.
@@Kasaaz really? Never heard of that. Funny how there can be publishing issues within the same company huh?
@@whatevr99 makes sense with the Windyans losing their flying power over many generations; BOF3 Nina can't fly at all by this point
What wahtevr99 is correct. 2 takes place 500 years after 1 and Deathevn in 2, the final big bad is a child of the boss of 1. And the final boss of 1 was misnamed in english as Tyr due to character restraints for names. Original name is Myrria, the final boss of 3. And Deis refesr to Myrria as sister, so quite possibly they are two parts of the same whole, like Ryu and Fou-lu in 4, so the theory that 4 is a prequal has some footholds. And DQ is after 3 since civilization was forced underground, possibly due to a certain dessert a certain goddess was holding back reaching over across the great sea.
@@jamesdickens3120 come to think of it, 4 is pretty much a huge desert, if it is a prequel it would mean that was the desert Myria was holding back all along. It also makes sense with 4 being the techno age mentioned in 3
This series is as interesting as it is confusing lol
Great Recapitation as always! This one was my favorite in the series. Kinda like Persona 3 or Castlevania SOTN, I think this is the one that really kinda changed and solidified the format of the series for the better.
Yay!!! I have been waiting for this! Thank you! 🙌🏽
Man I really wish they would port this game to steam. It is one of the first jrpgs I ever played, and by far one of my favorites
My first JRPG too! Feel in love with the genre instantly
I laughed out loud at the chickens bit. Good include OBM
This game is awesome, and the nostalgia makes me cry a little. This game was from a time when I could hang out with my best friends a couple of times a week instead of a couple of times a year...
Possibly my favorite entry in what is possibly my favorite video game franchise. Nothing pains me more than acknowledging this series's demise (Hiatus?).
For real I finished this game like 7 times and to this date still can beat the story of today's RPGs..
The twist and turn of events how the world is built and how the party interact with each other was just beautiful.
this is one of those underrated jrpgs that you just have to play, i got lucky and got this game for 1$ at a yard sale when i was younger and this was prolly the best game ive ever found having no idea how legendary how this game was going to be lol
That damn desert part... It took me two entire days to get through that part when I was a Kid because I didn't understand the directions
BoF3 is one of the best RPG's ever in my opinion and your patented recaptiation did it a great service. Thank you
Notification squad Represent!
OBM always has these little nods in his videos. I caught that Power Rangers Zeo reference at 19:41
The myria boss fight was a bit of nightmare fuel with how graphic her attacks were. The sprite work was just amazing in this game.
I swear I've not been getting notifications from you I can't believe I missed this. BoF3 is one of my favorite games and I've been waiting for this!
Feels like im playing this great game again back in my childhood. Thanks for the superb recap .
Thank you RUclips algorithm for fueling my Breath Of Fire 3 love.
Love this game. I bought a PS1 physical copy after not playing it for fifteen years roughly, just as good as I remembered. I beat it a month ago and started it over again trying to get a better time and using different masters. There’s quite a bit of replay value, even just simply by changing up mains and masters. My team ended up very different this time, but not as good as my first playthrough. Go figure.
Ahh, good ole BoF 3. I haven't spent as much time on this one as I have some of the other BoFs, I still love this one a lot. A coming of age tale, of learning that all actions have consequences, and sometimes the innocent suffer from actions undertaken with the best of intentions; also the importance of responsibility is touched upon powerfully right there at the end. Yggdrasil also accomplished his mission. At the very end of the game, we observe a sproutling of a new Yggdrasil tree, planted somewhere in the desert with the intent of spreading life to it once again.
Thank you for your RECAPitation. I'll rendezvous with you on the next battlefield.
Lulz I experienced throughout:
1.) ... walk in on the current McNeila getting some... nighttime exercise. This was a great, big lul.
2.) ... copious amounts of reference material for... research purposes. I giggled.
3.) ... the group makes some legendary shisu so good it makes grown men cry with national pride. Big lul.
This is my favourite game of all time, with the possible exception of Wild Arms or Alundra. I sunk hours and hours into this game when I was 12. I still remember how insanely happy I was on getting the Goo King Sword on my second encounter with the Goo King. Good times
This game single handedly shaped my love for pixel art and RPGs, and forced me to learn basic level english as a kid. Lovely characters, amazing story and cool dragons. An all time favourite of mine, and an actually great game to boot.
It pains me how much the series has fallen into oblivion. I'll never forgive Capcom for killing it so unceremoniously.
Also, the australian-pink-mecha-terrorist-dolphin is one of the greatest things ever created.
This was an amazing recap! Thank you so much!!
Funny thing I started watching a TAS run of this last night!
Thank you so much for the recapitulation!
Thanks for recap, got halfway through the game but had to bail, needed a short summary so i could see last half :)
I've been waiting for this one for years. My favorite BoF game
Nice! I must have missed the streams. That sucks. Must be subbed to too many channels, they all get muddled together in my head. Hopefully he enjoyed this more than BoF2, which was still a great game imho.
So, did no one else catch the Soul Calibur references in this summary? Haha
Thank you for these videos, by the way! So much nostalgia, not to mention your summaries have helped fill in more gaps in my memory/knowledge of these games than I realized I had.
Thank YOU for noticing the references 😁
@@OniBlackMage Those lines are too iconic to miss! Or maybe that particular fighter wasn't as popular as I originally thought :(
Wow I just watched your other breath of fire videos for the first time just two days ago, talk about perfect timing
I just wanted you to know I fucking love your channel and watch every video I come across
This game's story still holds up really well since it's overarching story isn't a battle of good and evil. Evil exists in the world to be sure, but the source of the conflict isn't simply because of some villain trying to take over the world. In most any other story Myria would be revealed to just a controlling sociopath. In this game she instead turns out to be someone who actually does have good intentions, the problem is that she wants a world of stagnancy because she feels mortals can't be left to their own devices.
Myria's defeat even paints her in a sympathetic light as she wonders if everything she did was for nothing and how the world will survive without her.
And if BOF 4 is in the same timeline there is even merit to Myria's argument as the world is mostly desert there now.
Ummm Myria's a parasitic deity that lives off of the life energy siphoned from her followers, hence the zombie like people on the other side. She took out any who could stop her from turning the world into her personal plaything. She simply implies that she is trying to stop the desert but given the fact that it's always where they've lived makes that hard to believe. The first game Deis live in a floating castle in the desert (sound familiar) in the 2nd game her temple is still in the desert although not flying anymore. Coincidentally in the 3rd game Myria taken up residence in a flying castle in the desert and Deis is imprisoned... Hmmmm, sounds like Myria locked her sister up an is squatting in her castle. Unfortunately Myria needs prayers an followers for greater power an when you try to bring a bunch of people into a desert no matter how advanced they are the desert slowly kills them off. I feel like Myria by the end is suffering from a reverse of Stockholm syndrome where she's actually started to believe her lie that she's doing this all for "her children"
@@cac1700 but it's stated multiple times throughout 4 that it's taking place in a parallel universe separate from the first 3 games universe.
@@nobodyspecial115 The reverse of Stockholm Syndrome is actually called the Lima Syndrome.
@@dragonstormx ah didn't know it had it's own classification
They don’t make them like this anymore. This is my favorite game tied at 1st place with Chrono trigger.
I played this game A LOT back in the day. So many fond memories. I know exactly where I bought this game. It was random. I don’t know what I wanted. But I knew I was going to buy a game before I left. It was 40$ At a Best Buy. In the 90’s the video game aisle was huge. If you didn’t read about the game in a magazine. You took a chance by the cover art and reading the summary on the back.
I've been waiting for this one a long time.
Such an underappreciated series. If there's anything I want capcom to bring back, it is Breath of Fire. Breath of Fire 2 was my childhood RPG alongside Baldur's Gate. They introduced the genres of JRPG and WRPG to me respectively. While I love Breath of Fire 2 for nostalgia's sake, I think Breath of Fire 3 is possibly the best in the series. 4 is almost as good, it certainly isn't as 'traditional' as 3 but I still love it. 5, is controversial, but I absolutely loved it. Dragon Quarter might be my favourite depending on the day of the week, it is either that or 3. I love how the theme of a dark, depressing, harsh, unfair, cruel world is replicated in the extremely punishing dungeon crawler gameplay (alongside the best OST in the series) but I understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea. 2 is a better version of 1 and let's forget 6 exists.
I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who liked Dragon Quarter, I really felt that it took part in a parallel universe were the war between the dragon clans took a severe curbstomp unlike number 1 where things got fixed eventually. And number 6 , yeah let's forget that even existed.
What Ryu is your favorite:
Scion (1)
Warrior (2)
Paladin (3)
Mystic (4)
Freelancer (5)
The Adventure of Paladin Ryu
"The Dragons were SERIOUSLY WOUNDED, BUT THE SOUL STILL BURNS! FINAL BATTLE...... FIGHT!!!!!"
Whoever liked this dumb comment is a real OG. Soul Calibur FTW
i happened to stumble upon a livestream for this game on tiktok so i just HAD TO KNOW WHAT WAS UP!!! gosh this game sounds so cool
Honestly the first BoF game I played, gotta thank the PSP for that
I know the game designers have shot this down, but I don't care--my head canon is still IV -> I -> II -> III -> V. It makes sense to me that IV is the prequel to the whole series, explaining how the Brood obtained the power of dragon gods, the origin of Deis, and presumably Yuna creates Myria as the result of his experiments. Then the original BoF happens when there are two Brood tribes at the height of their power; II takes place later on after the Brood have become peaceful; III takes place centuries after II. At the end of III the Desert of Death slowly spreads across the world and humanity flees underground while Yggdrasil gradually rebuilds nature up above, and this is when V happens.
I've always felt that V was the first one. Because in II you work you're way down a tower into the depths and in V you're working your way up
I always assumed this one was way past the 2nd game, Myria finally awoke so many centuries after Evan's defeat and instantly began her campaign to eliminate the Brood. With them gone her control was absolute. I always figured 500 years for her to awake an then 400 years of her rule puts BoF 3 about 900 years after BoF 2 an 1400 after the first game. If this series ever comes back they should do a prequel where the original hero an 7 companions lock Myria away with the goddess keys.
Strangers of paradise pls.
One of my favorites, deserves to be on all systems.
I've been waiting for this!
The interesting thing is that the final boss for 3 is supposedly the mother of the final boss from 2. Although I don't know how that effects the timeline or not but figured I'd point that info out.
I always thought all five games was on one world. Four is the prequel, shows how the gods came and how Myria was made. Then its one, two, and three. The world slowly turns into a desert after three which forces the humans underground. Peco slowly turns the surface back into a green world and that's when five takes place.
Man. I miss this one very, very much.
one of my absolute favorite games. may mains were ryu, rei and momo
i played this in the 90s, 1996, i think. its one of the best jrpgs of the era, bested only by ff6
Should've added that Rei got back at Loki by attacking him for being set up in the past, haha. XD
I never got past the desert section so it's good to know what happens after, thanks Oni!
Yeah there is a misstep or something in the directions you get or something but eventually I got past that damn desert of death. Its gunna kinda piss you off when you realize the teleporter in the container yard actually takes you across the desert but that damn shipping container is in your way and you can only break it from one side.....after you cross the desert.
Just the way Peco shot up in prominence was amazing to me.
Wow it's been a while for a new one. Yey.
It always bothered me that the intro cutscene with Mogu and Gary is not shown in the game itself - you have to stay idle on the title screen for it to play. It contains a lot of ground work for how Chrysm Ore functions in the world.
I love Peco he's an omniscient tree god, I always make him insanely powerful, I don't care if he starts at level 1.
New to this channel. This is good.
The story sounded so much better than I remember it as a child.
Just repurchased this for the PSP and PS1. It is *still* freaking amazing. I think the game plays a little smoother on the PS1, but the PSP version is fine - although when it comes to the PSP I think may run better on a 2000 or 3000 model. I remember it running worse on a PSP I had years ago, and that may have been a 1000 model which has less ram. That said, this along with Wild Arms and Wild Arms 2, I'd take these over the PS1 Final Fantasies any day. I want to get BoFIV here, but I was never as big on IV as I was III.
One of the best RPGs ever made. Xenogears and BoF3 are top 3 in my life.
Man I loved this game as a kid.
rei has always been my favorite character in bofIII
Love these videos. Try putting some gameplay of you playing.
Garr never said "time to die". that was a translation error in the game. When Garr became stone, his last words were "finally, peace".
I would like to see a properly done sequel to this game in the future, I dont care if it isn't from capcom since they seem to have their priorities somewhere else.
That or going back to the original hero an 7 companions who locked Myria away the first time using the 6 goddess keys an stopping the civil war between the light an dark dragon clans.
It is definitely a distant sequel to the second game.
It even has a literal recurring party member.
15:03
Deis: "You must release me"
Garr: "Release Deis nuts in you"
Grow up!
THANKS so much for the review I remember I beat this game but the story was so bland cant remember any of it. Gunna do a Breath of fire binge and hopefully remember!
This game feels like a sequel to Breath of Fire 1 and the Breath of Fire 4 feels like a prequel since it seems to resemble the age of technology
I believe the order goes 4>1>2>3, with Dragon Quarter being set in an alternate timeline.
Impressed by how gorgeous this game looks. Esp compared to 4. Is this a updated version?
There was a port to PSP but this is the original 1997 PS1 release. The sprite art and animation is just that good
@@OniBlackMage tyty yeah this game is amazing if the world wasn't so obsessed with 3d at the time I think this game would be more well remembered for that alone though this story was probably their best yet!
This is actually what drew me to this game was how beautiful it looked in a pool of 3d polygons that square was doing at the time
I tried beating this game at least 3 times but my save file always disappeared for some reason, I was WAY too young to understand the whole concept of this story thank you for your recap!
Does anybody know why they decided to make the goddess lady with upside-down wings?
It's symbolic of Myria's twisted nature. She claims to protect yet she effectively impeded humanity. She's like a corrupt politician basically.
This is the best one, THE BEST ONE! Series goes downhill from here, 4 is a step down, 5 had them kinda step to the side and accidentally tumble off an f ing cliff and the series has been dead ever since, don't even see them in cameos.
This is my first BoF game and my most favorite. It's just too bad I never got to own a copy 😢. Capcom should release a BoF collection on consoles and on steam. I'm really dying to play them all again.
Best rpg of all time undoubtedly
I first played this game on the same day that the TV show "Futurama" aired its pilot, I rented it as the first RPG I had played on the PlayStation. It is my favorite PS1 RPG, but there are better ones for the system, I know. It was a big deal, but at the time I still liked the Simpsons better.
Edit: Pallet is giving off strong Megaman vibes in this game, and the money is also Zenny, so did these two properties try to take place in the same universe? That could have been cool.
Also Edit: This game was part of most of our childhoods, we all seem to have fallen in love with this game... Because it's a great game!
Strange, I remember a point in this story where the party got lost walking aimlessly for weeks in the desert... weird
4:06 Imagine how much hassle could've been saved if Nina wasn't a complete idiot lol
Man this game was long... I need to play it again
Ah my favorite game of all time ❤
My favourite rpg and i wish they would make more.
An honest to God breath of fire 5!!! Not dragon quarter a breath of fire tale but BREATH OF FIRE 5!!!
@@Lownamebrand I really liked BOF5. But it felt more like a spin off series. BOF3 will always be #1. This recap was awesome btw.
One of the greatest jrpgs
Bof3 is special, nothing more needs to be said.
I played this on PSP and loved it
hooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYEEEEAH! I have literal HUNDREDS of hours in this game figuring out different combos and all that what not but still had no idea what’s going…like, is that man banging that cow!? Is that the horse jerkass from Zelda 2?!
I really freakin needed this, is what I’m saying.
this game was pretty much perfect the way it is though i do hope we get a legit remakes of these series and the only thing im really dissapointed about BOF 3 is WTF is beyond the northern checkpoint with it being the only area you cannot access while hinting at there is other cities beyond it.
That could be solved with a remake ala Final Fantasy 7, not asking for the same battle system mind you.
