My father was only six years old when your grandfather served in the Korean War, and his selflessness played a vital role in creating the South Korea we know today. I am grateful for his service and inspired by his and other Marines and US Solders example, which led me to follow in their footsteps by joining the Marine Corps and served Iraq. My hope is that one day the children of Iraq will experience the same freedom that I am fortunate to enjoy today here in AMAZING USA!!. Thank you for your grandfather's service and sacrifice.
I'm sure your grandfather would truly connect with your SOS breakfast given the cold environment you had it in and how it would have related to a cold winter morn in Korea. My dad too served in the Korean war from August 1950 - '51. My hat is off to them for their service to our country.
SOS is one of my all time favorites and there are 3 restaurants within 20 miles that serve it. Another favorite is Chorizo sausage and gravy thanks to Sarah's recipe but I thicken it with shredded cheese. I make it often.
My father, also in the Marines during the Chosin Reservoir hellish battles in Korea 1951 introduced my brothers and I to SOS. While it is tasty for me its definitely the memories that make it so special!
My Mom made chipped beef with gravy. I haven't thought of that for years. It was so good. I even remember the little glass jar it came in with a blue lid. I loved your story of the pony express and the thought of them running their horses through the land where you were standing and traveling. You are a wonderful story teller. Thank you.
As always, I enjoyed this video. If I were there I'd be going to climb that sharkstooth looking peak. Winter is the time to climb desert peaks. I appreciate you mentioning your mom and pa paw. My dad is a Korean War veteran as well. He is still kicking at 93. We owe our freedoms to this greatest generation. Sorry to hear about your MSR. Kinda surprised. I have a Pocket Rocket and love it but is is more of a backpacking stove rather than for overlanding.
I felt very nostalgic watching you make SOS as my grandad use to make it for me when I was a kid. Almost teared up a bit on the Korean War part. My grandad was also part of that. I recent got some pics of his ship going through the Panama Canal heading over there.
My grandmother said when my grandfather returned from world war brought the recipe she would soak the corned beef hour or two to bring the salt content down .if you want to jazz it up crumble blue cheese on it.
I used to have a very nice 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro in Voodoo Blue that I wanted to make into an Overland Adventure truck. My income drastically dropped, and I had to get an old Ram 1500 to get out from under payments. I so want to get another Toyota & hopefully a Tundra. One of my factors in liking Toyota products is how dog gone reliable your 4Runner has been! It's definitely proven itself!
That's really cool that you can ride out to old Pony Express stations. Have you ever tried retracing parts of the Oregon Trail? That's something that I've always wanted to try to do if I were to get out west for an extended period of time.
Cheers to Grandfathers. I miss mine, as well...he was a super cool guy. Yours looks mighty handsome in his Marine dress blues & can see a bit of you in him. He'd be proud you honored him in this video !
My favorite show from my childhood was The Lone Ranger and The A-Team! Have you watched that? I haven’t watched The Young Riders but will definitely look it up. Thank you for the recommendation! Stay safe and happy trails!
If I may make a humble health suggestion. Heat + anything plastic or silicone etc will leach BPAs and or other things into your food and drink. Even if it's "BPA free" it still, according to 3rd party testing, shown to leach into ones food or drink. I absolutely love the coffee setup, but my OCD kind of kicked in and I had to pass that along for what it's worth. Obviously you should do your own research, but I couldn't in good conscience not say something. Also no criticism to the video, it's fantastic and the views are amazing. Love the content!
Makes me a bit homesick. I live in Central UT but I am out in CA for a work contract. The sandy desert here is nice, but I find myself wanting a bit of snow too.
My deceased father, who was a Navy cook, & deceased grandpaw, Army cook, turned over in their grave when they saw you make this wrong 😆 ... Come to SC & I will show you how its done! Grandpa served in WW2 Germany... Pop served in Vietnam!
Maybe they did it different for the Marines hunkered in an outpost beyond front lines in Korea... As pappaw would say, "More than one way to skin a cat". 👍

My respect to your dad, Semper Fi, Marine...71 yo Navy Veteran
It's so satisfying to be in quiet remote places with vast landscapes
Mom used to make this for my brother and I. Thank you for the reminder of those moments. Safe travels.

That propane fire pit with the big cast iron skillet is just as good if not better than a black stone grill.

I have loved theis trip, especially the way you captured the feel of the history of the area.

SOS on a metal tray during my Navy days… didn’t think I’d ever miss it. Happy Trails
You can't beat a good serving of SOS. My grandpa made the best. The PET is a fun trail. Great episode.
Used to make that a lot when my kids were little for supper. Good stuff.
Great video, I miss your daughter, she’s great😎😎⭐️⭐️🤩🤩❄️❄️

Thats the exact coffee grinder I use. Have had it for years and it's still working like new!
Wonderful episode, Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!

I loved that show!!!
Right?! We found it on the Roku channel and just started watching it with Caroline. :D

I can complete relate to smells triggering memories. Especially fond memories. Thanks for sharing.
Man, that chipped beef and gravy brings back some memories, I'm gonna have to mix up a batch soon. Great video work and content as always. 💯
Another cool adventure in the snow!
I ate it many times for midnight meal at the chow hall on base in the UK. Fills u up and kept u warm for the flightline.
OM NOM NOM Dried Beef Gravy, on anything, but especially on toasted Home Made bread is among the best meals.

Very well done! I like the solo trips they are inspiring

Thanks so much. Wish he could see the adventures we're on now...

Haven't had 5hit on a shingle in a few years. Gonna have to whip some up.

Every time I see that frozen mud, reminds me of pykrete
I love it out there. Could show you some cool places if you want to roll out that way together sometime
Jack Evans was your grandfather? Well, that's a good Welsh name 👍🏻😁👍🏻
I have one of those propane firepits. What grill is that? I like this idea.
In Australia, the SOS meal means Vegemite on toast.
I've tried it... I think it deserves the name more than this meal! LOL Definitely an acquired taste I haven't achieved.
Yay!
Hello, we love you video's! What kind of propane campfire is that and where did you get the grill top for it?
Thanks for your time.
Howard
Great video...where you get that table from
I may have missed a few episodes, but what every happened with your RV disaster?
The next time you make SOS, place a fried egg on each "shingle", and then bury it in gravy... OMG!!!
Just wondering what you are filming with? The portion with the steak was very clear.
Is there a rating system on these roads? I love getting on those back roads but have no overlanding technical skills. Are some of these trails basic?
Tabasco sauce, buddy...
Nice videos love the content what year and how many miles on your 4 runner?
Yeah well them Army cooks didn't lose the SOS recipe up through the Nam era

Dried beef sucks, use salami
That's a great idea! More flavor... I also want to do it with a spicy sausage and someone else challenged me to try it with spam. So many ways.
