Can A Trekking Pole Make My Electric Dirtsurfer Easier To Ride?

  • My Electric Dirtsurfer is definitely the most interesting DIY electric skateboard projects I've built! As I've learned with my long distance riding, it's extremely hard on the legs; and trying to start from a standstill without something to push off from is a PITA! My solution is to use a trekking pole to provide a stable third contact point with the ground to stabilize my balance while I hit the accelerator. Once the electric dirtsurfer gets up to speed, I can just tuck the pole under my arm until it's time to stop & dismount again! This honestly solves one of the biggest problems I had with riding my dirtsurfer on trails!

    Wooo that looks like a pain to ride man. Love your determination! I too am quite stubborn.

    Love this. I had a dirtsurfer about 15 years ago and I remember just how hard the thing was to ride. I never did get to the place where I could kick it under my own power on flat ground. Way back then I thought "this thing would be super fun if it were self-powered" so it's super fun to see that someone has gone and done that.
    One thing that may help you start from a stop is to look up! I learned this riding longboards. If you're looking at your feet, it's way harder to find your balance point, which makes sense because you're literally moving your center of gravity forward by looking down. So maybe give that a try. Look where you want to go and feel for the balance of the machine underneath you, especially now that you've got a pole to lean on.

      It's certainly interesting to ride!

    You need to invent a kickstand for Dirtsurfer !

      Yo, a kickstand that disengages as it moves forward actually sounds like a baller idea

    I would think interfacing the trekking pole with the board, (maybe into a notch or a hole), would be more helpful. Having some leverage would make it much more stable on the start, and you could use it to reduce the leg burn while riding, if needed.
    Alternatively, you could put the pole close to the board to limit the tilting, kind of lean against the pole before you start moving?

    Hey man, have you seen that big kahuna land paddle? I rode with one for a while. And yeah, it's a huge leg burn.

    I think that you should try to lower the center of gravity a bit, which should make it easier to ride. This is such a cool concept!
    Is there anything that can be done to add brakes to this?

    • @MikeInTheWoods
      @MikeInTheWoods  6 месяцев назад

      Not much I can do to lower the CoG I think. Can't mount stuff on the underside of the deck as it is very flexible and I'd get scraping.
      As for brakes, it has regen braking! Works just like an electric skateboard

    And then you can use the trekking pole as a weapon to push people outta the way. Err.... not that I would ever do that......

      It will help keep the raccoons at bay lol

    Form what I observed the instability at low speed may cause by the front deck is much higher than the rear, try to lower the deck and increase the pivoting angle of that steer 35° like a mountainboard

    • @MikeInTheWoods
      @MikeInTheWoods  6 месяцев назад +1

      Nah it's just the natural instability of a 2-wheeled PEV at slow speeds. As soon as I pick up even a jogging pace, it's much more stable lol

    The concept is great. The execution is awful. You need to move that battery lower which will change your center of gravity and help you with a bit and you have a bit too much swing on your front steering. Try stiffen it up a little bit. Think like a skateboarder.

    Hey Mike, love the perseverance and ingenuity. I've been riding an unpowered (downhill) OG Dirtsurfer since 2002 (done a fair bit of tow-behind and powerkite as well) and I know what you're going through. Stick with it bud. I can suggest a few things which should make it quite a bit easier. I'm planning an EV-hub DS project similar to your build as well. Check email.

    yeah, this just aint it. i like the concept but the execution just isnt there. not yet at least. actually i love the concept and it would work a lot better if it was "self balancing" with a retractable or maybe even spring loaded kick stand that can support you while you mount and then automatically retract when you start moving.
    really cool PEV concept you have here, even if impractical at this point in development.

      Dirtsurfers have been around for decades, this is just an electric conversion
