  • Delta's Mad Dog has been the workhorse of its fleet for decades, but new and modern aircraft have now replaced it.
This was an absolutely incredible flight experience, mainly because of how welcoming the crew was to us bloggers and avgeeks! Row 33 is well-known as the best seat on board due to its amazing view of both the engine and wing.
This may be one of (if not) the last MD-80 trip report on my channel since they will now be very hard to find in commercial service. A few airlines are left operating the type, most notably DAT (Danish Air Transport), who'd I'd love to fly, and LASER Airlines.
I hope you enjoy this Mad Dog sendoff!

I don't think there is anything better than seeing the sunset from 35000 feet. Gorgeous views. Plus, thank you MD-80 for so many years of service. Your roar will be missed.

I originally didn't like the MD 80 series because I was more into the original TriStar which was the Boeing 727. But as I flew on more of the Mad Dog flights, I grew to appreciate the aircrafts. Now, along with the 707, 727, 747, 757, and both wide- body TriStar aircrafts being the L1011 and the DC-10 / MD 11, I'm really going to miss this aircraft as well.

The Delta MD-80, in its 1980-2000 livery, was the first plane I remember ever taking. Christmas break, 1995; JFK-CAE, with a layover in ATL. The black nose cone and stripe along the windows looked incredibly sleek.

Never ever got to fly a Mad Dog! Sadly, never will :( Walked aboard a Northwest MD88 parked at the overnight gate one time way back in 97 while working for another airline at YYC. I LOVED that plane! Thank you for this. I am impressed by the rear lav size and how it looked fresh new and clean. Better than most boeings!

I couldve flown on the last Delta MD88 out of Omaha and sat in row 33E from OMA to ATL which 33E is the best seat to sit on that airplane due to it being right in front of the engine, even though chaos erupted due to james scurlock and george floyd protests that night and curfews installed, it was the first day non essential domestic travel could resume since march 16th in Omaha due to moving into Phase 2 of reopening

So the last roadway that you flew over before airport property at Dulles (Air & Space Museum Parkway), there's a car parked on the right side or the roadway next to the two museum signs - that was me! I filmed the last arriving MD-88 at Dulles. Even found the Captain of the flight on Facebook!

If you ever have a long connection at Dulles, you should visit the Smithsonian Udvar Hazy Center. It's a huge facility that has full size aircraft that can't fit in the museum downtown. It has a Concorde, the Space Shuttle Discovery, and tons of other stuff. There's also an observation deck where you can see airplanes on approach to Dulles. It just reopened but you need reservations which are free.

I flew this exact same aircraft (N900DE) on the early morning PHL-ATL leg that same day. One thing to add, this frame was the *100th MD-88* delivered new to Delta from McDonnell Douglas, of an eventual 120. The MD-80 series will always be my favorite aircraft type. I miss it already.

The MD 80s some of them were super loud but the newer versions were loud but not as loud the DC-9s those were extremely loud and so loud that it was hard to carry on a conversation in the back of those planes, the Boeing 717 those are the same engines as the 737 Next gen airplanes not too loud
