I didn’t know who she was until I watched her movie on Netflix and I fell in love with her whole vibe. I went a RUclips and listened to her battle rapping dudes and this girl was like 14 and 15 years old. Rapping with no music or writing anything down. It’s a lot of people that came from the 80’s and 90’s that pave the way for artist today and nobody gives them props or respect for making the way. But I give my respect to Roxanne for opening the door for other female MCs.
i grew up on her
I grew up listening to her she was lethal
Unfortunately pioneers hardly get the recognition they deserve. But so long as this documentary | Unsung of Roxanne Shante aka The Godmother of Hip Hop exists there will be a new generation of females that will give props and pay homage...true or facts?
Well Roxanne never gave Teena Marie or The Sequence their props for rapping. She did however give Millie Jackson props.
It's more fake people on the planet than real ones! Always know that!
I was thinking the same thing. But it seems like now they are. Which is good.
This woman is an icon. I can hear her voice in my head now as clear as 30 years ago. I'm Shante!!!
One of best female Mc of all time!!!!
❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏
Yes yes
The original female rapper!!!
The First, yes....the Best? Disagree....but she is credited and we'll respected!
Leave it out..Awful
Shanté doesn't need validation from anyone in the industry. Although so many other acts were more successful than her, we all understand how important her contributions to the formation of hip-hop was. She's moved on and she's not trying to get a second bite at the apple. Shanté has so much to be proud of.
The only reason why she didn’t the recognition is because she didn’t stay in it long enough.
She didn't write her own raps...and she's a bully..lol..lol...and a liar...lol...lol..wow lol..
Black star media Inc...lol..lol..and Hudson onion society..say she's a liar..and expose her..lol..she lied on everything she said..lol..lol..from her PhD..to her baby daddy..lol...lol...wow but she's a legend and other.
@@sayyiddbrooks3314 you kind of write like you are a little unstable. No need to have such strong feelings towards a rapper who is no longer even in the rap game anymore and hasn't been for over 30 years.
Well...how long have it been?..lol...lol..a lease over 25years..lol..lol..she is a clout chaser..and old clout chaser..lol.. you and other are like Hitler..if you tell a lie long enough..it becomes the true...not in my book.
Always always always wondered this . I met her when I was young and I cried.I get excited thinking about lol
Living icon. Yeaaaassss. Flowers times 100 are for you my queen. Yessssss
She the undisputed KWEEN OF RAP 👑👑🎙️👑👑.
Like Jalil from Whodini said, "When our careers slowed down, I was looking for loyalty in this game and it doesn't exist"
I wasnt a fan of Roxanne but u wouldn't have MC Lyte, Salt N pepa, Queen Latifah without her.
Love you Shani! ......They were just scared. All hail The Queen Of Rox!!!!
I'm a huge Shante fan. I listened to all of her music back in the day. Roxann's Revenge, Payback, Bite This and Runaway.
The Queen of Queensbridge
She is the foundation for Lil Kim, Mia X, Remy Ma and all the other Female Battle Emcees who got a sharp pen or lived that street life.
Roxanne also gave birth to Nas, Mobb Deep and all those rappers from QB Projects.
I'm a metalhead, i think Roxanne Shante is awesome
The problem was she went up against Queen Latifah and her crew upon her return. That was the nail in the coffin.
When Big Mama came out in 1992, Roxanne Shante thought all of the new crop of Female MCs would cower in fear. It backfired. Huge.
Disrespected mc lyte too
Shante' is the G.O.A.T. and all the female MC's that followed her, owe her a living
She was crushing MCs!
I love YoYo for consistently being a girl’s girl. ♥️
They couldn't handle her in no shape, form or fashion. Roxanne Roxanne. She was and is still the shyt. Battle rapper warrior much respect to you.
They should do unsung for syleena Johnson
Roxanne Shante was the 1st female battle MC..All female rappers including Queen Latifah, McLyte, Yo-Yo @ Salt-Pepa need to show some respect to the true first lady of hip-hop..
She wasn't the first female battle MC. The Funky 4 +1 Sha rock was battling and making records before Roxanne's revenge. Sha was rhyming since the 70s!!!!!!
Know your history! While I respect Roxanne, she wasn’t the first. Not mention Queen Latifah and Salt N Pepa are worthy of respect. They stayed in the game and changed. They (Salt N Pepa and Latifah) are also the first female rappers in the win a Grammy. Salt N Pepa are the first female rap act to go gold and platinum.
Also MC Lyte and YoYo have always shown respect to other female rappers
@@JLPerryTV agree
Yoyo gave her her props even after the big mama diss bc that’s what rap was about who got the best bars who can flow the hardest 💯
A Lotta Female Artist Should Acknowledge🤔Roxanne Chante More Often!!!!!
(Especially In This Day N Age😌)
If🤔Yoyo😎Can Give Her Props
Then Every1 Else Could've Done It
Outta Credibility
Shante is the truth💯
ROXANNE WILL ALWAYS BE MY FAV FEMALE RAPPER
AND KANE MY FAV MALE RAPPER
NUFF SAID!!!!!
They should do an 'Unsung' on The Lady Of Rage.
Aw gosh stop it with the one or two hit wonders unsung needs more artist now with long resumes like they did in the beginning seasons
@@anthonytaylor7928 - 2 unsung ladies? Bahamadia & Jean Grae (formerly known as What What)..... Both got mad skills and 30 year careers.
I remember when I first heard Shante Roxanne. I loved her voice and her sass. I 💯% wished that she had better representation bc she was a beast with it. Nobody could touch her so they sabotage her...to a degree. Roxanne you still here, you've gained wisdom and experience; make another album. This time, like Tina make it on your own terms.
She set this off for Female Rappers Much Love Sis From NYC ❤!
I love Roxanne shante best female artist she like a female Cassidy battle rapper
Shante is 🔥
Need an unsung on grandmaster flash and the furious five
Their in the rock n roll Hall of Fame. However they still unsung a little.
@@mostmost1 hip hop pioneers from the 70's need an unsung in my mind. Funky 4 + 1 too.
WHO CARES!!!!! OUR HIP HOP LEGENDARY JUICE CREW QUEEN MISS SHANTE 🌹 WILL ALWAYS RECIEVE MUCH ETERNAL LOVE FROM ALL US..... JUICE CREW TRUE FANS YES INDEED 💯 YES YES Y'ALL 💯🌹♥️👑♥️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
She's my number one female MC of all time. That's just my opinion.
JEALOUSY 😂
She is Lil Kim's biggest inspiration
Foxy and Queen Bee of Rap, Lil Kim have always credited her as an influence.
Post the entire episode somebody please
Sadly, she doesn't get the props she deserves
Cannnnn someone post this episode
Foxy has always mentioned & even referred to herself as the modern day Roxanne Shante. They were supposed to do a song together on THE FEVER
Yo Yo......😍💍❤️🙏
LIVE ON STAGE THAT BLACK LEATHER DRESS AWESOME HER STYLE NUMBER 1.
Well where have I seen this before hmm
She lied and stated she had her phd and in conflict with her record label.cause in her contract there was a clause stating the would play for her education SHE LIED
She looked just like monique
0:06 thats such a wrong portrail at that point in time... rage, monie, fox??? Hell nah should of been Latifah, Monie & Lyte... fox didnt come out til 96 And Rage only had one hit..
As I’m concerned, she wasn’t the first female rapper. Millie Jackson did rapping, Teena Marie did a rap song and was amazing, and The Sequence did a rap song before Roxanne Shanté came out. And furthermore, you have to stay in the music game if you want to have a lot of recognition.
JLPerryTV you are being petty! Teena Marie and Millie Jackson are R&B acts. You must know that but you are all about making your point. If you don’t like Roxanne Shante....fine! But don’t be ridiculous.
Derrick Leachman I didn’t say they were rappers, I said they did rapping. There was also another called Blondie who rapped on her song “Rapture” (1980). The point is this... Stop thinking you are the “first” to do something and everyone HAS to look up to you. I don’t have anything against Roxanne, but it is bold to say you weren’t getting recognition from later female rappers as if everyone is supposed to give her recognition or say that they were inspired by her
@@JLPerryTV I feel that way about Lil Kim! Everyone does not have to look up to Kim when there were dozens of female rappers that were out before her, the same time as her and after her. However, Roxanne Shante` don't get the respect or recognition she deserves regardless if she was consistent or not. She held her own around the fellas and shined!
True story..
@@JLPerryTV true story
Of course that don’t like you! You dissed every one of them in Big Mama! Yo-yo is a class act beautiful woman because Shante ate her up😂
Her song Brothers ain't shitt was censured
It’s because she’s an empath.
She's a one hit wonder that's way.
roxanne shante is the glue of female rap im sorry
she was hot
She was a gimmick back in 84.. utfo put her out to start a rap war..hasn't done anything significant other than that
She wasn't a gimmick. You might be thinking about The Real Roxanne.
shidd she was the truth
she wasnt humble, she wasnt a girls girl.
No disrespect, but she was always irritating. I never liked her voice.
What bothered me the most about her was everytime someone made a hit record she would immediately come up with an insulting, unoriginal version over the same beat, slightly changing the lyrics. That took very little imagination, was not artistic and lacked creativity. She was a one trick pony - even biting the name Roxanne from UTFO when she dissed them using the exact same method. Like a Pat Boone of rap, mixed with Don Rickles, she was just trying too hard with no clear artistic direction of her own trying to mock others.
I am a fan of battle rap, but it is corny and cynical to rap for the sole purpose of discrediting other emcees who are making hits just because you can't develop commercially succesful concepts of your own and have nothing better to do.
She had talent but squandered it by being so one dimensional and trying to exploit and capitalize off of the success of other artists. That was a lazy approach as an emcee..
Artists like Salt -N-Pepa were light-years better. That is why Shante doesn't get l Iove from the game; she dissed people just to come up off of their creativity by stealing their work, exploiting them and, in doing so, made a lot of enemies in the industry. KRS smoked her with one line.
She was always envious, trying to tear down others on wax. Unprovoked, she dissed everyone she could starting beef just to get fame off of thier success. It worked - in the short term. Long term, not so much.
She even lied about her education with that Ph.D. scandal. When caught, she doubled down.
In my opinion, those are the REAL reasons why she is not as loved as Lyte, Latifah, Yo-Yo and others.
Big up the original
shante was boss when it came to the girls.....the rest huddled together in a pack for safety
