    Great tips -- especially the use of masking tape as a spare pair of hands, and using flatwashers to shim the magnetic catch side so that it's level.
    Pre-drilling is also highly recommended (without this the self-tapping screws will wobble all over and fall out.
    My model was the "Milano", which is comparable to the Siera except you provide the measurements and the factory does the cutting. If you're not confident of your measurements, go with the Sierra model.
    I also recommend that, after installing the screen cassette piece, dry-fitting the top, bottom, and magnetic side pieces before doing ANY drilling / screwing

    Great video! I got some washers handy just in case I needed to fill the gap between the side track and door frame. This is ideal for the door on our new second story balcony. The carpenter replaced a window with a door , but there isn't enough space for the traditional hinged screen door and that screen that you split to walk out just doesn't seem to long lasting. I will be installing one of these in the spring.

    The pro tips are great: 1/8" offset of the clips to allow clips to rock and lock; washer spacers to compensate for irregular door frame to ensure full mating of magnetic strips; and filler strip to meet height limits. All nice stuff to know BEFORE I get started. I've got much more confidence to proceed with this project now.
    Genius should just include this tutorial in their manual.

    Great video! The only thing I noticed is when installing the side rail, it is supposed to go behind (to the left of) and over the bottom guide rail (where you see the flanges of the side rail in front and behind the bottom guide rail), which I think you did but just didn't mention. ALSO, and more importantly, the top of the side rail is supposed to be slid INTO the top guide rail, from an angle, to where it's on the INSIDE of the top guide rail flanges (so you won't see the side rail at the top, only the top guide rail). It looked to me like you put the side rail behind (to the left) of the top guide rail which also left a space at the top. Just an FYI for others. Thanks for the great video!

      I thought the same thing when I installed mine. We haven't had an issue yet but with our house you have to step up about 6 inches to come in the front door. If the base of the door was more flush with the ground and not as much of a step I could definitely see an issue.

    The retractable doors' bottom track looks like a tripping hazard. Look at the sill. Great job installing but, I would not recommend installing this type of screen door with that sill. I think you are asking for trouble. Not only could someone trip, but if you need to truck in or out of the house, the bottom track will have to be removed.

  • @cire5572

    I'm looking for some type of screen door like this that easy to open & close for my cottage. I'm not sure this one would be a good option because every time I pop in & out of the door in my wheelchair I'd be apt to bend the bottom track.
    Might have to go with something like the magnetic screen doors but they don't look like they close along the bottom. We have a lot of mosquitoes so they would just enter there.
    Do you have any suggestions for something that would be good?

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  6 лет назад

      Your best bet may be a swinging type door with an auto-closer, something similar to this: amzn.to/2vm50rj The track on this door would be very hard, if not impossible to get a wheelchair over and the wheels may over time damage the track.

    A question please
    If the bottom of my door is not fair and has a slope what should one do
    Should I install a shim ! If then how to measure it ?? Any other option ??
    Thank you

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад

      The track that the door rides in will have to be vertical, so yes you will have to make some sort of shim to level out your frame. I would start by cutting a piece of wood to the width of the door frame and then sanding or planing down one side until you hit level. Then using screws and possibly construction adhesive secure the new bottom plate in place.

    • @christinastamey6713

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад

      +Dustin Draper it may work, but I would think you would be a pain to close. They start retracting as soon as you let go of them unless they're attached to something so getting them together it would be a hassle.

      It would also be easy to bend the track if you rolled a hand truck over it bringing in a refrigerator. He does a nice job explaining the installation but I don't like that lower track.

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад

      I haven't had an issue tripping on the lower track but I see your point about rolling a dolly over it. If I was bringing something large in like that I would come in through another door, but I realize that other people may not have that option. When we rolled a upright grand piano through the back door it had to go over the track for our slider. I put a 2x6 on either side so it rolled over the wood and didn't contact the track, which someone could do with this track as well if they didn't have any other option.

    Regarding building up the frame: so long as the height of your door is within the specification of the product then you don't need to build up the frame like this guy did. The boot body is retractable and can be adjusted for heights between 78.5 - 80.5 inches (199.39 - 204.47 cm). It took me a while to figure this out since it's not explicitly stated in the instructions and I was about the buy material to build up my door frame. I guess if you door is a lot shorter and outside the product height specifications then yes I guess you would need to build it up.

    Great video. That aluminum base bar that you did not install, is that in the case that the bottom of my door frame is slightly sloped and not flat like yours was? It's purpose is to provide a flat surface to screw the bottom track into?

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад +1

      It's purpose is to give a slope up to the track, we didn't use it because we didn't have the room to fit it in. Its an optional piece.

    • @BethCarmichael628
      @BethCarmichael628 7 лет назад

      The aluminum bar is for support to protect the bottom guard rail and for aesthetic purposes. There are shams included in the kit if you have a slanted threshold.

    I purchased one of these from Lowes. It did not operate smoothly from the get-go and after a few days it started coming out of its track. When closed it becomes transparent to people depending on the ambient lighting, so there is a risk of walking into the screen. The metal track on the bottom is also awkward if not dangerous. Not recommended.

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад

      If the door frame is too narrow for the track you may have to cut the track shorter. I would recommend using a metal cutting blade on a hack saw and using a guide to keep the cut straight.

    HI, I'm wondering how your door is doing these days? I just saw another video with a guy who installed the same door and he was saying the door is not all that great because the screen gets caught when it retracts to quickly. Is this so?

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  7 лет назад

      It's still working well. The re-tractor has a dampener in it so it doesn't slam open. If you release it and let it open on it's own it works great, if you try to push it open you can push it faster than the re-tractor and that can cause it to bunch up.

    • @trm1361

      It took a while for the impatient people in my house to listen to me when I told them to just open it and let go. After having it bunch up on them a few times they realized it opens itself slowly and without bunching up if you just let go of it once started. No slamming open like they expected.

    Wow look at all that space taken away, if you have only this one door and move out furniture or a refrigerator you have to disassemble that whole doorway. Otherwise cool screen. Good tutorial help.

      You make a good point, I have the option of going through the back sliding door on my house, but if this was the only way to get things in and out it's something to take into consideration.

    do you still have this? how did it hold up over time?

    • @DoItYourselfDad
      @DoItYourselfDad  4 года назад +1

      Still have it, it's held up well. The only problems I've had with it is the retractor slowed down due to dust getting into the roller, hosing it out fixed it. The other is the magnet closure sometimes pops open if it's extremely windy.

    Just a FYI....When having to move large furniture(Oversized sofa) or appliances(side by side Fridge) thru this door...the screen door will have to be removed.

    I made the mistake as using this as my ONLY guide for installing the door since the directions in the kit were clear as mud. Had a lot of left over pieces. Not sure hat they are for since the directions from the company were stupid. A little more detail for us DIY challenged would be great.

      ftball1713 You can't get pissed at the guy that made the video. Pretty sure he is not affiliated with the manufacturer in any way. If the instructions were not clear why would you not contact the company that made it ? Usually in the instructions they will give you a 1-800 number to contact for any further information. Never have I read in an instruction booklet,,,, for further information please find a video on RUclips and go by their directions.

      Correct, not associated with the company at all. The company that makes the door has it's own video, I made this one with the few tricks that I found that their video didn't include.... like the washers to straighten the track in an uneven frame.

    Basically, these are 'permanent' installations and expensive for just a screen door.

      If you can't get them in at all try using a pair of plyers to open up the clip a tiny (very tiny bit). Then once everything is is up you can tap them closed again using the flat blade of a screw driver and a hammer (gently).
