Thank you! You clearly defined and showed the jamb and the casing and showed them up close. Then you showed how to measure, again with nice close ups and you announced the measurement while you showed where it lands on the tape. That gave me confidence as to exactly where you were measuring. All the other internet videos show from far away and don't tell the numbers, so you never know what exactly their measuring. Great job!
Thank you sir for taking the time to show us very clearly how to measure for a screen door..I'm in the process of installing one for the front and back door..thank you so much!!
Thanks for the thorough explanation. I watched another video where, essentially, he just took a level, a couple of little wooden blocks, to support the door, and before you knew it, it was "up and running," so to speak. It took about half the time of your video, but I'm sure he made a lot of mistakes. But hey, it worked. Some people can do stuff like this in their sleep 💤😴
Thank for your help, I have a question, I am going to add a storm door but there is metal thing attached to end of jamb and casing. I have to remove it before measurement. Can you help me that what that thing is called and how to remove it?
My house is 90 yrs old. I have the old style metal storm door with the double glass, both replaceable with screens. The casing is 29.5" but that's with the door installed of course. I wonder if I take the aluminum casing off the frame if it will be 30". So, a door that is listed as 30".. is that with the casing or without the casing?
I appreciate your attention to detail and taking your time explaining on this video. I would would have a video like this 30 seconds and probably of missed some important details. I do have a question: Why do you go with the larger measurement on the height? I normally go with the smaller measurement.
So yes and no, in screen manufacturing you should always document 3 things. 1. Lockheight you want ( so as to not interfere of pre existing hardware or to replace screen already there in same holes) 2. Not any difference in HWS ( Height, width and square) 3. Build out or stops required.
The casing of my front door is about 1/2" will that be enought to install security door? I saw another video where he said casing needs to be a minimum of 1'? House was built in 2005 in clovis ca
I don't want to install a screen door, I just want to replace one that's broken. So can I just measure the door? If so, what are the chances that I'll find the exact measurements at the store?
Yes you can measure just the door. The store will carry What is called a door blank. It will need to be trimmed to fit most of the time. I make custom screen doors so this video gives my costumers instruction of the proper way to measure. I send them down a door that is a close fit needing little trimming.
The noun form of broad is breadth, the noun form of long is length, and the noun form of wide is width. Because of this, some people follow the pattern and say heighth, with a th at the end of the word high. That is not standard English. The correct form is height.

so, most standard screen doors that you can buy at Lowe's or Home Depot are 30, 32, 34 or 36. Is he saying you'd have to order a custom door? As in his example here, could he buy a 34 inch wide door and make it fit, or what?
Those standard size doors are not absolute sizes, they "usually" have tolerances that are +/- 1/2" so a door advertised as a 32" door will fit a 31.5" width and up to a 32.5" width. Download the installation manual first, before you buy and make sure that is what the manual itself states.
I make Doors to fit openings with minimal but necessary trimming, This video also tells a person how to write down on a paper they can carry to the store to find a appropriate blank.
lol did you seriously measure 3 spots...so if youre off by 1 inch what are you goona do? go to lowes and look for one thats has the option for ppls homes with door jams thats off by 1 inch??
Dirty sales trick he will tell the customer that he has to order a custom door which will cost more money. But just order the standard 36 in door an make that fit just fine. He's a douchebag and a typical salesman

why is the door width 3/16 smaller - need explanation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it for the hinges? Is it 3/16 smaller than the smallest measurement? 32/31.75/32 Then you did the math on the bigger number. Why? I plan to make the screen door myself so these details are important. Thanks
I suppose to allow the door to shut without the corner hitting the frame. I saw another video that said to set the saw at a 3-4 degree angle on the latch side to allow the door to close without hitting.
"Height" please!-- there is no "th" @ end but an "ht". The consonant sound produced by "th" is as pronounced here....improperly since the spelling is rather an "ht" suffix which is tten just a regular "t" sound. Grammar is major for me so correct please. Your content is great and I've saved it.

So you would order a 36 x80? Screen door?
how to put door frame in an opening that is 80 1/4 if your door is 80 and 5/16? Just pound it in?
The best explanation. Thank you
Thank you so much… you’re the best..more power to you and god bless❤

You will have to trim it.

Thank you for the very clear information...
Great video. very helpful.
Shouldn't you use the longest distance instead of the shortest? I always measure in centimeters and then convert it. I am not good with the fractions.
Glad donny realized that big clipboard would be a nuisance. Helpful tho!
Is it 35 and 12-16th wide not what you wrote at end of video

You may be correct, but is it necessary to post that? That has nothing to do with the point of this video.
Matthew Oakes - It’s a teaching moment. Nothing else implied.

Good luck 👍
Thank you so very much
Something happened when you measured the bottom, I noticed you weren't the same hopefully you're alright.
this video could easily be trimmed by 6 full minutes
THANK YOU!
Donny, why do you subtract 3/16 from the 15/16? (Sorry I suffered a TBI, I can't think right sometimes).
probably for the hinges
Donny, I am curious to know the answer to this question as well.
To allow for the door to swing. You're making a door, not boarding up the opening.
Ditto! if you're going to make a video, give us the reasoning behind making it 35 3/16. My measurements are 32/31.75/32 Do I make the door 31.75" wide then?
He gave the reason at 5:10. Because it allows a slightly off kilter doorframe to fit the door.
I have a sidelight so the casing doesnt have a jamb how do i go about this
Treat the side light as a casing, If I could post a picture here it would be great done it many times.

Yeah... Most of the time, you can rip qual amounts off. However you will not obtain the same width of board all around.
Yes. You round down and then fill in the gap with moulding.
Those standard size doors are not absolute sizes, they "usually" have tolerances that are +/- 1/2" so a door advertised as a 32" door will fit a 31.5" width and up to a 32.5" width. Download the installation manual first, before you buy and make sure that is what the manual itself states.

If I had to buy I would buy bigger then fit & trim. doing otherwise would restrict the opening.
are you using cm or inches?
Inches

Door needs to be able to swing open. For this it needs clearance.
3/16 will be enough space for the thickness of the screen door to clear the casing on each side.
I suppose to allow the door to shut without the corner hitting the frame.
I saw another video that said to set the saw at a 3-4 degree angle on the latch side to allow the door to close without hitting.
forgot to check for square
The blank cant be made unsquare. Thats why the tolerence for trimming.
