OMG. I have done so many storm door installation on my houses over the years. retired now in Florida and do not need a storm door. LOL Nice job. Looks like you have quite a bit of work to do. It will be interesting to follow you on your journey. I will be reliving my days fixing up a 1978 home when we lived up north
OMG…..You were spot on! Tell me you work for Anderson Co. Tell me! Your pace, your explanation of, rational, etc was perfect! I can’t express enough this is probably one of the best explanation videos I’ve heard. Honest to be, I don’t even read the directions. I played the video to its entirety. Then I played the video in chunks and mirrored the video. I now know why it’s 40 mins long. Funny….on top of the box it says easy installation. That means 1 or 2 things. It means you’re either screwed or royally screwed. I say screw that…..Follow his video, go slow, and knock her out. Oh, by the way I had a 20 yr old Anderson Storm door that I took down that I put up myself. Wow what a difference from today’s Anderson 400 series. From a Honda to a nice Lincoln! Good job Anderson. I love it and……it was installed perfectly! Good job on the video! Thanks!
"I forgot my small chisel...shhh" hahahaha I like this guy, he's a natural on camera. Not fake and cheesy at all, he's like a real person not some fake RUclips actor.
Great job and video ! Thanks 👍🏾 If anyone uses a wheelchair or Walkers, or unsteady in walking, etc., install the Pneumatic Arm or Door Closer at the top to avoid issues and injuries.
Thank you for the outtakes. That exasperated sigh is how I sound when I am trying to do projects around the house. Sometimes there is swearing involved as well.
Great video brother. It was a real life saver for me since the instructions that came with the door is quite useless. And you are a stud muffin to do the door by yourself. I had a second person helping me and it was still a tough process to get the door fixed.
Thank you for this. I made so many mistakes. And then I ended up with spare parts. And I had to see your video to make sure it worked. And it definitely did.
Thanks for posting this video. I found it very helpful. Anderson should put a QR code of this video on the box and/or in the instructions. In fact, you should be paid by them for providing such good advice. This could help reduce the number of negative reviews...
I put a Larson Platinum full glass w/screen in my place a couple months ago, we really like it a lot. It has a double locking latch and it is a quality storm screen door.
Use spade bit for handles. Make sure it’s the type with spurs on the paddle part of bit. The skin on these doors is thin aluminum and the spurs cut right through. Larson doors supply a spade bit with their doors for this purpose.
Ok , I am thinking I could assist but leave the installation to the professionals. We are redoing a home and it’s been frustrating and fun at the same time . But I would not change the experience for anything. The results like your work are all worth it!
The piston goes low on the door because it has a locking function that you tap that button with your foot to keep the door from slamming shut in case youre bringing in groceries for example😊
Watching your outtakes let's me know how it would go for me. If those things happen to you when you obviously know what you are doing and have experience, it would be 100 x worse for me if I actually tried this on my own. The storm door on the cellar, which is the entrance we use all the time, is completely messed up. It's not even a normal size-- 29 1/2 x 66. I just noticed two screws missing on the hinge side. I"m hoping for an easy fix, but probably not. The door has become uneven and I have to lift and pull/slam it to shut it. The neighbors have stopped running to the window to see what the noise is. LOL not kidding. I know if I started it would never end. It would be one thing after the other, the door jamb, the threshold, who knows what else, and I would be in over my head. 😭
That was quite a big project! Very well done. 👍🏻👏🏻 Quick question -- the outer handle looked upside down. Is that how it was supposed to look? Just wondering. 🤔
That bottom orange piece was working as intended. It supposed to hold the door a bit high. Once you have the door squared and screwed in you remove it. The to fill the gap at the bottom you loosen the screws holding the bottom piece (the one the sweep goes into) and adjust it down to fill the gap as you like. Then tighten the screws to fix it in place.
I understand you can lower the sweep after but both the hinge and latch rail would have a gap at the bottom. As I said in the video, follow the instructions as you want but I wanted those tight to the threshold. 😀👍
Update your light bulb outside the door .Those spiral bulbs are known to blow out . They can spray flames from the base of the bulbs . Swap to the LED style . I prefer the daylight bulbs Cleaner light in my opinion .
I installed the exact same door on my home years back. You didn’t mess up when drilling the holes, the template is off. Ran into the exact same problem when drilling. Called customer service. They knowingly ship that model with universal instructions to cover a number of similar storm door models, yet the template for this particular one doesn’t line up exactly where it should. Long story short, their customer service sucks and unless you’re handy, installing this model can be a nightmare for inexperienced homeowners.
Wow that is interesting. I wonder how much it would cost them to send out specific instructions for each door. 🤔 thank you for sharing that info! I feel a little better 🤣
@@TheFixerHomeRepair It's not astronomically expensive to set individual templates and installation instructions, so I don't know why companies don't do that.
This absolutely is more detailed for the average home owner and can try your patience for sure I think I would rather design a submarine than put this door in.You could install 2 pre-hung doors to one of these doors no thank you
And I thought it was only us amuther rookies who couldnt balance a screw on the tip. Thanks for showing us that you pros suffer the same pain 😅 Great video though - Thanks
Great video! Last Summer we installed a new Thermatru front door with sidelights and such. We also added a Larson storm door which was ridiculously essy to install. While Im sure it cost more than the 400 kit door. It was literally a 15 minute install, if that. Nice work!
The next step up Anderson doors from this one feature a quick install setup. The frame is prebuilt and fully attached so you just put it in the opening and screw it in. You have to be careful though as those only come in a left or right version and not universal like this model.
I installed the same exact door with a friend who is mechanically skilled, let me tell you what a blessing your video was. We definitely needed it . Some ideas needed in the video about the sliding glass. Is there any way to address that. Thank you 38:25
This is a fantastic demo. Question, if you are replacing the old door with a new one, wont a lot of holes for hinges etc be in place and install go smoother.? I dont you had to add a shim, but in my case i have an old anderson storm door which i want to replace with a new one and was hoping i could get a replacement model.
The home I just bought is missing the storm door but you can tell there used to be one. I seriously don't know what the pervious owner did with this place.
I'm gonna bring this up: door handle orientation. You installed your handles with the arc up instead of down (like the old one). Not usre if there is a right way or not, but ergonomically, it seemed better to have the arc down. I have door handles in this shape on my interior doors and got into an argument over this orientation...I lost.
I have the full glass model of this door and mine shuts way to fast. Like it slows down as it gets close and soft closes but you have to jump inside real quick or it will smack you. No adjustments I've made on it solve this issue.
You need to adjust the door closer. There should be an adjustment screw that will let you control the speed with which it shuts. Don't go too far or it wont have enough speed/force to lock the latch.
I have a door similar to that with the screen in the door. How do u replace the screen? Mine came apart at the top and the glass will not stay up. Had to screw the glass section up because it kept falling down. Hope u understand that explanation better than me.
So my front door trim is this weird foam/plastic like stuff. Could I just use longer screws on the front side to get them through and grab the wood framing behind it?
What about the lower glass? It was almost out of the door when I got it( series 400) I can’t seem to drop it in from the above the mid point and slide it down.. way too tight. How do I get the lower glass into the tracks and slide it down with out breaking it? The upper glass with the attached screen works great. Lower glass is stuck.
What is the purpose of the storm door anyway? A lot of things seem mad evil in us. Using shims installing a regular door or window when there is ajufix. 1000% easier. Nice clip as always
Keeps snow, rain, dead leaves, and such from blowing or piling up against the actual door, reducing the chance of leaks or damage to the door or its trim. And in warmer months, you can put a screen in place of the glass, open the inner door, and get a nice breeze :)
@@redwitch12 This particular door has the screen integrated into the top section of glass. The top section slides down and the screen replaces it. So when you have the glass up there is no visible screen to see/get damaged. And yes the main reason for these extra doors is to protect the main door during storm. Most of Europe doesn't get the the type of winds some parts of the US do that has driving sideways rain at 200KM/h or more.

Keeps the rain/snow from hammering the door and potentially rotting it out prematurely. Also allows you to open the entry door and let the screen door bring in some air on nice days.
Quoted here is from customer who gave 1 star review on Home Depot website:"🚨DO NOT buy this door! Andersen DOES NOT stand behind their product!🤬 This door is rarely used and disintegrated from the inside out. ...." Best to read reviews first before purchase of this door. Reviewers said the particle board inside the door falls apart in 2 years!
Hey! I would say probably the best thing about them is they stop snow from piling up in the doorway and keep water out to prevent rot and damage of the actual entry door. Those are my best guesses anyway haha. Thanks for checking it out!
The main benefit is to protect the main door from storms. There are parts of the US that have severe winds (200KM/h or more) that can easily drive rain around any sealed door. These add extra protection from that. Also the upper glass in this one slides down and the hole is replaced by an integrated mesh screen. So you can get ventilation going through it but keep bugs out.
Another thing along with weather protection and fresh air is allowing to open the door to speak with someone outside but not letting the dog run out! Our dog wants to greet everyone who comes to the door. Also my wife is a somewhat nervous type, especially when home alone, so if a stranger comes to the door the storm door still provides one more layer between her and someone outside.

Man, am I glad I watched this, it is WAY more involved than I thought. All doable stuff, but way more time consuming than anticipated.
