    What most don't realize is that 18k gold is too soft for a watch and would scratch in no time. The magic is in the metallurgical mix that results in an alloy harder than gold, yet retains its gold luster and blemish-less properties. Well done Omega.

    Lol why are people mad about it not being solid gold? Omega isn't selling it for 50 grand like Rolex. Wtf? Omega is the one of the best bang for buck luxury watches right now. Rolex is just tradition and good bracelets.

      Only stupid manufacturers will try “solid gold” (24 karats). It’s too soft to retain it’s design in everyday use. It might not even survive packaging.
      24 karat gold pendants are often encased in a harder 18 carat gold jacket.
      22 karats is the most amount of gold they use in jewelry, but even that is not durable.
      18 Karats is the most common alloy, as it retains a good “gold” color, but tough enough from being bashed around.
      There are 14 karat gold jewelries but the color aren’t vivid.

    How do the 3 Omega 18K gold alloys-Sedna™ gold, Moonshine™ gold & Canopus Gold™-compare in hardness, thermal conductivity and density?

      It would be hard to tell if they are proprietary alloys. Metallurgy is as much of an art as it is science. You can't know for sure in theory how alloy will behave. Information either has to come from Omega themselves, or somebody doing actual testing at home which could destroy the watch. I see no reason why would Omega be releasing any specific stats on these alloys, since customers don't really care what it is on a hardness scale in terms of number. Or how conductive it is. It's harder than gold, and that's what it matters for business.
      I wouldn't mind knowing more myself. But unless you're willing to do physical testing yourself I'm afraid you'll be left guessing with no answer.

      “Instead of real 18k gold”? The video just specifically stated that they use 18k gold.
      Maybe you meant “real” as pure gold?
      That’s 24k, and it too soft to be used as jewelry.

    • @jcass5814
      @jcass5814 5 лет назад +2

      Usually 18k gold is created with nickel and silver to give it strength and luster. 24k is too soft for jewelry use. The mixture of Copper is used for rose color and has better hypoallergenic features, the Palladium is used to strengthen it. Palladiums properties also allow the alloy to not waste off when scratches or polishing occurs.
