I love how Omega was the only Swiss watch manufacturer who sort of bothered to give the Daniels Escapement a try. Now it's their biggest selling point and the main reason I own one. Yet they still don't have the courage to mention the name George Daniels and pay respect where respect is due.

I guess they fear their whole brand becoming a shadow underneath the huge watchmaker’s name. I don’t blame them for it though, as I learnt many times how hard the co-axial escapement is actually very hard to reproduce (which is a big con brought as an argument VS lever escapements, even Daniels himself has failed more often than he succeeded when he tried to replicate it), nevermind it being on a huge industrial scale, but they have paid a dear amount for the right to use and the technique!
Unfortunately 99.99% of your average consumers do not care about ‘technical innovations’ in an already “primitive”timekeeping mechanism - which is why Rolex is top.

I am 37 and I love my Aquaterra with 8500 co-axial movement. I has been on the battle field for 5 years and it keeps a great accuracy 1+ per day. In addition, Daniel´s art work is such breathtaking and if you use an eye lupe you can see certain co-axial components. Moreover the beauty of 8500 movement, my watch has not run on service and it looks it can wait other 4 years. I also have on my young collection an Speedy black dial and my recent Datejust, but I must confess my Aquaterra has one advantage than others, it is all wearing style that make it easy to wear on business, casual or traveling. Simply a happy watch lover, Thanks a lot Mr. Daniels and Omega, great work...

    • @ColdThermodynamics

Joe, as watchmakers we do our work for passion. When George developed this escapement it was not in search of fame. He was trying to improve the mechanical watch movement to the best of his ability. Those truly interested in watchmaking know exactly who George Daniels was and what he was responsible for. I don't think he would have wanted it any other way. Any watchmaker who does his work for any other reason than passion for the trade does not deserve the title watchmaker. Our goal is to turn our passion into practice and then offer the result to the world. There is no need to worry. George very clearly lives on through his apprentice Roger Smith. Watchmakers live on through what they leave behind. Most do not know who is responsible for the minute repeater either. The important thing for us watchmakers is that it is still in effect today and improving. We try our best and give our best. This is a trade of passion, not fame. Don't be outraged. The only thing George wanted was the implementation of this escapement to further the improvement of the mechanical watch. I think he would be very happy with how things turned out in the end. 🙂

Dr Daniels was the first person in recent history to make every component of a watch, from scratch and by hand and dedicated some 60 years to the art. His “co-axial escapement” invention of 1974 - designed to make a watch’s mechanism run more precisely - was regarded by experts as one of the most significant horological developments in 250 years. It was even taken up by Swiss watchmaking giant Omega in 1999.

I think anyone that buys this type of watch will know this that Daniels invented the coaxial.
The ad never said that Omega invented the co-axial.
When do you ever see products advertising the inventor of the item or giving them any credit? Do any Apple products ever mention the inventor in their ads? Mercedes sell some diesel cars but never mention Rudolf Diesel.
Omega put a lot of money and work into bringing this technology to the masses and should be justifiably proud of that.
Daniels sold the technology to Omega. He understood he could have kept it to himself but was humble enough to see a bigger calling.

The Bulova Accutron first came to market in 1960. The Accutron index wheel is 2.4 mm in diameter and .040 mm thick with 320 teeth along the edge of the wheel. Each tooth on the index wheel is .010 mm high and each tooth is .020 mm wide(yes 10 nanometers and 20 nanometers). The typical hair on your head is .070 mm and the finest of hair is .020 mm an eyesight differentiation ends at .040 mm for one with excellent eyesight. The index and pawl jewels that are used to regulate the index wheel are .18 mm square by .060 mm thick(unreal), yes a ruby jewel the thickness of a human hair. In one year, the Accutron index wheel revolves 38 million times(WOW) or 72 times a minute(320 teeth on index wheel times 72 revolutions a minute is an unbelievable feat for the index and pawl jewels and their nanometer size makes it even more astounding). The Accutron is regulated by a tuning fork that vibrates 360 times second(unreal)(tuning forks of the Accutron movements have virtually zero positional error). The two coils that are used to resonate the tuning fork are made up of .015 mm wire spun 8100 times around a cylinder each(super unreal), if this wire was strung out it would reach around 90 meters long. The coil wire has a tensile strength of about 2 grams(imagine the precision spinning this wire onto a tube 8,100 times without breaking or distorting the wire).
A thirty year Accutron means that over 2.8 E+11 teeth have have moved under the pawl jewel.
Accutron was advertised to a two second a day plus or minus variation(some hobbyists claim much better accuracy with tuning)
Plenty of Accutrons still out there and running strong that are over 50 years old.
The Accutron was theoretically proposed by Swiss engineer Max Hetzel which he built a few prototypes. Hetzel moved to the USA and joined Bulova engineer William O. Bennett and a host of other engineers in New York City in the development of the caliber 214.
To this day no one really knows how the Accutron index wheel was produced nor the index pallet jewels.

To the Omega marketing department: You seem determined NOT to acknowledge the role of George Daniels as inventor of the co-axial escapement. Rather than coming close to taking credit for something that wasn't invented in-house, why not tell the Daniels story as part of your marketing? It is an amazing story about an amazing man; a story about a single-minded determination that resulted in something extraordinary; a story which I thought would have fitted very well with the Omega brand and image.

Rodolfo, to criticise the co-axial movement because Rolex saw no improvement is to completely miss the point of the design. The co-axial isn't inherently more accurate, especially in a brand new movement, the genius was to improve accuracy over the life time of the watch by reducing friction in the escapement and remove the need for lubrication that affects accuracy over the long term and in extreme weather conditions. As these watches are designed to last for decades this is the crucial improvement that George Daniels invented.

How often should this type of movement be serviced? Is it prone to any problems due to its more complex design? I like the look of the new Seamaster 300m coaxial but is the movement reliable?

I love Omegas but is very unfair not to name the real inventor, George Daniels. It was not Omega that invented it. Rolex refused this co-axial escapement when Daniels offered to them because they did not experienced any improvement. Gracias.

Many Omega watches are valuable. Not so much the quartz watches but the watches with mechanical movements like the speedmaster might end up being five to $10,000 depending on the model and the age. I would go to Google look up the serial numbers on the back case or maybe if the names on there just look the name up and go to eBay and see if you can find that model from that year... That should give you a good idea of what they're selling for. there's also an Omega forum that I run across now and again when I'm searching for something watch related on the internet. one thing you're going to want to do is avoid asking for valuations of any of those watches on a forum or really anywhere other than from a watchmaker or watchsmith local to you. This is just considered bad form and you don't want to do it. I'm sorry about the bad punctuation and whatnot. I'm writing this on the phone with a broken screen. Llok

The co-axial escapement was developed by George Daniels to reduce friction in the escapement. Reducing friction leads to a longer life for the watch.

Peter. Since 1999 George has been gently removed from Omega marketing and if you look at this presentation you would be forgiven if you thought Omega invented the co-axial.The presentation opens with 'The Simple Truth' - surely disingenuous in the extreme? To encompass 'The Complete Truth' and include 'Invented by George Daniels' - would take 1.2 seconds of the 108 second video. That George did not seek fame is neither her or there. In general, the great inventors and innovators tend not to be hard nosed businessmen and are frequently taken advantage of by the big boys. Would you not agree George Daniels is at least on par with Harrison and arguably the greatest horologist of all time. In different circumstances, the co-axial would now be the Daniels - just as the vacuum cleaner is the Hoover (or now, perhaps, the Dyson)

The coaxial escapement is not inherently more or less accurate than the more common Swiss lever escapement, but it is far more efficient, thus it require far less maintenance, and diminishes wear and tear on all the other elements of the movement. Its operating costs are less, and it maintains its accuracy for far longer.

    • @jamesdevoe5945
      @jamesdevoe5945 2 года назад

The escapement on a Spring Drive movement is another solution to the same problem; it is an elegant approach, but it is not purely mechanical. I guess it depends on how you feel about the Q word.

@@ras.4913 For me the question is, GS Snowflake vs Omega speedmaster 38. The answer has always been, I would like both, but I am not ready to pull the trigger on either. The dilemma has now intensified; Rumors are that Roger W. Smith, George Daniels' friend/neighbour/colaborator/succesor may produce an affordable (i.e., under $ 100K) version of his improved co-axial escapement watch. I guess that would make it a trilemma?
