Strengths - How best to use them

  • What makes us unique and unforgettable can come at a cost. I get up around five am most mornings to attend writing groups in the US. Some may say I'm dedicated. Others may say I'm crazy. I say I'm tenacious in achieving my goal of becoming a writer.
    How can I help myself?
    Tenacity is a strength, but it can negatively impact my physical and mental health when it falls into obsession. Self-awareness, sound systems, and habits help me notice and manage when the shadows creep in.
    In another class I teach, I encourage the participants to understand their strengths and limitations. To let those we work with know what these are. To do this, we first need to be able to articulate them ourselves.
    Strengths and limitations are neither positive nor negative. They are part of who we are, and it’s really about knowing how and when they help us. When they don’t help us, we need to manage them. I've written several essays addressing some of my more ‘negative’ traits and how they can be used for positive action.
    Amazing things happen when we are who we are, and we can link our strengths with our passions.
    I love learning new things. I love investigating concepts and the impact they have on us. I can apply this learning in my work life and my passion for writing. This is part of what makes me who I am.
