Alright, enough of you have posted comments now saying that "RUclips is social media", so I thought I'd give my take on that.
I don't consider RUclips a social media platform. I don't treat it as one. Nor do I ever state that YOU have to use RUclips in your marketing.
I don't view YT as social media, because most people don't come here to socialize or see what their friends are up to. They come here to be entertained or educated. It's a content platform and a search engine.
Not to split hairs about what is and isn't social media, but I'm not even sure if real "social media" exists anymore. Nowadays, everything's an algorithm-run content platform. But some platforms are better, some worse, for marketing purposes.
Bad platforms hide their algorithm, take away creator control and access to the audience they've earned, make them jump through hoops to get their content shown, force them into a hamster wheel, and pay them little to none of the revenue generated from their work.
Better platforms help their creators succeed, pay them, and reward quality work.
In my opinion, RUclips - although not without flaws - is one of the better content platforms. Because it's primarily a search engine, not a social media. Content here has a long lifespan. You get rewarded for building a body of work overtime, and you even get paid.
The point of this video is that there isn't any one platform or tactic that you HAVE to use. You can totally pick and choose. And if you enjoy Instagram or TikTok and get great results there - go ahead and use them. No need to be a purist. Every platform has pros and cons, including RUclips.
I'm not trying to say that you can somehow market your business without getting in front of new audiences. You have to. But social media are not the only (or even the best) way to reach new people. You don't even have to "create content" if you don't want to. I highlight plenty of other strategies in the video, including doing PR.
I hope this clarifies things. 😊

Totally agree, Louise. At the end of the day it comes down to authenticity and intention, genuinely serving your audience, and the importance of both is my personal takeaway from your video.

I want to add my personal testimony to this philosophy. I have been a freelance creative for 11 years. At first as a photographer, then a director, and finally a small production company with my partner. In that time frame, I have experienced year-to-year growth. This year is shaping up to break another annual revenue record as we've already closed multiple six figures and it's only June. I do have social media, but among my peers, I have always been the one neglecting it. Maintaining a relatively small following count and using it for direct messaging communication. What's crazy is I've always felt crazy for neglecting our social media even though what we are doing has clearly been working for us. And it's exactly as you prescribe, focusing on genuine relationships with actual buyers of your work. Thank you for this video.

Rarely do I comment on any YT video, and God knows I watch(ed) (way too) many. I ditched all my social media accounts two years ago, stopped watching mainstream news, freeing up the energy and focus to engage in activities and projects that make me want to jump out of bed in the morning. As a writer ,though, I still have allowed myself to get lured into the trap that I'd need any (or all) of these channels to share what I think may benefit others. Your video comes as a timely reminder that I can apply the same principles I apply to my personal life, to my work. Which, and life is not without a sense of irony, is the core of the message I'd like my work to put "out there" - to define "success" on your own terms, whichever they might be, focused on your personal preferred outcomes, and rooted in your unique, innate and natural abilities. Thank you :)

Just a suggestion for you from one small business owner to another, you don't need social media but from my own personal perspective A site like cara can be used not for business purposes but feedback purposes I use it for constructive criticism to see where I fall flat in my art when I'm stuck on a piece. I use it as a tool as opposed to a business platform so to speak since everyone speaks art there.
Not saying you need to, just something to keep in the back of your mind since it's been helpful for me.

I own a social media marketing agency here in Zurich, Switzerland. We create short form content for some of the biggest brands in Switzerland (which is a very small country). I‘m fortunate to have 15 wonderful employees.
I believe you hit on an interesting idea.
I also think you‘re right in terms of:
Quality over quantity and focus on your work first.
However, RUclips also works with an algorithm. Your video was suggested to me. IG Reels and TT work the same. If I‘m into sensational content, I will receive these. If I‘m into more calm, relaxed, no face explainer videos, I will get these too.
What I‘m trying to say is: yes, you‘re right. Focus on your work first, create long form content (blogs, podcasts, public speaking, youtube videos). If you have a good set, use Social to leverage these things (snippets from your pod, public speaking and so on). Those things will also find your audience.

I honestly thought I was doomed to be… well nothing tbh. This really calmed me down. Like, I could cry! Thank for you this video, honestly thank you!

Thank you so much for this new perspective! I am a Pilates instructor and used social media for a little while and very quickly realized that it is not for me. Pilates is very niche and what you write there gets lost even if you share good quality content. I love Calm marketing approach and will try to implement this in my business.

This video couldn't have come at a better time! I have only used one social (any more than one would have overwhelmed me)... but, I deleted that app from my phone yesterday. The net negative was outweighing the net positive (for me personally). I kept convincing myself to stay with it, telling myself that sharing my creative work with friends and family and ultimately trying to grow a community where I could share art and writing would be worth it and that I probably couldn't do it without that kind of platform. But, I couldn't ignore its effect on my energy, mental well-being, and ultimately my time. I miss what once existed -- a refreshing platform that, for me, was a space of calm and inspiration... a place where I had the opportunity to share, view, and appreciate what I and other people around the world found beautiful and inspiring, but that has given way to what is described in your video: a space that is loud, shallow, and distracting. I feel a renewed sense of hope and optimism to know that many creators here also want to create and share in a space that is calm and authentic.

I'm so glad someone put into words, what I've been feeling for a while now. It feels like a lot of people droppped their initial goals, because they were told what they need is "to go viral", while in many cases it is not true at all. I would much rather find my own community that sticks with me, than get a millions likes from people, who don't actually care about what I do. Thank you so much for this video 💞🌿

Thank you for a video that states the truth clearly.
We have found ourselves in a strange position in this modern world when creativity is being stifled by the tools that are supposed to promote that creativity. Social Media is just pressure and aggressive competition. The simple truth of something like Instagram is that nobody on there cares about your art. It's just a panic measure to mimic TikTok, it is not a way to get your work out there to an audience.

Hi Louise! I just wanted to take the time to say that your art marketing content has been such a breath of fresh air to me. Your channel is the only business advice for creatives that I've found that takes into account the idea that we have lives beyond just time in the studio and looks past the hustle culture to point to something sustainable and worthwhile. I love making paintings and drawings but have always disliked the idea of marketing myself. Thank you for opening my eyes to the idea of being able to slowly and authentically grow an audience. I so appreciate you!

Wonderful video! You've echoed what I've been saying to my wife in marketing our hair salon. I deleted all my social media accounts accept for RUclips, and LinkedIn for now. I have a web design and digital marketing background and our best leads have always come from SEO/SEM so the people who are looking for what we offer can find us. Our data shows that these leads are by far a higher quality than anything social media provides.

I had problems with sales my whole life. Your exercise to visualise who you want to sell to changed my while world view. I feel like I want to sell now! Cause I imagined the people (a couple) in my head that would understand the depts of my work. And therefore I saw my work giving meaning to others. Instead of before seeing a crowd of normal ”boring” people buying my work which just felt so damn wierd, without knowing why I even defined buyers like that in the first place. It made so much sense to me! Thank you! ❤

I'm a full-time commission artist for over 3 years now. Navigating a lot of doubt on my passion-purpose relationship, which has been affecting my mental health greatly (on top of a very complicated background as is).
These years, I've been bombarded with hustle and grind culture content, and it has done nothing but guilt trip me passively every time I needed a break. In the pits of burnout and exhaustion, these videos only made me feel like I was never doing enough and therefore, I wasn't enough.
I love your approach to business, and you're inspiring me to use my art and my (very chaotic) healing journey to reach to an audience that might need that kind of conversation.
Thank you again for the value you're delivering!
    Keep it up

Such a good workshop, Louise! I love the highway metaphor - SO true. This is all so old-school - the way commerce has worked since ancient times! Thanks for your efforts. The more people embrace this calm approach, the more aware the whole culture will become - especially artists. And everyone needs that right now.

I currently work with design and social media for a company, and I’ve just been diagnosed with burnout… I am rethinking everything about my life, and trying to visualize a path where i can pursue art and other creative activities I love, as a way to build a life I actually enjoy. I was very desperate specially because of all the AI stuff that’s happening right now, but you reminded me so much of how humanity and authentic matters. Thank you so much, you calmed my heart a little ❤

This is such a lovely and fresh approach to a world that seems upside down and inside out. I have started Instagram and TikTok for the purpose of a ‘portfolio’ and because some people supposedly get clients through posting their art. In reality I haven’t seen this work at all…and the pressure of both platforms to post daily, if not multiple times a day…😮😵‍💫😬…is simply a recipe for burnout.
For now my focus is RUclips whilst trying to figure out how to market locally, as I have no clue really how to market anything, it is not a skill that comes to me naturally. In the meantime I just want to enjoy painting, not because I feel this pressure that I ‘have to’ create for the algorithm, but simply because I’m passionate about what I do.

The analogy of standing on a busy street yelling along with thousands of others is so perfect. I’ve been so burnt out of Social Media. It was taking a huge toll on my mental health so I cut wayyy back both personally and professionally. However, lately I’ve had the fear that my business will never grow if I’m not constantly posting.
This is so reassuring. I have actually grown more in the last year in my business, but have posted social media content less.
This is because I stopped focusing on just posting and started thinking, “how can I help the people I want to work with”
Word of mouth is still a really valuable tool for any business. 🎉
