Replacing rear transmission mount to cure vibration on ford focus.
This will work on Chrysler PT Cruiser also. Same design.
Excellent oil Ron Excellent...Always love my teachers and only lately you see that they are being recognize as they should long long time ago...Should be the highest payin position ever...Be bless and keep up the good work
Thanks for posting this video. I replaced the passenger motor mount on my 2011 Transit Connect, and the reduction in vibration is excellent! I'll replace the other two when the weather warms up some.
Ron, thank you for such a great detailed video. I recently lost my Father and am now driving his Ford Focus. Thanks to your video, I think I got the issue figured out with his car. I really appreciate it Sir, more than words...
Your welcome.
More people need to make good quality tutorials like this
Merci Ron pour ce vidéo From french Canadien. Thank You Ron for your knowledge.
Well done video. I'm certain this is where the vibration is coming from in my daughter's Focus, so next time she's home I'll plan to check and replace this mount.
one of the best videos on this job I have seen on you tube
Excellent video Ron. Well explained and demonstrated. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you
Great video Ron . Very , very informative. Thanks on sharing your knowledge.
Killer vid, you should be very proud of your teaching ability. Thank you.
Thanks Ron!!.great video and instructions helped me out a lot
superb video with lots of detail and well explained as far as what to look for..... There actually are 3 mounts in total that control the movement of the engine/transmission... the one not mentioned in the video is the Dogbone mount...it controls the rocking forward and back motion of the engine while the left and right mounts shown here support the engine itself....ive done this repair Many times on ford focus and I Still learned a few new things from this...One thing I will add is that the mounts can not only affect vibration but also have a huge impact on engine Noise under acceleration....In other words, it can often seem that ones exhaust is bad or leaking with noise, drone, and roar coming from the front of vehicle ,when in truth it can be these mounts transmitting the engine harshness under acceleration...Ive swapped out mounts and found afterwards a Huge difference in engine smoothness and Quietness ,refinement from what you would swear was the exhaust...another tip, for the passenger fluid filled mount, if u buy these aftermarket, pop the cap B4 installing and add a bead of silicone then replace cap and let dry...this keeps cap on and fluid in, as these have a tendency of popping the cap, even when new and then going bad quick...the dogbone mount can have a big effect on harshness felt from the tranny shifting and also affects again percieved drivetrain noise in cabin..
excellent video!!! I have a 2003 Ford Focus ZTW with a 2.0 L DOHC.. and your video of the engine compartment looks Identical to mine.. Thank you for Great Video... You make it seem Easy.. and your Narration is so Clear and Thorough!!.... You just got another SUBSCRIBE!! :D ..
Thank you! Great job and considerably easier than I imagined
Thank you for sharing your skills... I could use that for my DIY... God bless.
Ron, great video, very thorough, thank you !
Great video, Loved it when you sucked the weight off the floor jack.
Good video. Clear explanations. My 2004 Ford Focus with 2.3 engine is completely different.
Thanks for this simple repair, just bought a 2002 zx2 and this is the problem, not timing belt a dealership told the owner lmao original owner parked it since 2004
Very helpful great detail very helpful explication
Thank you very much for the detail on the mount, I have got vibrations on my 1.8 tdci, many thanks
The 1.8 TDCi also has a mount underneath the gearbox
Great and detailed help for us driveway mechanics. Thank you!
I just replaced my passenger mount removed 98% of vibration. I did get the OEM part - recommended 👌I'm replacing the upper Trans. Mount oem on Friday
Great job Ron. Thanks much
Keep up the good work really good video
Well spoken ✅you make it clear
I just subscribed
Thank you from France !
Thanks Ron, good clear informative video. Just a couple of observations. UK models have the crank case vent hose connected to the airbox and have a small square foam block in the inner rear corner of the airbox molding. Your airbox here has the place for the foam but no foam and I didn't catch you mentioning removal and reconnection of the crankcase breather hose. Did I miss something or are they not fitted on US spec engines?
thank you for sharing Ron !!!!
Good video. Thanks man!
Very good Photography and commentary. Well done. Even I can Understand without being a mechanic.
I'm definitely going to look into this for my idle vibration problems. is this the same location and method for the 2.3L Duratec engines?
These engines are very solid made !
Good stuff. I have to do both of them on wife's 2010 focus.
Great video!! 💪🏽
Ron u are the Man ..
had the same problem ...thank !
Brilliant, so clear. Thanks.
Thank you!You. Are Awesome !!!!
outstanding man - thanks for the great info !!
Comprehensive. Thanks
hey ron great video. just wondering why do u only feel the vibration at idle and not threw the rpm range
Thank you your the man
Nice and easy, good video!!
Excellent video and demonstration with great detail, one of the best I’ve watched. Thank you!
Great video. Thank you
Excellent Video!
Thank you Ron!
Thirty people disliked this? What possible reason would anyone have to discount the knowledge this man just shared with painstaking attention to detail?
Thats a great question!
Ron Williams cool! Thanks for the reply.. i wouldn't have known what to look for without your help..I checked my mount, as I have vibration as well.. the mount is clear on the right side.. but the left side is resting on the rubber. Rubber isn't blossomed all the way out but it seems to be on it's way to failure. It is about 3/4 inch of rubber between the metals on the left side. Like a solid piece, melted together it seems. Should I go ahead and replace it??
If the mount is allowing one side of the mount to contact the other (even if its rubber touching) then change it.
@Ron Williams my mounts look like they have a little wear on them. I get more of a shake than a strong vibration felt at idle and it doesn't let up if I put it in neutral/park...it is also intermittent...could an intermittent SHAKE felt at idle in gear and out if gear be a bad mount?
Thanks Ron
Just bought an 05 focus zx3. First thing I noticed when looking at it. Felt vibration. Super easy fix! Very inexpensive if attempting to do yourself. Took more time to pull battery and battery box out than to pull and install new mount. Did all 3 mounts. 2 on top and one under the car. Smooth as butter.
It's a great little job to do ...wish I did it sooner
be careful. some people like to adjust the idle to compensate for this when the problem first approaches.
I have an '05 zx3 also. It makes a clunking sound sometimes when I shift, usually from 2nd to 3rd. Also when at idle my side mirrors vibrate like crazy. I'm going to be replacing the mounts soon. Hopefully will fix the issue.
3 mounts too....Just bought a focus 02. 2L dohc for my 18year old son. Engine is moving up and down. Ugh. Steering wheel vibrates up and down like bat shit crazy.. somewhat relieved to know this to be an easy fix. And hopefully no other damages. Tfs!
Great video
Great video but quick question by replacing all 4 mounts will it take pressure off the frame and lift it up and stop my vehicle from rough idle
Awesome video!!
Great video thanks!
Appreciate your informative video, looks like RockAuto will be getting another order.
BTW does solid vs hydraulic mounts do any better?
+0-Zone not sure. I install oem mounts. They are just rubber
Thanks for the video should do one on diagnosing 2nd gear grind on a 5 speed manual 06 focus haha but great video
We have a 2004, Ford Focus ZX5, 2 lit. Zetec engine, with the very same problem. There is no discernable movement with the motor, which caused me to wonder if the engine mounts could be at fault.
Parabéns ótimo vídeo
Good video thanks
Great video!!!!
Can u plz tell me about the goose neck that holds the radiator hose cuz my car keep over heating Ford Focus 2006
Sorry if its a late reply, but is the problem worse when the motor hasnt heated yet? My ford focus vibrates on idle, and he takes a bit more time than it should to shift, and vibrates during the shifting too (automatic transmission)
great video! thanks....
Thanks for this video, but i have one question: Have i not at first to pick up the + pol from Batterie, because not, the computer have to program new? Greetings from North Germany. Tom
man your video makes me dizzy..but nice informative video
My trans mount is not that bad and I don't feel any vibration at idle but it shakes like crazy on the driver's side it I use the full throttle at second gear, specially on a hill.
Just cheked the CV axles and they look fine but I saw that somene already worked o. the inner joint. I'm affraid that it was positioned in a different way.
Is there a specific touque that those bolts need to be at on the three engine mounts ? and if so are you able to tell me them +Ron Williams
FT mate
Good job
I have a 2001 ford focus se dohc manual transmission I changed the steering knuckle with new bearings and hub, the transmission mount which all of these things are on the driver side and my driver side mirror still vibrates what is going on ???
After market Arrow mounts do not last, Gone thru 3 on passenger side and only one for trans mount. Torque mount was replaced with an Arrow mount only lasted 2 years. Use FORD mounts, will cost twice as much but well worth it!
My car vibrates a bit at idle and high speed but I like it lol keeps me awake. I’ll have to change them soon
Vibrations at high speed are because of unbalanced wheels
Mine had this vibration issue and replacing the mounts made it smooth and no vibrations anymore.
I know he said there are 2 mounts holding up the engine and transmission, but there are actually 3 mounts on a manual car. Im assuming there are 3 on an automatic car also.. The third one is a wishbone shaped one visible under the center of the car towards the rear of the motor/trans.
Very informative. Thank you. Suggestion- get a camera person so you can work with both hands.
+Jeffry Blackmon thanks for the suggestion. I would love to unfortunately I'm an owner operator I run this entire shop repair and service write by myself. My goal was just simply to share the 31 years experience that I have with the do-it-yourselfers hopefully everybody understands that I don't have a camera production crew to help me out. LOL
Can you do this if the car is sitting on the ground instead of on jack stands?
what is name of the top half that of transmission you mention on video.....
Great video, Question is, don't know what year Focus this is but is it similar to 2004 Focus ZTW. I just ordered the mounts on black Fri. it calls for a set of 3 for 2004. Not sure about 3rd. mt. Thanks
The 3rd mount is the torque strut under car from transmission to firewall
Can a bad engine mount cause vibrations at idle in park too? Or would you only feel the vibrations when in gear? I have a vibration that I feel in park more than when it is in drive. No misfire codes. Also it doesn't happen every second. It comes and goes....
I am starting to think it could be a harmonic balancer that is starting to go....could a harmonic balancer cause more vibration in park vs when in gear due to the fact that the transmission torques down when it is put in gear? My main issue is vibrations felt in park/neutral and seems like it goes away completely when in gear....
Great video, though when I do these I'll usually jack the transmission up so that your 21mm bolt and nut aren't doing all of the work to lift the transmission. I've seen these bolts cross threaded from people barely starting them like you did and then just ugga dugga'n them on. Takes a 20 minute job and makes it into a 2 hour job.
I was looking at buying a used 2003 ford focus and it was vibrating bad at idle the dealer told he thought it could just need spark plugs could he be right
Thank you
thanks Ron. Succinct. Any thoughts on the third mount underneath?
+treborrelluf the mount underneath is just a torque strut. It does not support engine weight but rather keeps engine from twisting under accelerating and braking. It can easily be checked for broken visually.
What's your thoughts about getting the mounts from Amazon, I see a huge difference in price, are they any good? Thanks for the video by the way.
+ELIUD MARTINEZ as long they are selling name brand parts. I have in the past installed customers supplied parts amd they made vibrations worse
mi motor del focus 2002 2.0 16 valvulas zx3 tiene un golpeteo en la tapa de punterias
If feels like something is rubbing when I use brake, help
Sounds like you have warped rotors
I didn't go with genuine Ford motor company
I usually do ..but thought i try a amazon
Febi mount
Looked well made ..it has done the job
Hope it lasts ..easy job
Mine is 80 percent better
I think if I did the transmission mount too she would be like new but the top motor mount made her alot better
Well worth doing in my opinion
The OEM ones are just as bad, so aftermarket isn't a problem lol. They are all good for 35-50K but easy to replace. Common problem with focus and transit vans (same part)
FYI the 2002 ZTS Sedan with manual transmission has a 3rd mount on the bottom. After replacing all three, the drive feels so much better, solid/smooth control, before it was squirrely!
A mount supports a load. Again, The lower is a torque strut.
Informative ...
First generation Focus cars with Automatic transmission have 3 mounts. One fluid filled mount on the passenger side, the other mount is under the battery tray, and the last one is a small mount under the back side of the transmission on the driver side. If you change 1 you better change all of them.
The one under the the car is not a mount, it is not a load supporting device. It is a torque strut.
Ron did you put in a aftermarket trans mount ? I need to change mine out I have the same veh the wagon but with the 2.3 . i saw a oem mount on ebay for 50 dollars and a aftermarket for 15 dollars
After markets are usually trash. Oem ford better, nothing lasts forever though. Hanging an entire engine and transmission from just 2 mounts is why i say engineers should not be allowed to work unsupervised!
Mine doing shake at idle plus strong gas smell. 02 ford focus lx
💪🤣 ottimo lavoro
Hi, do the Ford Focus needs to be on car jacks or ramp to replace the motor mounts and transmission mounts?
+Joon kinloch you can be on either.
Is the 05 Focus the same?
Essentially this is a non-problem other than the annoyance of feeling the vibrations?
helpfull thanks
Nice thank you sir!! Now there's one problem I have is my Ford focus zts gets stuck at 2k rpm, what's the fix??.
I would have to run some tests to give out information on that problem. I would however first check for sticking throttle cable if it has one.
Ron Williams I'm going check right after work, thanks again. 👍😎
detailed and quick. thanks!
I think alot of the issues come from the engine design. The ZX2 escort, and focuses shared the same design. Even the next gen focuses all vibrate badly.
Exactly,my 1997 escort vibrated like crazy.
What about the other mount that was already changed does that need support when removed
No support needed for opisit mount as long as its tight
