    I just picked up my car from the mechanic an hour ago. I had the top motor mount replaced. All I can say is WOW! It feels like I'm driving a BRAND NEW CAR! It's night and day on the vibration. The idle vibration is 99% gone. Within 10 seconds of starting the car, I can barely tell the car is on. When stopped at a stop light, I can barely tell the car is on.The shifting of the transmission is so smooth. It's insane!

    I've done this before and replaced with Ford OEM mounts and they lasted about 110k miles and it's rattling like crazy now. Your are correct when you say everything rattles. I just purchased 3 new ones today from an online Ford dealer for 140$. I've read on the Focus forum the kits although cheap and do work don't last long. However, that could depend on the manufacture. It take me a little longer since I draw a line around the original mounts and torque to specs. Otherwise it's an easy job. Much easier than replacing the alternator or manifold intake with the flapper issues. That was a job but resolved the issue. The A/C is a PITA to replace as well. I keep it as a spare car. Just watched to remind myself on how to access everything again. Thanks for posting the video. Anyone interested in the part number and current prices, I have placed these below.
    5S4Z-6038-CB Motor Mount $79.86 1 $79.86
    5S4Z-6068-AA Rear Insulator $34.21 1 $34.21
    8S4Z-7M121-A Upper Trans Mount $27.64 1 $27.64

    I too was impressed with this video. Straight-forward and right on the money. Great fix! 2007 Focus no longer feels like it's gonna shake itself to death. The two upper mounts are in. The underside mount I'll do when I'm not tired. Mistakes happen when one works in a state of fatigue... Kudos to Pete's Garage. Muchas Gracias!!!!

    I bought an 06 Focus with 126,000 miles for my son and knew I would have to replace a motor mount after I test drove it. This video is giving me the confidence to give it a try on my own...for the top two anyway. I taught myself how to replace the blend door actuator and Jerry rigged it to bypass the set of doors that are seized shut to save paying over 600 dollars in repairs. Now my son has heat and air! I also replaced the hood myself and the whole license plate light housing. Thanks to great people like you posting helpful videos! This video is awesome!

    Just bought this same focus. It's definitely time for motor mounts in mine too. Cant believe how easy this looked. Thanks man. I'm not even a mechanic but I'm just gonna do the top two and let a shop do the bottom one and save big.

    • @jimdestefano5243
      @jimdestefano5243 4 года назад +2

      Bottom one is no more difficult than top two. Just get some inexpensive ramps to drive your car onto. They will provide plenty of room to access the dog bone. Make sure you have a jack under the engine near the bracket so it doesn't rotate down onto you when the bolts are taken out.
      Fine tuning the jack position will also help to get the holes lined up for putting in the new part. Leave the dog bone hole closest to the engine for last to line up.
      After dog bone is installed loosen and reseat upper two mounting brackets to relieve any horizontal stress on them caused by the new dog bone. That stress can lead to premature failure of the other mounts.

  • @jimdestefano5243
    @jimdestefano5243 4 года назад +22

    A few points of advice.
    First, replace all three mounts, not one or two. The weak older mounts can shift strain to the good mounts leading to early failure. Also you need all three to have optimal interaction for vibration damping.
    Second, replace the dog bone first. As the new part may shift the engine horizontally, it's best to do it first for hole alignment and also ensure horizontal stress on other two mounts is eliminated. When reinstalling use jack height to get the holes to line up. Leave horizontal hole dog bone end closest to engine for last when getting holes lined up.
    When removing dog bone take out both bolts on the bone first. It will give you more room to take out the bracket bolts.
    Third, for the other two engine mounts, loosen all bolts then fine tune jack height position so mount is loose and can be easily removed. It will save you grief from having the engine shift and trying to get the holes to line up again.
    Fourth, getting that bolt off that holds the hydraulic mount to the bracket is really difficult due to the rubber mount that twists. I finally had to take it to a tire shop for removal with an impact wrench and holding it in a vise.
    Fifth, use SPK aftermarket mounts. They are a Japanese firm and you're more likely to get decent part than some Chinese headquartered company.
    Sixth, remove the plastic cap from the top of the hydraulic mount. Mine blew off from the pressure of the expanded rubber when the car hits a bump. I was lucky it didn't get caught up in the accessory belt and pulleys.

    • @skip741x3
      @skip741x3 4 года назад +1

      good points... the last one though i recommend popping cap when the mount is new and applying lots of silicone seal around it, then reseating it...let dry b4 driving ! the silicone seal keeps the cap on and the cap in turn keeps that rubber seal from exploding under pressure and spilling out the hydralic fluid....ive put the mount b4, and the caps popped off like u said in a day or 2 and the fluid seal burst as well.... sealing them as described, the fluid seal never breaks and the mounts hold up over time

    • @jimdestefano5243
      @jimdestefano5243 4 года назад

      No, replace the dog bone first. Otherwise, you'll be placing horizontal strain upon the other two mounts likely leading to early failure.

    Nice video. I have a 2010, and I'm sure its about the same. Haven't been much of a car "wrencher" myself in the past, but last weekend I did new front struts/spring assemblies and sway bar links. Wasn't difficult and I took my time, but thanks to *many* youtube videos, I had the confidence to do it. I saved at least $500 doing it myself compared to quotes I got from shops. My car is on its second right side mount (113k) and I suspect might be ready for another, as well as a left side mount. The torque mount was recently replaced by a shop. Still a little bit of vibration.

    Thanks for the video, definitely going to tackle this myself. I have an 09 focus and imagine that the parts are in similar spots (the motor mount is for sure). I'm worried about the Transmission mount (passenger side) as I live in the rust belt, so it may be a bugger to get lose. Mechanically its been a solid car, only doing basic maintenance. Only issue is with rust...now eating the sill plates on both sides. :-(

    I too just got a 2007 Focus. It had only 43,000. Crazy low. I feel only minor unsmoothness... I'm sure it will get worse, so I'm ready to install the 3 mounts when time comes. Thank you

    Just an FYI, if you leave the engine and transmission mounts loose while removing the torque mount you can get it out without removing the bracket by lifting the engine

      Seems like you have a great suggestion but I don't follow you. The engine and trans mounts you speak of.....is this just the motor mount he removed or other mounts? Then you say you can "get it out without removing the bracket" again, I want to understand what you mean. Is this the motor mount he removed or ?? Thanks!

    • @TheJuanSolid
      @TheJuanSolid 4 года назад +2

      @@deeman77777 Yes, they are referring to the passanger side (motor/engine) mount and driver side (transmission) mount. If both are loose you can raise the engine enough to move the 'bracket' out of the way instead of removing it.

    nice video, I have a ford Focus 2014, and my car is shaking a lot, but if you go to the dealer they charge you almost 500 bucks, and it's been a challenge to find the right mounts to replace it, I glad that I found your video, even though this is a 2007 focus, but the passenger side continue the same. nice tip about removing the battery and put it back, the only thing negative was at the end when you were replacing the lower mount, I couldn't see how you removed because of the angle of the camera.

    • @PetesGarageandperformance
      @PetesGarageandperformance  4 года назад +1

      Sorry about the camera angle. Sometimes it’s hard to get a good angle and still work on the car when you’re doing it on the ground with jack stands.

    I just replaced the passenger side motor mount, with the aid of a friend and girlfriend. The aid was really more folks to hang out with, we probably spent more time talking than working. I'd argue this was simpler than even changing the brakes on a car. So happy I did it myself.

    • @PetesGarageandperformance
      @PetesGarageandperformance  4 года назад

      Oh yeah I agree. I would definitely rather do one of these motor mounts than brakes.

    • @toddzilla

      @@PetesGarageandperformance Thanks a ton for the video. Like yours, the vibration is almost gone. I can't tell if what's left is "normal" or the other two mounts, but they're easy as hell to replace, so I'm going to do them anyway. I even took the battery out to check how simple the transmission mount was to get too, so I feel pretty confident in swapping it out when it gets here.

    • @PetesGarageandperformance
      @PetesGarageandperformance  4 года назад

      @@toddzilla Yes, my experience is that most of the vibration is from the passenger side mount and just a little bit from the others.
