Rather than oil, try using ATF (automatic transmission fluid) in conjunction with the steel wool on light surface rust. It has detergents in it that cleanse the metal while the wool breaks the rust loose. Cory McClenathan's A-Fuel car was kept in the shop next to ours and the mechanics cleaned the entire tube frame with steel wool and ATF before each race. Very effective.

Thanks for this comparison. I always use a motorized wire brush and have had people tell me it’s not as effective. Using this video as evidence!
Best to use gloves and safety glasses with high speed tools and maybe even thick clothes. Ever wonder where those tiny pieces of wire, etc, go as the wheels wear away.
Agree with most of what you said but many safety people are on the fence about wearing gloves when using tools with rotating parts e.g. angle grinders, drill motors, wood lathes, etc. I am on the fence and wear gloves only occasionally (not because I am worried about safety but I can never find them).
Fantastic video, fast and helpful.
It may fall under chemicals but I use mineral spirits and synthetic steel wool to remove dust. It evaporates and doesn’t leave your table saw top oily which will cause problems on your wood. Just dip the scotchbrite pad in a cup of mineral spirits and start scrubbing. Then use a rag or paper towel to wipe off the slurry of rust and mineral spirits. Then you can apply your preferred protection.

Until you wire wheel your thumb or get one of the bristles up into your eye, nose, or mouth... Having my thumb chewed up by a wire wheel and been hit by quite a few wires on my arms, stomach, and a few to the face while wearing PPE I still love them and can't live without them. Just please be careful since steel bristles flying around at 20,000RPM are can be really harmfull to you.

I like the steel wool and 3 -in-1 oil. I do use an orbital sander with various grits for flat surfaces or a wire wheel for curved surfaces. Good job on the vid. 👍👍

I actually like derusting metals using these methods first then if I really need to then I use a little chemical but that's only for spots that tools can't reach, I also use vinegar at times

Steel wool and WD40 works well on Axe heads that develop surface rust after use. The drill press wire wheel is great for the heavy stuff.

Question. I restore vintage push bikes and have been using the wire cup wheel on my angle grinder, does a good enough job but: it bites on small items and can be a bit dangerous. So I bought a bench grinder and installed the 6" wire wheel. Both these approaches work ok however they both shed wires and I find them in all sorts of places I'd rather not get them. So is there a modern alternative to the wire wheel? I see some funky sea-weedy looking grinder wheels that the panel guys use on cars, these would not shed wire shards but are they any good vs wire wheels? Thanks

Hey Plasmo, sorry for the delayed response. The wire wheels shed wires when they are run faster than they are designed to run. Unless you have a variable speed grinder (could be accomplished with a plug in dimmer switch but may be bad for your motor) this is a reality of wire wheels. I’ve seen derusting done with the seaweed doo dads and it seems to work well, I can’t say it won’t damage your metal, best bet is to pick one up and give it a shot on something you don’t care about first. It was being done on an axe head and it took off the rust and paint very well. Best of luck, be sure to wear a face shield when you wire wheel if you continue to do so.

Kickass. And I didn’t mean safe like “unplug it first hurr durr” like what cleaners are appropriate with old varnish/laquer on the windings, how to replace brushes (or fab one because it’s so old), how to test for continuity (I think you need mega ohm capacity) all that kind of stuff.
Now it’s sounding like it will be a few videos because some of the techniques are going to be dependent on the age of the motor.
I would like to see that one too. I just cleaned one that was packed full of sawdust and didn't have a clue what I was doing!!

why is the sandblasting bare metal color different from the wire wheel if both options clear the rust properly?
Thanks for the vid! I guess if you really want a brand new look, it would be sandblasting. But, with a shovel, the wire wheel definitely does a great job. I found this vid because I wanted to de-rust the under belly of my lawnmower. It came back from tune-up but they pressure washed the bottom and the paint was crusting off - bare metal showed and its got that rust. I'm going to use a cup wheel and do the job and pop some primer and paint....or maybe raptor line it....this'll be fun! :o)

Easy ay to keep your saw table top rust free is a coating of mineral oil. Wiped on, easy peasy and lasts awhile.

I have been told any any type of wire brushing (manual or powered) actually creates a polished surface after the initial abrasive rust removal effect.
Polished metal surfaces are quite inadequate for proper adhesion of primer paints.
Therefore, an additional surface abrasion between wire brushing amd painting has been recommended to me.
Sand blasting creates a perfectly abraded surface, but is not always a viable method.
Would manual sanding with a sand paper be a good abrasive treatment after wirr brushing? Which grit of sand paper to use?
NlhadH actually, I recommend using etching primer, for instance Rustoleum Bare Metal Primer uses a mild acid to etch the surface after wire wheeling
Parts & Restoration That is a good idea. Self etching primer certainly solves this issue.
But if epoxy primer is used, then some sanding of the bare metal surface before its application would be required. Which grit of sand paper would be optimal?
This is correct. So to get it down to bare metal I use a polycarbide blade on an angle grinder. It does wonders.
What's the deal with that black coating on the metal? I notice that with some methods of rust removal I get a black finish like most of the shovel, and other times, with more aggressive methods, I get a shiny silver metal. Is one preferable to the other? What's that black coat made of?
For context, I'm a welding student trying to stay in form, practicing on rusty scrap metal while we're in pandemic isolation. I'm practicing stick, so I can handle a little contamination, but I'm also concerned with things like conductivity.

Hi. When it comes to using an angle grinder to remove rust, what rpm grinder would you recommend? I have a 12,000 rpm angle grinder and I have a hard time finding disks for them, and I feel like I would be better off with like a 7,000 rpm grinder. What is your experience with this? Thanks!

There's a guarantee you'll have sparks, yes, metal on metal.

In the steel wool/oil combo, the oil you used is generic "machine oil" or something specific? I must often de-rust a set of historical reenactment armored gloves because I live in an extremely humid place in Italy and I fear something more invasive would ruin them on the long run
Hello Frederico! I think using a thin machine oil will do just fine for your needs. One oil I use is called “3-IN-ONE” multi purpose oil. It works quite well. I also like firearms oil such as Remington Rem Oil or Ballistol spray oil. Also, Evaporust makes a great rust prevention spray called Rust-Block. Good luck brother, be sure to subscribe!

Federico Gavioli wd40 really is one of the worst metal surface protection sprays out there. You’d be better off using motor oil IMHO. It washes away quickly and does a poor job overall.

Hi i have deepest rust on chrome on a mobility walker how to remove it.
If it’s super deep, you’ll probably need to replace it. If not, try the techniques here. Also, you could try naval jelly or evaporust gel

Never used an angle grinder, but I bought one and a flat knotted wire wheel.
Is the knotted wire wheel the best wheel for the job or would a cupped wire wheel or different wheel be better?

I’m a big fan of using a cupped wire wheel for flat surface work. They make knotted cup wheels and knotted flat wheels as well as fine cupped and flat wheels. The knotted wheels are more aggressive. Best bet is get get a variety and play around to figure out what you like!
