    You have converted me to your hard wax. It keeps things moving like fresh rag-in-a-can for a long time and seems to be better rust prevention for me in my humid garage.
    It is kind of funny that 1/2 my woodworking hobby is working on metal. Restoration, rust removal, sharpening, etc. Didn’t expect that going in but don’t mind it at all. Equally fidgety and rewarding.

    Brillo in the UK are known for a coarse steel wool and detergent pad. The generic term for nylon cleaners over here is Scotchbrite (made by 3M) and is the stuff that everything pretends to be - the grey pad is a great finish polisher.

    Only difference for me is that instead of sandpaper, I use the sandflex bricks. Sorta like a pencil eraser that's filled through and through with grit, so as it wears out, new, unclogged grit is exposed. Just took a bunch of rust off a lathe yesterday, worked quite well. Not to mention that the green medium grit one is a pretty damn good match for the factory grit on Lie Nielsen's planes, so there won't be an obvious shiny or rough patch after a bit of cleanup

    If it is a little to deeply pitted, try restore. I get it at Home Depot. Get a spray bottle too. Use dry sanding,clean off with dry rag. Spray with restore. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Spray again scrub with a green or red scouring pad. Wipe clean. Use light oil wipe clean. Done.

    PB blaster is my favorite preventive. I keep a rag in a can and just spray some on it occasionally as I use it. I try to make a habit of wiping my tools down after I've finished using them on a project and before they go back on the tool wall. A couple of times a year I will wax everything that's bare metal in my shop with some paste wax. No rust problems here and I'm in the either baking or boiling TN.

I also save desiccate packs from packaging and toss them into my tool drawers and boxes and have used Zerust products from Amazon. Although, oil and paste wax is used almost everytime I put a tool away just because I love them. ;-)

    An excellent video, James. I do something I've never seen other woodworkers use, Rem oil by Remington. I have a giant spray can that must be 10 years old or more. It's made as a rust prevention on blued steel used for gun barrels. It's even lighter than 3 in 1 and seems to last a very long time. Since I really don't hunt much anymore, my can lives on my workbench and it works great. I start out spraying down brand new tools when I use them the first time since I live in a very humid area and my tools are in the garage.

    How is your experience with those Narex Richter chisels goin'? I am considering building my own Paul Sellers work bench, complete with leg mortises, but I have zero chisels. Have been thinkin' 'bout getting real firmer chisels for the leg mortises, and Narex makes some neat ones. Whatcha think?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Месяц назад

      The Richter chisels are still my absolute favorite. The best bang for the buck and incredibly durable. All of the other lyrics chisels are made out of a different steel that aren't quite as good. And I really don't have a huge need for a firmer chisel. Especially when making big mortises you're usually going to use the auger bit to take out most of the material and then you can come in with a bench chisels and clean it up.

    I was always told as a kid learning that although wax is great and does protect your metals, you also never use a waxed tool on a surface that is to be glued? Never bothered testing it just did as I was told and accepted it though we have used wax on paper templates to prevent the glue up from sticking to it?... . Wondering your thoughts and/or experiences?

    • @WoodByWrightHowTo
      @WoodByWrightHowTo  Месяц назад +1

      That is one that makes common sense. But in practice and in function it doesn't make any difference at all. I use waxes all the time for lubrication between wood and tool and I've never had a problem with glue or finish.
