      And I don't want to hear the excuse of "WeLl ThE iMaC cOmEs wItH a KeYbOaRd AnD a MoUsE", because the Magic Mouse is very outdated and it sucks, most people probably already have a keyboard and mouse or can get a better one for cheaper, and with the Mac Mini, you can reuse the external monitor. My 1yr old owning M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14 (late 2021) base model is what I would consider a beast of a model compared to the windows laptops I’ve used most of my life prior to switching over to Apple.
    It is single handedly the most expensive piece of tech I’ve ever purchased but I’ve no regrets buying it. Everything I’ve done & asked the computer to do is watch movies, office work, read books, listen to music, play games, edit photos & it hasn’t ever broken a sweat nor struggled in anyway. I was debating between the model I now have & the M1 Air but went with MB Pro because of: better performance, super fast speeds of loading/downloading/uploading, doesn’t overheat, availability of ports & better camera/speakers. No regrets getting the M1 Pro MBP 14.
    It’s a beauty of a machine with beast capabilities of performance. Nothing I’ve ever used before computer wise compares to it & other than the Max & Ultra versions; I’m not sure if anything could compare and/or beat it. 0 regrets.

    Great comparison! I do want to emphasize that the non-Pro/Max M1/M2 chips are really powerful, equivalent to high-end Intel chips from the old 15/16" MacBook Pro. You absolutely can use them for heavy tasks. While the Pro/Max chips are indeed faster, the non-Pro/Max chips are going to be delightfully fast for most people. The memory bandwidth limitations/lack of GPU cores compared to the Pro/Max largely only affects things like 4K video rendering, which hit the CPU and GPU hard at the same time.

    After watching this video, I feel like I should have bought a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M1 Pro Processor, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of Storage. I bought the 16-inch with the base M1 Pro Processor, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of Storage. It’s a great laptop but don’t get me wrong but now approaching a year of owning this machine, I realize that I don’t need 1TB of Storage and have basically never gone over 512GB of space and the screen, while awesome is just too big for carrying the laptop around. I think next time I buy a MacBook, I’ll take Josh’s Advice of buying a base 14-inch MacBook Pro as I actually have a 22-inch Monitor in my house and I can always just plug my laptop into that instead of spending lots of money on a larger screen that I don’t need. The 14-inch from what I’ve seen allows a lot of content to be shown on screen. Thank you Josh for this MacBook Buying Guide. I’ll be sure to take your advice in the future. 😊

I mean, he did not only deal with the specifications but also the budget. Great guide Josh, especially about the refurbished market. A 15-inch MacBook Air with 16 GB of RAM, which is the minimum I would buy, is $1,269 on the Apple Refurbished Store. That is $30 less than the base model at its regular price and, to me, well worth it. Even the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air with 16GB of RAM is $1,099, the same price as the base model at its regular price. Apple's Refurbished Store products are practically new.

    hi Josh. I picked up a new 14 inch mbp in Space Black today. Overwelmed from a large purchase but happy nonetheless. i will go back to creating videos, which i left behind 10 years ago. My daughter had a M1 MB-Air and found herself running too many heavy duty programs like Adobe After Effects and Lightroom for school projects. I would rather spend a few hundred dollars more and get the superior speakers, best in class webcam, iconic Black (or near-black rather) not seen in a Macbook since the early 2000's. I will have such a great time with this machine; and if I can keep my 5 year old Acer and Lenovo machines going for this long, then there is some better value and power to be had with Mac Book Pro!

I will be retiring soon, and I want to buy a MBP just like this one because I have become so accustomed to the beautiful bright 16" display, I don't want to downgrade to a 14" display - even one with an M3 Pro CPU. My eyes aren't getting any better!
    I am currently looking at a late-2021 16" M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD on the B&H site for $1799, which is a $900 discount. There is also a 14" M3 Pro with 18GB RAM and a 512GB SSD for $1849, but as I said, I really don't want to downgrade to the smaller display even if it has the M3 Pro CPU.
    A MB Air doesn't suit me, because I also use 2 big external displays, so I need the MBP with its 3 USB-C ports and the HDMI port to drive them, and be able to have my 2TB external Samsung SSD plugged in as well. I think I'm going to buy the 16" M1 Pro machine, as it will suit my needs just fine, and will give me the much-nicer 16" display and a 1TB SSD to boot.

    I think the best guide to computers is:
    * Price : Performance : Productivity RATIO.
    Macbook Air M1 wins in terms of Price to Performance so long as Productivity is either basic tasks (Web, Office, Coding) ie what it can do/run works very well for the price paid. It should hold up realistically for years. Of course smaller screen and low RAM will limit some areas (no fan and 1.29Kg weight being good in other areas eg) but if that's not you, as above the 3 P's Ratio is the best guide to starting with "Paying For What You Use/Need" while keeping an eye to longevity and reliability and quality which is really where Apple often shines despite beefier prices in svelte chassis.
    Final nod to the future: M3 should be an exceptional chip (that's what they said about the previous chips... but this one is 3nm and likely Arm.v9?).
    Agree with Base Level Macbook being best for price category for value with discount.

    I think I'm going to buy the new 14" M3 Macbook Pro, base model but get the 16GB ram upgrade for increased longevity. It turns out to be $3000, so $300 for an extra 8GB of ram (crazy) but in terms of options it's still $500 cheaper then the M3 Pro with the same amount of storage and ram, just the upgraded pro chip which I don't need for my usage.
    So in terms of options the M3 just has all the new features I want including the upgraded screen. I could get a old M2 Pro or something but finding one in good condition for a cheaper price is hard in Australia plus it will be shorted a year on system upgrades when it gets older. My current 2015 13" is still good so I like to hold onto macs until they basically die rather then upgrade every few years like some do.
    I do think buying an older Macbook is still the best for some people in terms of bang for your buck but if you want something to last I see the M3 with the ram upgrade as the best buy and forget option for an everyday user who doesn't need the pro chips benefits.

      @BlownMacTruck 9 месяцев назад +1

      16GB of RAM is hardly a barrier. Storage? Sure, but it depends on what you’re working with (I doubt coding would matter at all in this regard).
      Secondly, who cares if it’s not the base model. It’s not like you can’t spec it out to match those requirements.
      I also doubt you do much coding because none of us have called ourselves “programmers” doing “programming” since the 80s.

      @@BlownMacTruck 16 gigs may not be a hard barrier right now, but look again in 2 years and it's gonna become one more and more. It's also just much less convenient today, run an IDE, a browser with a good amount of tabs open, some comms software and you'll be hitting that limit pretty fast depending on what you're working on. The problem is that buying the higher spec version of these non-upgradable laptops is a straight up scam, with them charging upwards of 5 times the cost the same chips would cost if bought seperately, even at consumer prices.

Especially after learning Apple throttled the bandwidth to 100GBPs, 150GBPs, 300GBPs, and 400GBPs. Super disappointing. I guess I'll wait for M4 Max. Maybe then they'll have something compelling. Right now the only tempting device is the M2 Max 16" with a heavy discount. But it's barely an upgrade from my current config.
    Also... 16GB of RAM should be the standard for base model laptops. 8GB on a laptop is cruel.

    Eh, especially for actual pro workloads like dev I think 16 gigs of ram are gonna feel cramped pretty quickly. I don't know if mac os x is magically better at memory management or compression than others, but they can't work past the required memory to do some things. I'm already hitting the limits of 24 frequently on my laptop and not going for less than 32 on the next one. Especially with the actual chips for RAM and storage being very affordable right now, apple charging out the ass for them is egregious. Why would you limit yourself to any less than a terabyte or two of storage when that's gonna feel cramped within a year? A fast 2 TB m.2 ssd is like 100 bucks.

      I said what you said in the video. Yes, you can absolutely do those tasks, but it is sub optimal. And even then, whether you can do those tasks depends on the size and complexity of your project. Enjoy your Air, if it works for you, that is great, and what matters. But for most professionals doing high-end performance work, it isn't ideal
