Even if you're not familiar with his name, you know Bob Power's work if you bought a good hip-hop record sometime between 1990 and the mid-2000s.
So sit back and prepare for some electric relaxation, as we let the master of mixing sharp snares and deep kicks break down the art of making timeless records.

From true-school classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders or The Low End Theory, through to defining the seminal sound of The Roots on four of their groundbreaking albums, or even helping out on dancefloor party jams like Dee-Lite's ”Groove Is In The Heart“, Bob Power's contribution to the history of urban beats is vast. But you might never notice it if you don't read the sleevenotes on the back of your well-worn records.

It's funny that he mentions that things in the studio tend to not be "effective" after midnite. I remember hearing that Dangelo and Bob Power were having "creative differences" and Russell Elevado was called in to finish some of the songs for the Brown Sugar album. He later mixed the all the rest of Dangelo's album's which are amazing but my point was Dangelo was a night owl. He'd wake up at 5PM and be up all nite. His hours were different and he worked mostly after midnite. He also liked to smoke his weed ; ) This may have been one of those differences.

When he gets to talking about politics and the politics and the division between political parties isnt only due to the hubris of one side of it. I kind of got the impression that he was suggesting that the left hasn't done ourselves any favors trying to convince the right that their beliefs are incorrect when the way they try and communicate that message we frequently can be condescending or preachy, and that the closest people off to hearing about your trying to tell them.

I love Bob's approach to requiring payment but take it one step further: no payment, no handing over of recorded assets. It's really quite simple --- only in audio would someone be expected to hand over the goods and MAYBE get paid later. Makes no sense. Cash on delivery of recorded assets. Simple. The only reason someone would have a problem with that is if they have no intention of paying you. Get it? Weed out the non-payers instantly with that one simple trick.

i think he just means that Dilla didn’t have a whole lotta elements to his beats. A lot of his beats were like 8-10 tracks max. Kick, Snare, hi-hat, chopped sample and bass. That’s a testament to how great he was. Able to make the best, most classic sounding shit with a couple ingredients. No overthinking.

I guess that Mr. Power doesn't like it that we can taste the fruit before committing into buying em. Aside, you can't compare a primal need with a secondary need... @RÉMON Peer to peer sharing isn't illegal in a lot of countries and as I mentioned, it's been shown by studies that it actually helps the music industry by allowing people with no financial means to listen to stuff and thus making them discover artists they would have otherwise never heard of. Also, it's not because you admit you did something that you regret it: there's no actual logic to that.

Nobody actually believes piracy helped the music business, and everyone who works in the music business saw their sales devastated overnight by Napster. Maybe listen to the people who actually lived through it.

Your comment is very ill informed. First of all, I'm not nobody and so is Roger Wallis. The "everyone" you are referring to are not the artist, producers and creators behind the music people listen to: they are the bureaucrats who have managed to get control over the product distribution of the art. I'd suggest watching the documentary "TPB AFK" to get a better idea of the true fight behind this polemic.

Seattle the most liberal city in the universe!?!?! Dude, you need to get out of the U.S., it is VERY conservative next to anywhere in Europe (and even other parts of the U.S.).

I like alot of things that he is saying but ".... recordcompanys make a lot of money, well start your own." is klassist and denying the fact that not everyone can start his own buisness depending on his resources.

Everyone can start a record label brother. Gotta work hard, team up with God and make shit happen. Not saying it's going to be the biggest record label, but we can currently be completely independent and make a living, like we couldn't before.
