    Show Notes:
[1:00] Jordan Peterson kicks off the conversation by asking why and how Matthew McConaughey wrote his book Greenlights.
[4:00] Matthew realized he needed to write the book himself without a ghostwriter as initially planned and dig back into his journals as a form of necessary reflection on the past.
[6:00] Matthew’s old journals revealed their common thread through all the stories, poems, and bumper stickers. That common thread was the creation of good things in life through mindset or action “Greenlights.”
[12:00] Jordan talks about his initial response after reading Matthew’s book and how his expectations were changed.
[14:00] Matthew talks about his solo trips when starting to create the structure of his book. Jordan comments that this was a book written by a celebrity that did not really focus on the traditional parts of being a celebrity (very family-focused and foundational). Matthew states, “When we were editing the book, I found that the more personal the stories became, the more relatable they seemed to become, to the human condition, and that was my hope.”
[18:00] Jordan and Matthew revisit the African trip, chasing dreams and having the same exact dream multiple times over the span of many years.
[24:00] What was the personal impact on Matthew during his trip to Africa where he got to strip away the identity we all know him for and exist as something else? Jordan comments that very often, people confuse their reputation with who they really are, and they start to act as a representation of their reputation instead of themselves; it’s an easy trap to fall into.
[22:00] Matthew discusses dealing with the pitfalls of fame. Matthew covers his changing relationship with his mother due to success.
[25:00] Jordan B. Peterson asks Matthew McConaughey about some of his acting work in True Detective and playing dark characters. “How do you play a dark role very well without letting the darkness invade you?”
[32:00] Matthew talks about the positive aspects of the sometimes tense relationship with his father and having a childhood that balanced love and hardship directed from the same people.
[37:00] Jordan and Matthew continue talking about going deeper into the psychology of a dark character like Rustin Cole on True Detective
[45:30] Matthew expanded on the short-term effects of initial fame.
[51:30] Matthew and Jordan discuss the long-term effects of fame.
[55:00] Jordan points out, “If flawed people were incapable of creativity, we would have no creativity.”
[1:03:00] How Matthew and Jordan first became friends.
[1:07:30] Matthew shares a comical review of his own book written as if Jordan was the one reviewing it.

Benzos may have the worst physical dependency effects, because they change the way the nervous system works. As far as I know, Mr. Jordan Peterson still has side effects almost a year clean of benzos. Also, to stop taking them he ended up needing to go to Russia and then an eastern European country which I can't remember the name of right now. That was because every clinic in both USA and Canada could NOT successfully get him off benzos. Money was no problem, just that the west did not have the knowledge. I have journals dating back a while. Lost track. The important thing is to move forward. I encourage people to look back and reflect on their life. To change themselves by adopting ideas that challenge them. Many will not because they don't want to change. They want to be the victim and blame others for their problems. Those people will always stay put but those who are willing to go through it will find a better solution to their problems. Journaling, reading books, that includes mein kampf and the communist manifesto, the gulag archipelago, etc. Yeah, these things must be taught so history is not repeated but I believe these bad intentions that were created are already here. The political parties with corporate leaders also want a utopia but only Jesus will instill that. Any government officials that claim they are for the people, are actually forcing us to become future slaves...interesting enough, we have slept too long and we are paying for it now.

Finally seeing this. Mccaughey does laugh in unexpected places sometimes but the Mephistopheles quote about deserved demise earned through basic existence amused me as well -taken on its own and not in the context of the moment in the play or story, anyway. Groucho was a pretty well-read guy, if Goethe was his source for: “I’d never belong to a club that would allow someone like me to become a member”. Which is kind of the same fatalistic circular argument but packed in a much lighter package.
Keep up the good work. I’m 62 and I want to be like you when I grow up. :)

I kept journals until 2007 from the age of 8 to 17 as it was mandatory in our home. Our house burned and they all burned with it. After that I was really upset because not only did my journals burn but so did all of my drawings and poems I wrote and every single little thing that I would write down on/in all sorts of things. My momma even let me write on the walls so long as it was purposeful, if you will. So I quit writing, no more journals, songs, poems, drawings. I completely gave up on my life. I feel like my life was better when I kept a journal so recently 2019 because “Covid” I couldn’t go anywhere, I started writing again and even created a board game with my 3 children that implemented journaling (currently still in development) I feel more alive when I journal. As far as Matthew goes, I love this guy! I’ve always liked him because he “feels like home” I could listen to him talk for ever. I feel like we have a connection, like a brother or father, a great friend. As an ex addict I'm really curious to hear the details of his struggle lately. It's a very personal thing so we may never know the "dirty details" of what happened but dealing with benzos is a very precarious situation. I was addicted to heroin and benzos and heroin was much harder to stop but benzos give some of the most dangerous withdrawals of any substance. The fact he went all the way to Russia (if I remember correctly) for treatment really concerns me and leaves HUGE questions.
Edit: I watched the interview of him describing treatment and to be honest he just sounds like a drug addict lol. I love him and his message but going to Russia to be given PROFOPOL for a week is pretty much cheating his way into sobriety. Even hearing him talk about I get the feeling that he's not completely over it yet. I didn't sleep for months, I was throwing up all the time and got extremely depressed and had every symptom he described on top of opiate withdrawal but it was a much needed learning experience in accountability. Everyone has there own journey but I think it's a mistake to be treated in that manner. It would have been soooooo much easier for me to get clean by having someone knock me out for a week and a half while I detoxed but then I wouldn't remember all the pain I went through to get clean. I hope he gets over this eventually but everything I see leads me to believe that he's still not in the clear yet.

I haven't even finished the episode yet. But the words that Matthew speaks about taking hold of the wheel in life and not letting yourself off the hook so easily have really impacted me. I'm at a point in my life where I have been ashamed by my actions and the results that they produce are so toxic and they are eating away at my relationship with my wife. I wasn't capable of understanding how I knew that God has forgiven me of my son's and yet I let myself of the hook so easily.
That was until Jordan pointed out that there is this higher standard; an ideal; that we are called to be and I knew that from the start but I couldn't connect the dots where I finally realized that all my actions, especially the ones I choose to ignore that negatively impact my life, really do impact me down the road.
So if you're reading this Jordan or Matthew. Thank you to the both of you for helping me come to a revelation in my life tonight. It turns out that I think this will help save my marriage from my own poor decisions tearing it to shreds.

    Brilliant.

    • @ApocDevTeam
      @ApocDevTeam 3 года назад +2

Optimism is bullshit, because it contradicts the laws of nature. The universe is always increasing in entropy, it is impossible for entropy to decrease in a closed system. The idea that something good is just around the corner is akin to religious belief, not based in scientific reality. Existence is merely a journey towards maximum entropy (thermodynamic equilibrium of the universe). Nothing in the universe will survive. Not stars, planets, or civilizations. Stars will eventually cease to form as Hydrogen gas clouds are depleted, black holes will eventually decay due to Hawking radiation, and even atoms themselves will break down as the universe gets closer and closer to maximum entropy, rendering all forms of intelligence impossible. The laws of thermodynamics dictate our fate. Oswald Spengler was right all along: optimism is cowardice. We are all doomed, and we've been able to prove it scientifically for decades. Optimism is a fantasy designed to give comfort to our primitive human minds to help us cope with the brutal reality of the universe in which we exist.

I did not even know who he was at the time until after he left and my boss told me. I then proceeded to look him up and watch all of his movies. Nice guy and very talented.

I am here after watching Steven Crowder's video which he had some valid points, what Matthew what I said during the press conference at the White House now I will say I will always respect and never doubt what comes out of Jordan Peterson's mouth or mind. I know that will never lead me wrong. And Matthew does amazing movies as an actor I've watched a lot of his videos of him personal interviews and he seems to be good all the way around but as I've seen lately some people need you're not pick a side but you honor the truth especially what America is and should stay but also as America learns to adapt like it always has because of how we've always embraced every culture but still making sure that they are assimilated to who we Are and what makes us great so that dream will always be everybody's dream that they have a chance to grasp. I like this interview pretty good still feel like need a little Steven crowder comedy and a little extra straight in your face truth from a person's like his perspective and theirs but where more Americans can rely on with some dependability is listening to Stephen Crowder also all three of these men are powerhouses that actually do talk from their heart more than they don't I'll take that as a win and listen God bless America and God bless all of you and God bless the people that love America too we are so just starting to truly be the America that will truly end up being stronger, better, and more solid to the great values to which we were built upon.

Watching this in 2023. A refreshingly honest and open discussion, very impressed with how articulate Matthew is. I'd enjoyed his film performances but known little about him. I would love to hear both men's thoughts in 2023 on the subject of the A list Hollywood stars who have become fathers in their late 70s/early 80s. Here in the UK, most people seem to think it is fine as the infants will be well provided for financially. I'm not sure it is healthy, given that the said actors already had plenty of children and grandchildren. People are often quite critical of late motherhood, the over 40s and even over 50s, but it is seen as acceptable for a man to become a father again late in life. Dr Peterson here was still recovering from his terrible health crisis, but now in 2023 he is looking radiant and strong, it is a joy to see. "Beyond Order" is one of the best books I have ever read and is already helping me to be a better person, it seems better than any psych meds to be honest !
