I got to spend a week learning from Bob in France as part of the Mix With The Masters program during the Summer of 2019. I cannot speak highly enough of the high caliber person Bob is professionally and personally. So giving with his time, knowledge, stories, and just so cool to break bread and hang out with. Even down to him at the spur of a creative moment, producing a track with my classmates and myself; with him producing AND playing bass on it. The best souvenir ever from that trip. So watching this brought a huge smile to my face. Always a consistent watcher of all your videos man. Keep em coming!
You’re asking this dude all the wrong questions I woulda asked more about his random knowledge of sound and vibrations he has and not what his favorite work is.
Bob Power is a walking example of a human being that understands the beauty of musical sonics. No matter how technology progresses, what “sounds good” will never really depend on the technology of the time. At the end of the day, it’s gonna be all about what the HUMAN creative construct dictates. To capture quality recordings of music from various sources, from live instrumentation to digital/sampling (even AI elements these days) SHOULD always lead to humanistic DOPENESS.
Proud of you for this interview. Bob Power is one of those that I have always wanted to hear more from and of. Since his hand was on soooo many of my favorite albums, I can only imagine how many stories that he has, and perspective that he can give. Buhloone Mindstate is mixed so well. It is by far one on my favorite albums sonically.
One of the best mixing engineers ever. Some of my favorite work from him is Meshell Ndegeocello's Comfort Woman. If you don't know that album, please check it out: it's a masterpiece.
wow...I didn't know he did that MeShell N'degeocello project! For those who dont know, she a dope poet, singer and one of the BADDEST female bass players on the planet, bar none!! I have every album mentioned in this podcast! I have to say Bob Power cracked me up in the Tribe documentary quoting Phife verse about Seamens Furniture...🤣🤣
It is not often you hear Meshell’s name mentioned, but when you do it is definitely coming from the greats. As is the case here! Peace Beyond Passion is a landmark album in my opinion, a must for bass players but also for music lovers in general. She is a super baddd mofo!! 💪 great interview man! Thank you
Great interview! You can quickly see why he was so popular and kept getting those incredible gigs, every answer he is humble and deflects praise onto the artist, or focuses on tiny technical details. Just a great, professional team player, exactly what legends like D'Angelo or Erykah Badu need. His students are lucky af. You've got similar energy! Went for yeah I still play bass to 'yeah I back up Nas whenever he needs me', the best bassists are just humble peeps who want to support their homies and make everyone look good ❤
Thanks Brando and Bob! First time ever electronically meeting Bob like this.. ah technology what a breeze. No but for real, thanks so much Brandon for all the work you have been doing man. Been following you for about a year now and I can say I’ve told friends about your channel and I can’t wait to see what the future brings ! Your content always gives me a piece of the pie I never knew I could have. God bless brother. 👨
Bob Power is beyond human. He is kinda angel or a saint. This guy have on mission on earth to spread pure love, in every kind of way is possible from him. I met him in studio in 1996 and all he said to me, as I was nobody ( I was th graphic designer of the record) just stays so clear in mind, and it will stays forever. The kind of person you cross the path and change yours forever. Thanks for the sharing of this. Peace love and Souuuuuulll Music ;)
Just an FYI for engineers out there. You can replicate the technique Bob Power is referring to here using parralel processing instead of duplicating each track & treating it separately
How did your love for Jazz Music inform the making of those albums, and was it a major component of your and QTip’s professional relationship considering he’s a Jazz enthusiast?
I've got a request - could you do an episode on Kenna? He's such an enigma, and from there you could jump down all kinds of Neptunes rabbit holes as additional episodes
One of the best engineers ever. The mixing on those tribe albums is absolutely insane
Bob Power you there?
"YEAH"? - The Chase ptII
