Same with many Android devices. Using an empty password will still use the empty field as a WPA2 key and leave the incompatible encryption enabled. For DS games you REALLY need a dedicated WEP-capable access point or an old computer with a WFC USB connector.

Using a cell phone as a hotspot will most likely lead to failure. Not only do most cell phone hotspots leave WPA2 enabled despite the key being empty, but the NAT (network address translation) setup on most mobile networks is often completely incompatible with games that use a peer-to-peer architecture.
If you're phone provider blocks hotspot unless you pay them more for hotspot You can use a you can use a USB c adapter(s) to plug a Ethernet cable to your phone so you're phone gets internet from a wired connection And then it should be able to create a open hotspot You can also set a limit of one to your hotspot if 1 device so only your ds is using it
i still dont know if its my DS fault or what, but i always set up a open access point on my router with no password just for this, and i can never compleate the first connection test, i try to connect to that access point with other devices and they work just fine, and its not just my copy of MKDS, y have two and both of them do the same thing...
